Several priests and disciples have come up to me with a most peculiar question: what scents I enjoy. Apparently, I am told by the Scholars, this has become a trend. As fads go, I suppose it is entirely harmless, so I shall add my own list:

Citrus and ginger, particularly when they mingle in fresh steam, with the bitter undercurrents of tea.

Hot, mulled wine.

The scent of the cold wind that races ahead of an autumn storm, heavy with rain and the promise of winter to come.

Freshly mown grass.

Sacred incense.

Fresh, ripe peaches, just cut.

Spiced apple cider, steaming hot.

There seems to be a great deal of discussion regarding scents. What is my favorite scent? Currently that of green paint. Does green paint smell different than that of other colors? I am uncertain but I will clarify just in case it is so.

More typically, I happen to enjoy the scent of outdoors after a good rain. That fresh, clean scent.

Then there is the scent when you are weary from a long day and game hen are roasting in the oven along with root vegetables. Perhaps now I am venturing into the realm of my favorite meal. There is an overlap, correct?

Another two weeks have passed me by. There is little to report: reconstruction on the old family estate here within the capital is moving along, and should be liveable before too much longer. I shall be more than pleased to get out of this inn. The accommodations aren't lacking, nor is its cuisine unsatisfactory, yet I am restless there all the same.

I met with one duke and one duchess. Aside from their respective holdings being wildly apart, the two could not be more different. I found the duchess to be a most serene woman. I imagine she will be as a rock to both her family and her fealty, something no doubt necessary for these tumultuous times. The duke, on the other hand...

Was a perfect delight.

If only the others with whom I scheduled meetings hadn't had to cancel. One after the other. I might have had more to write.

It seems there are a few favourite topics these days in the pages of the white-spines. I think one of marriage is better kept to another entry, though as for scents:

Somehow, the greatest scent to anyone is that person they hold dear, which sounds terribly odd and rather like animals but I am sure there is some truth in it. Laws of attraction, as it were, and scent has the greatest pull. I am sure many have written within the pages of the journals, and smiled knowingly to themselves, noting subtly or otherwise, the defining perfume of that person in their life.

It is just something else that makes them unique to us. Sometimes, it is the hardest perfume to describe.

How does one describe, in full, the clean and natural aroma of a man? Leather; the heat of the sun on his skin; the distant remnants of the lather from when he shaved that morning; the sheen of sweat from work not yet turned stale; or frustratingly the vague telling of a wet dog after he let the little beast in the ocean before it jumped all over him. Or just whatever it is that makes him, him.

On a less romantically philosophical point, I suppose, I like many of the more subtle perfumes for myself. Flowers tangled in spice, as an example.

And I am terribly partial to jasmine which is, above all others, my favourite.

Relationship Note on Magpie

I heard that Magpie hides all of his figures in his couches. If you want free figures go open them up like prize bags.

So I was browsing through some of the latest and greatest in the journals of the Arx populace and as usual it was fairly disappointing. Why can't people share more rumors about each other? All they're doing is talking about smells. What the fuck is that all about? It gave me an idea though. The next time I'm planning on a black reflection I'm going to eat a lot of beans first. Then I'm going to guzzle a lot of ale. I'll make sure it's a really long reflection so me and the scribe are trapped in the room for a long time.

Rumors, people! Juicy rumors!

Did you know that Calaudrin Estardes only has one ball?

Relationship Note on Emele

My beloved cousin has recently come from the Riven lands to Arx to serve the Whitehawks, and it does my heart very good to have her here. She is sweet and dreamy and dear - many things that I am not - and I've missed her terribly. Some days this city feels like it has become home to me, others I still count myself a stranger in it, but having my kin close makes the place feel more familiar.

*multiple sketches of different pieces of jewelr. With varying noes beside them*

I think my next goal will to make something for each noble household, as a gift. Though, I will have to start throwing money away on a variety of things. I waste the money on whatever since over all silver seems rather useless to me. I am good with just eating fish and baked vegetables.

On scents.. I don't know what would be be what I like. Not a fan of the forge smell. Not a fan of much for floral.. maybe roses. I'll leave such musings to those who like such things for thinking about. Probably Marquessa Ariel or Princess Fatima or something. Someone who knows about such things.

Red apples, cocoa, and daisy.

These aren't scents for a perfume or anything, merely things that make my mouth water. Metaphorically or otherwise.

There have been so many opinions written of late on the topic of marriage. Personally, it has historically been a rather touchy subject to me. I came to Arx to marry a man I'd never even seen or written to before. I saw him the first time as he stepped up to the altar of Limerance and signed the contract that had been negotiated for us. We spoke our vows without ever having had a conversation. It was... there were a lot of emotions for me at the time. I was, frankly, angry. Terrified. Terrified and angry sum it up nicely. But I did it, and it was not that there was a sword held to my neck. I did it because that is, sometimes, what is necessary. It is what be being born to a noble family requires.

Marriage is a tool, one of many, that are at hand to the nobility. My family needed something the Keatons could provide. The Keatons needed something I could give them. There are hundreds of families that depend on Wyrmguard and hundreds more that depend on the Keatons. Because their lives rely on our success, we are expected -- required -- to give up certain privileges that are afforded to people as a whole. Like marrying for love or letting personal feelings get in the way of diplomacy. In some ways, being born to the nobility strips us of our personal freedoms. It is a sacrifice on a daily basis. Your heart will always want what it wants, but how often do the goals and needs of your people align with your own personal happiness?

Now. All that being said, we are children of our gods and they... they are good. I was terrified as stated before. I had this large, silent man, a stranger who could be, potentially, anything or anyone, standing before me, signing his name to a document that made us family. Blessedly, Limerance was watching over the both of us. My husband is... the most honorable, wonderful man I have had the pleasure to know. He and I have been lucky enough to find ourselves fitting together into a steady, stable foundation upon which our house can grow.

Blessing to all the gods.

My perfumes, even when using inexpensive materials, are always of high quality. I find the term "cheap" perfume distasteful. They're affordable scents; soaps, hair tonics, lotions, after shaves, and more. When someone finds a scent that they adore and they can afford the more expensive materials of the scents they tend to buy them.

I worry not about what sells on my shop: people like quality, and you can have it even with the grade of perfumes made with more affordable materials.
