The questions are getting harder. This one has taken me a long while.

Day 3. What is one small thing that you think the compact as a whole needs to change for the better?

This is a difficult question to answer. I say that, because one thing I've learned in my study of Lagoma is that change has to come from within. The will has to be of one's own, not dictated from on high. We all have our oaths and our orders, of course, and those are of their own value. But when I think of a change that would better the Compact, it's not something that can be ORDERED. It's something that is felt and believed and fought for.

So rather than choosing any one particular thing to change, I think my answer is this: I would hope to see every member of the Compact reflect on their own goals and dreams. How they might change themselves to better the Compact and better serve their neighbors. Whether that change be big or small, the combined force would be something to be reckoned with.

I've applied with the Champions, since I imagine that is the proper thing to do. I mean if I'm going to agree when people call for crazy souls to hit each other with sticks and sharp objects I imagine I may as well do it properly. I've several friends who have decided to go the route of being champions, so I would be in good company. Though come to think of it I don't know if any of them can ride a horse. Hope jousting challenges don't catch on.

So on a whim I decided to agree to serve as champion for a joust, and they accepted. It isn't that I don't think I can joust, it is that I've never had to find out before. I'll honor Gloria and give it my all, just fingers crossed I don't end up on the wrong side of the horse by the end of it.

I know far too many people that have interest in boats or seafaring. There have been several threats of forcing my person aboard one to end the long standing truth that I have never ever been aboard one. To that I say it better be a calm day with the ability to disembark at any given time.

I have yet to know what my reaction will be but I have heard some tales about sailing that are none too pleasant.

Trust.

It is more than a word. I take you into my confidence and you repay me by breaking that confidence without so much as a by your leave.

Trust is now broken.

Once broken...

Lesson. Learned.

All of those last things I must put in place before heading to Setarco are complete. I go with complete confidence in the commanders of our troops, and the other High Generals of both Velenosa and Thrax; something I am sure may surprise people as we have never been traditional allies. But let this show that when there are innocent lives at stake, we will all band together to do what needs to be done. And that we can work together, all contributing, so that the best ideas from every fealty can be pulled together.

And each night, I will pray to the Gods of the Pantheon that we serve them well in our endeavor.

I know, right?

... What if leaving smut books in strange places were apart of Lady Margerie's secret master plan to bring about the Great Valardin Baby Boom of 1008? It would be genius.

To the owner of A Triple Threat,

Please don't leave your smutty novels around the Audience Hall for my brother to find them. We don't need his head to explode with this book's rather... Okay, please leave more smutty romance novels that'll make my brother's head explode.

Thanks,

I think there's validity in words that are not sugarcoated.

All I meant is that I wish one of your family members had come! I think Thrax would have added interesting thoughts and views to the conversation that we lacked. Big words or small.

Your Highness,

I am very sorry I accidentally took the glass. I got a bit flustered and didn't realize it until I was a few blocks away. I have since returned it with three other glasses I've bought to make up for this terrible mistake. Please accept my most humble apology.

Go ask Talen or Eleyna, we've spent hours measuring the length of swords in more ways than one for a long time now. They'll be able to paraphrase something that'll sound nicer than how I've put it from time to time.

Don't like debating personally, don't like a lot of big words either.

One of my favorite Northern drinking songs.

We're merry folk of Redrain
So sturdy and so stout
When the day is done
When it's time for fun
We'll drink and sing and shout

You weak livered milk drinkers
Can let your throats run dry
Cause there's just one drink
That we will sink
Until the day we die

Drinking ale in the halls of Whitehold
The maidens and the men
We swig our brew
Until we spew
Then we fill our mugs again

You can keep your filthy vodka
It makes our bellies bleed
Cause when we raise our flagon
To another dead demon
There is just one drink we need
Whis-key!
Whis-key!

Chug one more whiskey
And another whiskey shot
And another whiskey shot
Till you fall down
Chug one more whiskey
And another whiskey shot
and another whiskey shot, warrior!

After the long hard days
Of hunting and of war
Our throats are tired and thirsty
And our bodies drenched in gore

But we won't waste our evenings
Feeling tired and feeling spent
We perk right up when we breathe in
That wholesome whiskey scent

That Velenosan brandy
Too fruity for these tongues
You can keep your fancy alto wine
It tastes like cattle dung!

Honeyed liquor tastes great to you
But here we like it plain
Just fill my mug
With the mighty jug
Of fire, heart and grain

Drinking ale in the halls of Whitehold
The maidens and the men
We swig our brew
Until we spew
Then we fill our mugs again

You can keep your filthy vodka
It makes our bellies bleed
Cause when we raise our flagon
To another dead demon
There is just one drink we need
Whis-key!
Whis-key!
Whis-key!

Chug one more whiskey
And another whiskey shot
And another whiskey shot
Till you fall down (Whis-key!)
Chug one more whiskey
And another whiskey shot
and another whiskey shot, warrior!

The Princess Velenosa's debate was most illustrative of the differences in Oathlands and Lycene ethics. It would seem our southern members of the Compact approach life with a far more utilitarian bent to morality. Hopefully Legate Orazio's words made a lasting impact.

Your Highness:

Those of the Mourning Isles do not make a habit of standing around discussing military might for longer than absolutely necessary. For those who take up the sword, what matters most is deed and not turn of phrase.

Also, debates are for those who have nothing better to do. A round of rum and shirtless brawling, though...

House Thrax, or the houses of the Mourning Isles in general, are far from the only ones in the Compact who could have spoken up for the virtues of military might. There are plenty of other noble houses across Arvum who rely on their martial prowess.

I worked VERY hard on an apology, perhaps the best apology I have ever composed, but I am told it would not be well received. So, I delivered it to an unsuspecting party in front of the Gilded Page and got two very satisfying reactions from it. Surely most people would love to know that someone worked so hard on perfecting the language surrounding so sincere a thing that might be delivered simply, but instead was done in a glorious manner? In prose so heartfelt and wrought with meaning to inspire forgiveness in even the coldest hearts or most wounded of pride?

I suppose it has been made abundantly clear that I don't know my audience here. Fine! I submit. Though I cannot promise it will be terse. There has to be at least one mention of weeping bitter tears of disappointment for anyone to take it seriously.

I think that Salon debate was success--hic!--ful. Except for Sir Jeffeth, who apparently stole a wine glass and sent poor Vlad into a panic attack. VLAD. RELAX. NOBODY'S GONNA FIRE YOU.

So - the debate. I drank a lot, obviously, but I think the conversation steered in quite an invigorating direction, which is all I can ask for. Princess Roxana is delightful and not a dummy; Duchess Belladonna is as well. Orazio seemed to think that the murder of people via military means is less sinful than assassinations, but I remain unconvinced.

There was absolutely no conclusion, which I suppose is part of the point of debate, and I was honestly disappointed that no one in House Thrax showed up to argue for their military might!
