It is official. I can state from experience, that getting shot with an arrow is awful and I do not like it.

Relationship Note on Preston

I cannot speak on the grounds of Faith and religion, for I have not devoted myself to its study, nor have I sworn my life to them like Grandmaster Preston has. Yet something he wrote in his last entry made me consider the nature of questions, and I find I disagree on a minor point.

To deny the existence of the Gods would be foolish indeed when they are all around us, when we exist in Aion's Dream. Yet is to ask questions on their nature, on their being, subject to the same interdict? How can we understand Them better if we do not ask questions?

How can we understand the role of the King and our most ancient and venerated institutions if we do not ask?

None of us are born with innate knowledge. All must be learnt. To simply be told that this is Mangata is not enough to understand Her, to see Her in the waters of the sea and the winds of the storm. One must ask a thousand and one questions, as an adult if they were never asked as a child.

I suspect Grandmaster Preston did not refer in his entry to questioning as I framed it. Perhaps he instead meant the kind of questioning that serves not to dispell ignorance but instead serves to make a point, the questioning that is more weapon than any other tool. I cannot speak for the man, however, having never met him. Still, I believe the nuance must be made.

To question can be beneficial and indeed necessary, depending on the intent.

I was never really an avid jouster; my interest in it would be considered superficial by some, and they would be right. In practical terms, one isn't going to use a lance in combat for the purposes of unseating an enemy horseman. There is too much chaos, the movements too small, and it's rare anyone will be riding their horse in a straight line, let alone an opponent doing the same.

It is, however, something that some might say is expected of me, but they can say whatever they like. Traveling on the roads, I would say I am at best out of practice with a lance. I prefer using much shorter militant arms when I'm riding, and the close confines of a mounted combat typically require such.

The only reason I'm doing it today is because I appreciate House Laurent for their honey, especially with Lady Mabelle gifting me with some in the past.

One does hope Duke Cristoph appreciated it, because my back most certainly did not. My pride can stay on the ground where it fell.

We all wear some sort of mask. What kind is up to you. The question is, how often do you allow people to catch a glimpse of the real you? That person behind it. I'm slowly allowing small glimpses of myself to be seen. I suppose we'll see who can see the difference.

Is it terrible that sometimes I actually forget I'm married? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I am not sure. It feels not a whole lot different from when I wasn't married.

The call of the seas and the freedom they offer is all the more enticing when one has a caravel to sail upon. Sometimes I wonder why I linger in the capital at all.

Relationship Note on Preston

The simple truth is that at any time, there are more causes than people have silver, and so an event raises the topic and keeps it at the forefront of peoples' minds. The right event can even sweep people along with the spirit of the occasion, and convince them to part with more money than they would have otherwise.

Relationship Note on Mirk

Elder Mirk Halfshav has been exceptionally generous with his time as well as with offering insightful advice on some matters I've been unsure about lately. While our paths crossed here and there at events or the like for a year or more now, only recently have I gotten to appreciate his kindness as well as dry humor. I'm quite grateful for his assistance and willingness to help.

For Skald (after a chance meeting in a midnight alley)

I am crushed
by your weight,
behind me and inside me.

My fingers curl into fists
around rough bearskin and your breath
scalds the back of my neck
when you whisper:

I defeated Destiny,
my hands
trembling around
her slender neck,

and in my wisdom,
I granted the powerful
the freedom
to choose
who to whip

and the wretched
the freedom
to choose
how to weep.

I believe that Amari and I have had a small break through in the research we have been doing. I am very excited about this, and am looking forward to learning even more, now that we have made this small discovery. And further more I am happy that Kedehern is joining us in our little quest.

It is always good to be able to take some time to discuss military training, the virtues of a leader, the place of chivalry in warfare and the relevance of the P's.
I look forward to further talks with the Lord Pasquale Malespero in the future.

Winter is nearly here. Just a few more breaths before the air comes out in puffs of mist. Maybe the cold will invigorate me and make me feel more alive.

If not, maybe someone should light a fire under my butt and try heat instead.

How some of my kin and acquaintances live like this, I find hard to imagine - but I have (briefly, no doubt) found myself once again a figure of widespread public recognition. To an extent, I am of course accustomed to such things when on Esterhold... but my life here in the capital is largely that of a bookworm, and it is profoundly strange to stand out like this amidst the throngs of Arx. Pleasant in its own way, but it is daunting to consider what this might be like for more than a few days at a time.

I find myself wrecked with guilt, overwhelmed with the feeling that something so awful and tragic has happened to our people, and knowing that if I had done something sooner, it might not have happened. All of these innocent people having suffered...

There are some days where one struggles to get up, to face the world... and this is one of those days.

But one must continue and try to face what has happened, to right the wrong, to stop it, so others do not meet the same tragedy.
