What an eventful day. I attended the King for a few hours and he turned out to have quite the sense of humour. Better yet, there were bacon-wrapped pickles. There was also a memorial service for the old Lord Commander and that I attend with less glee but great pride. Good men will be remembered.

I wish I could say that I expect to be such a person but truthfully it's enough for me to have a good roof over my head, plenty of money and food, and that my liege seems to be a man of the finest character. I am ready to put my life on the line with the knowledge that likely I will someday lose it.

Beats running messages and turning drunks out of taverns 'round first light.

It is among the great sorrows of mankind that so many prefer pleasant lies to ugly truths.

Truth is the first victim of vice; I prefer the blackened and bleeding shard of honesty to all the perfumed platitudes of fair deceivers.

It occurred to me the other day that I made the most basic, childish error in labeling Petrichor a forest god when talking about a vaguely related matter. Obviously, that's not remotely accurate. He's the opposite of a forest god. Even I should have known that. Once I realized the mistake, my confusion cleared right up, and everything fell into place.

It's not better, but it's less confusing.

I have no trouble writing about intimate or sexual things in the journals, but I do draw the line at cornholing.

Ruining my reputation.

Wasn't a bad job you and Clover did aside from the heart. Ought to find a northern style to copy.

I attended the reception for Lady Commander General Calypso and Prince Anze. It so wonderful to see them getting married, finally. They make a great couple are so very happy. Their reception was fun, with horse racing and everything.

Oh, certainly we have other methods of fishing in the mainlands for freshwater fish as well, from spear, to pole, to net, and bow and arrow, and more.

They simply aren't known as noodling, that's all.

I think I'd actually rather like to try my hand at some of the larger specimens out in the ocean at some point, if I can ever find the opportunity.

You call your competitors noodlers? Bahahaha.

While in the Isles we enjoy a catch bare-handed we also have plenty of different machinations devoted to fishing. Some people enjoy a spear through the gut of a salmon. You can catch at least a dozen on the end of a sharp rock if you do it right and mind your weight. My personal favorite was the good old harpoon straight into the depths and yanking it right back to the deck. Could catch plenty of bigguns with those guns.

Sharks especially were fun to spear. They even bit back once or twice. This old man of ours, Merle being his name, he lost his whole hand to a great white that he got too frisky with. Funny shit.

Relationship Note on Leona

My cousin Leona. We've had a strange relationship to say the least. Definitely not an all-around pleasant one and certainly not what I would call 'love', but maybe 'Thraxian' would be a better word. If you could even describe something so fucking vaguely.

I still can't say I'd have done the same thing in her position. I was angry when I heard too. But now I look at her and I just think of all the time wasted on hate that could've been better spent on getting fucking smashed on rum and dance like good men and women of the sea should do. She's hardly a stone's throw from an Isle's lady, but she's my blood and she can swing a sword with the best of them. For a people like us known as conquerors and warmongers, having someone of our ilk protecting the King does still give me a good laugh. I mean that in a good way so make sure you write it all cute and shit, scribe.

So, thank you, Cousin. For the laughs and not giving up on your family after the mess uncle made. Out of my favorite cousins, you're in the top ten.

They practice Noodling in the Stoneburn Hills, as well. I've even done such, many times. There however, it means something very different, as I shall explain.

Specifically, it means using your bare hands to catch flathead catfish for sport and food. The choice of catfish as the prey is not arbitrary, but comes from the circumstances of their habitat. Flathead catfish live in holes or under brush in rivers and lakes and thus are easier to capture due to the unmoving nature of their dwelling. To begin, a noodler goes underwater to depths ranging from only a few feet to twenty feet and places his hand inside a discovered catfish hole. If all goes as planned, the catfish will swim forward and latch onto the fisherman's hand, usually as a defensive maneuver, in order to try to escape the hole. If the fish is particularly large, the noodler can hook the hand around its gills.

Mind, the average flathead is around forty pounds, though I've caught fish as heavy as one hundred twenty pounds. These are fairly muscular beasts, and there have been fish spotted that weigh over three hundred, so it can be a fairly dangerous activity, and I don't recommend it for the inexperienced, lest they lose an arm, or worse, drown.

Ha! Did you see the look on Agnarr's face today? Not just his actual expression, dour fellow that he can be, but the braids in his beard? Teach him to walk upon me in the bathing house! Not that I minded all too much. Never braided a giant's beard before...

It's a good manly beard. Ignore the part where the tips of two of the braids come together to form a heart.

Well! I've met a giant once or twice before but I don't think I've ever braided one's beard. I don't think poor Agnarr had any idea what he was in for when he ended up in the bathing house with me. I imagine he thinks he looks utterly ridiculous now! I don't know, it was kind of fun. And it's a good, manly series of braids too! Nothing to be ashamed of. Even if they do form a heart at the tips.

It is quite clear that I am in dire need of lessons. If I am to provide counsel to all in the Palace, then I should be better able to address them appropriately and understand their worlds.

And most importantly, listen.

I’ve spent too long lecturing and being heavy handed. It has brought little rewards except for the more hardened believers.
I need to listen and learn.

Oh. And not to throw out puns to distract from my failings.

I met a Lord Kaldur Seliki earlier this week. He was asking about entry into the Society of Explorers for the sake of his sister, who he hopes to entice to the city. I somewhat suspect he hopes to join himself as well.

He was an affable fellow, if a bit over-excitable. He also asked many questions, some of which I wasn't quite ready to answer as I had only just returned to the city. Thankfully, Aislin arrived and was able to fill in the gaps I could not.

I must admit that I cannot wait to get back out into the field, even though I've only just come home. There's a certain sort of solace in the wilderness that I just cannot find in the city. In the meantime, I seek to hone that knowledge that I already have, so I might be of more use to the Society and, perhaps, the family as well.
