I've heard it said in the Compact, folk ain't should give an order they'd not follow. I heard the same in the woods. It's sound and true.

Most folk in Arx, though, seem to see it only in wrongs and rights. Which it is, ain't doubt. But more, it's good sense.

If you ain't would follow a command, it's like the one you're commanding feels the same. If you give a command ain't followed, it's more like every command to come seems less the way thing'll be, more a kind suggestion.

One or two ain't listen, you can shout 'em in line, slap 'em down, or make of 'em example to the rest. But if they all get the notion they can do how they like, it leaves the commander a lonely fool in a fancy shirt. Why armies break all at once, whole lines melting like snow in rain. More'n once I've seen a broken army with a leader shouting at the crowd to fall in line, as much use if they'd been ordering skies to rain or snows to melt. If them you're commanding ain't think you're in charge, they're right.

The days grow shorter and possibilities more plentiful. The challenge comes in weighing those choices in these waning hours. Is it unseemly to do the selfish when the selfless needs tending? Where is the balance? I suppose that is the truest challenge of Arx.

Eddard has been working quite diligently where he thinks I cannot see it for Duskshire's improvement. I think I will increase his clothing stipend again. He has more than earned it.

Relationship Note on Sina

I wasn't sure if I would be welcome in the Shrine of Vellichor after last time, so I have avoided the shrine completely since before I was married. Today I screwed up my courage and went visiting. The Archscholar assured me that I was welcome.

It is comforting to know.

The People's Tournament is a lot of fun.

Me and Ev are gonna go street sledding later. Yep. Even when he's doing things that matter, and aren't actually fun, he's happy. Mud King of the Lowers!

Relationship Note on Vitalis

Vitalis, who ranges far and wide, questions (almost) everything, and stands by his friends and family even when it may be unpopular to do so, surely does his father proud.

I, for one, certainly am.

Relationship Note on Marzio

I have recently offered Marzio a position in which I believe he will flourish. If all he desires from it is an opulent hat of grandiose size, then he shall have it. As to other matters that may or may not concern a particular Lady of Grimhall? Time will tell!

Relationship Note on Dianna

Dianna has returned to Arx a changed woman.

Or perhaps that is not entirely accurate.

Dianna has returned to Arx a woman evolved. My faith in her has never been misplaced, nor shall it ever be.

Alessia wrote recently that I am a source of strength for her. The secret to my success is that I am surrounded by my family. Each day I am both impressed and proud of them, and they - which includes you, Alessia! - inspire me to continually seek higher and greater glories. It is my personal opinion that, as the Head of a House, ones immediate family is a microcosm for those men and women that swear fealty to you over all. As you work for them, so they work for you.

Relationship Note on Willow

Incense cedar, elderberry,
scattered chapels of willow trees.
Graygreen leaves tremble like
my beggar's palms

on the branches, waxing
resinous in sunlight,
lingering with warmth in plenty,

here, now, an afternoon
in folded grass and golden pyres,
of bracken under broken

granite, lucid sky. Stillness after
the ache of love and heave
of summer while you,
my lady,
dream within your chapel of willow.

Sometimes silence is more a loud and telling answer than hours upon hours of empty words.

Sometimes silence means absolutely nothing at all.

The key, and challenge, is reading it right.

Setting a deadline is the worst way to inspire yourself.

Clearly we need to find you better inspiration. Perhaps a change of surroundings?

Find me for a night for cards at the Spirits.

I'll bring the whiskey.

And so we move on to our next quests for the Templars. To recover that which was lost, to build new to replace what has fallen by the way side, and to hunt down those who still persist in opposing the Gods.

I believe that to be well rounded and to help serve the people of the Oathlands, and to help Kedehern with the Agriculture college, I need to learn more about the land, how to work it, how to grow and nurture it. I already possess a great deal of knowledge and skill with animals, and the wilderness, but not actually learning to work it the land, to understand it, to support and sustain it. So that it may flourish, and thus we as well may do so too.

The restored memorial at Merchant's Gate is a work of art - on the part of not only those who restored it, but those who crafted it long ago. I never thought that such an ancient weathered thing could be so beautiful, but I was mistaken. The love and dedication in the work of those who have made it new again is obvious, and it is a captivating reminder of our difficult history. The memorial should be seen by everyone, at least once.
