Relationship Note on Aiden

That's almost touching, but the concern's misplaced. There are probably thousands of better targets for your offer in the city. Sincerely, I'd suggest starting with young shav refugees (or young refugees in general. I know, I know, you've already said you've been doing this, but if you've got more time, there's always more out there. And as much as I don't like your Menagerie, I won't deny that they'd probably love being shown around it).

Memories are just memories. I remember the horses tasting delicious. Everything does in those circumstances, even when the horses were also starving. See? A bright side to everything.

My adventure with Gunther started well before I meet him as it started when I saved Prince Aiden's life.
Shortly after the siege I had decided I wanted to find a companion, one who could do patrols with me when I was needed and to fight at my side.
Prince Aiden invited me to the Grayson Kennels and that is where I meet Gunther, he was the only one of his litter to come to the pen door and when I saw him I knew he was the one.
He has since been at my side, no matter what he is there, when I have my low times he reminds me that everything will be okay (Ever get licked by a Rotti).
I do not think I could see my life with out him, he is what helps make me want to continue on when things seem very rough and impossible, he part of the Saik family and a Iron Guard in my mind and I would have it no other way

I don't have a favorite memory of my bird. My bird is a fucking jerk. With the worst sense of humor of any bird anywhere. And yeah, he's laughing at you. I'm pretty sure.

He just started following me around one day when I was eating lunch by the construction site while we were still building the Shrine. He stared at me for long enough that I found it unnerving and I finally gave him the rest of my food.

He's followed me around ever since. He brings messages to people because Tristan taught me how to get him to perform but I have the constant nagging feeling that he's like ... going to get bored one day and peck my eye out. He's rude to people's cats, he tries to ride people's dogs, and he basically just won't leave me the fuck alone.

He has a way of squawking at the least opportune time to interrupt any given conversation to remind us all that he's there and he'd like any carrion we happen to have on our persons. He also likes muffins. Considering the amount of food this little bird consumes I really have no idea how he remains so healthy-looking and streamlined instead of being a fat puffball of feathers.

His name is Binky because I can't say "asshole" in front of the faithful.

Remember my companion, hah. Try and forget the little shit.

Shut up you.
I remember watching her as a baby. Stupid sister of mine thinking I'd enjoy that kind of thing. Luckily we just sword-fought most of the time.

I think this sort of thing is a little bit silly, but I don't know how Dog feels about it so who am I to deny him a moment in the sun?

Dog belonged to my mentor's neighbors, when we lived in the Gray Forest. He ate Petrae's chickens and lurked around the cottage until I ran him off. Repeatedly.

Once Brand came to the Forest, I came to Arx to try to get help, only to get caught behind the walls during the Siege. When it lifted, I went back to the cottage as soon as I could, but Petrae was dead.

Dog was there too, lurking in the bushes and all skin and bone. Ned gave him a sandwich and he followed us back to the city. I tried to get him to leave for awhile but he steadfastly refused. Finally I just sort of...gave up.

He's drooly and clumsy and slow and he snores and he's ugly as sin but he's the one creature in the world that I know I can rely on. Maybe one day I'll find out his real name.

What? No, no. The closest thing I have to an inspirational animal companion story is the winter that food supplies got so low we had to start butchering our own horses to stay alive. I think we should leave that one out of the Prince's contest.

Are you writing this down again? Why do you lot keep doing that?

Peanut is only about a year old, but he's already saved my life more times than I can count. He's a truly heroic hound, because he has recognized the greatest threat to my life:

Air.

See, Peanut knows that I'm in the most danger when I'm breathing. So most mornings, when he realizes that I've fallen in to trouble yet again -- I'm sure it's so frustrating how many times he has to keep saving me from the same thing -- he selflessly flings his entire body on top of me and smothers me with his fur. At which point I of course wake up, still alive. Thanks to Peanut.

He also helps provide physical conditioning by weighing so much when I have to shove him off of my face.

Though admittedly, not quite a story, as the last journal was immediately swallowed by paw prints... I do not know the wicked little feline has ever done anything terribly note worthy.

Other than being adorable.

Or.. very nearly destroying a rather significant collection of books in the rectory at one stage. Which is best left unspoken.

Still..

I admit that Vashti probably is not the most, affectionate feline to most people and he has attacked more than one of my friends, if not gone hunting after their pets (I am still so terribly sorry, Fortunato), but for all of his flaws and his terrible attitude there is no greater company than my darling little Vashti.

I realise to almost everyone else he just seems snide, or disinterested, or entirely too interested but no one ever sees him when we are alone (and away from the dogs) in my office. Or how his wide his eyes get when I am changing and he chases after the sashes of my robes. He is always gentle when he sets up on my lap at my desk, never sets claws to my silks, and his purr is the sweetest things I have ever heard.

He was a gift to me from someone very dear, and that alone is something special, but I love my little companion when he sits and watches my quill as I write, or his persistent napping on my parchments. I love him because I never feel alone with him, because there is little else I enjoy more than coming home to an otherwise empty kitchen to hear his mewling as if he were telling me all about his day.

Though, I would like if he grew out of this phase of being obsessed with ink pots...

((This journal page has a couple of inky little paw prints on the far corner))

The first time we sparred, she smashed me into an urn five feet across the room. The second time we sparred, she smashed me into a different urn five feet across the room. The third time we sparred, I made sure to remove all urns from the room.

It's good to see you again, my stalwart knight.

Thank you for leading the way Merek! Your thoughts are very much appreciated on the matter.

I think I'll speak of Baron Archibald Chirpington. He's the first gyrfalcon I had. I remember I hatched him when I was about thirteen years old. It was in the mews at Bastion. Our bond was strong then but it has grown stronger since. He's been a loyal friend and companion to me, especially in those lonely days before Arx, when the wind at my back seemed the only whisper of comfort. I called him Butler then, I knew not of his true name. Now that I think upon it, it was such a rude name, though as a child Prince, it amused me, for he was trained to retrieve and we began our long study together to train both of us on how to make him send and retrieve missives, among regular falconry pursuits.

I remember the first time I became aware of the deeper connection between us. The screech he made alerted me to something vastly different, while I was feeding him. I don't know why, but I had a strong conviction to go look around, as if I knew something was amiss. I came upon a knight who had fallen off his horse and shattered his leg. Who is to say what would have happened had I not found him. From then, I started to pay closer attention to my gyrfalcon and the other falcons that I trained and raised.

Since my time in Arx, he has adjusted miraculously. He's keen to fly missives and seems to get it right, most of the time. I know there may have been letters misplaced, for many I have written have never received a response. But I don't blame him, he's had a greater threat on his mind. It may be startling to people to hear, but it's because of the Baron, that I was able to alert Crown Princess Lark and the Voices of Grayson about Brand's attempt at three northern gates. It was also because of the Baron that I learnt of the Nox'alfar committing follies in the Gray Forest, a matter also issued forth to the Crown Princess and Princess Reese.

It was during the siege that I realized his name was not Butler, but instead, Baron Archibald Chirpington. I owe him my thanks and gratitude and he is always allowed to fly free when he wishes - maybe more of us owe him thanks than I realize. I do what I can for him and I don't keep him caged. Our bond is of choice.

I am home.

Well, not //home// home. Home home is the Twainfort, from now 'til eternity. But home for now is Heron Hall, where my darling sister and shower-averse brother-in-law and the rest of our court have set up shop.* Last night, I heard Mia laugh. Last night, I watched Thesarin brood. Last night, I felt Esoka punch me in the shoulder. So today my home for now feels much more like home.

I shall miss my lumpy bed in the east tower; my favorite quill (in the inkwell of my favorite desk); my library that smells of vellum and chains and the knowledge of an age. Yet I shall assuredly not miss those lonely autumn nights with only my reports and a single candle for comfort. Those nights I consign to my dear and loyal seneschal, whose hands now hold the reins of our lands on the cusp of winter. May he find warmth in duty, as I did. May he find more warmth there than I did.

N

* N.B. To the literal-minded among you: There is no shop in Heron Hall. We cannot sell you anything. But if you're reading this, you should know that many fine local establishments are selling Riven's artisanal pots, which are things of beauty. Take it from me, an admittedly biased observer.

I have heard about a new contest that has come up recently about the animals we have with us. I would like to submit the story of Moxie and place it into the records for access. Moxie is a Velenosian fox with a nice smoky coat, one that is said to be a fortune for those it follows. It was during my travels that I found her, and she followed me while I was selling my wares, as well as making preperations to travel to Arx. She was hungry, I could tell, and most foxes don't seem fond of people unless raised for it.

In any case, since then, she has followed me wherever I travel, always chasing things, being the happiest of sorts. I learned she possibly came from a fox breeder in Velenosian lands, and spoke with them, though it was said the pup she was, she was likely from a litter that had come about in the wild from one of theirs. She has been a wonderful friend, for a fox. She also seems to be a kit still in some ways, especially as she is not the fastest in growing up. I love her.

I am not quite sure what to make of the Inquisition's public question and answer forum. It seems to be the thing people are doing these days, and I think that is great, however it seems I walked in when certain matters were discussed which upset a Legate. While I can see issue with certain knowledge being shared, there is some that should be shared if for the protection of others. That said, my main concern was answered, and it seems that the Inquisition and Iron Guard will be keeping together with their old cooperation, and with the recent changes of leadership, this will hopefully make things much easier on the Compact.
