Living in a city is hard. Why aren't there more trees? Living so close together with so many people would drive anyone mad. I am convinced this is why so many journals are so confusing. Not enough time under the trees.

Relationship Note on Lydia

Lydia has returned from Stonedeep. It was good to see her today and to sit and talk. We are the only two left from our immediate family.

Though she is feeling the pressures keenly, I think she will make an excellent Duchess, one that is perhaps better suited to the collaboration and compromise that is necessary for the Compact's continued survival than we have had in generations. There is a lot of work to be done, but I know she is up to the task.

Speaking of which, Nightgold needs an heir...

Fair warning.

I am personally certain that Captain Audric of the Valorous Few has rescued a kitten orphanage from certain destruction and I am so appalled to read people maligning his good name this way.

Relationship Note on Shard

It's okay if you feel how you do. You clearly have no one else to spend your time on, so I'm touched and will consider it my duty to keep your life interesting.

About that job? I can't promise you'll get to kill things, all the time, but there might be a few things that need killing. Think about it. You can rib me for hours on end and we can squabble like monkeys over a banana. I think my fellow explorers will appreciate the amusement.

And I am not keeping anything a secret. I have more than once announced who I love in various journals and we don't hide our affections.

That's. Um. No. You're considerably mistaken.

Even if you weren't, it was clear from our first (and I stress, only) meeting you're decidedly interested in someone else. I hope that's not supposed to be a secret, because if it is, you're the worst person at keeping secrets I've ever passingly met.

I always thought the first rule of being a mercenary leader was take care of your men, followed by be greedy within reason.

Can't very well foster good relations with clients if they don't have good references for you, after all.

I notice you like to comment on my journals since we met. This leads me to believe you want my attention. I'm flattered.

But all I can ever give you is a job. Expeditiona require warriors with sarcastic wit and selfish motivations. You might fit the need.

As I walk the halls of the Palace, I am struck by how I am a stranger once more to the Children of the Faith. Their faces are familiar but foreign. It shall be a disservice if I linger at the sidelines and observe. This pursuit to know the people of my parish has led me to here -- the first of many introductions. To know the King's Own.

Ow. A morning that reminds me of every bone and muscle in my body.
It's a gratifying pain and one that'll worsen as time progresses, but worth the experience.

Remind me to thank the Lord Commander later for these lessons. She works tirelessly to prepare the squires and hone the knights' skills.

I have my own thoughts on your number 2. I don't disagree.

People are innately selfish, because this is how anyone survives. At least, when survival is a factor, but I don't think that instinct goes away just because someone has money and power. In fact, money and power might actually feed it, bloat it up beyond reason. But if we didn't have it, then we'd never raise a weapon to defend ourselves. We'd never hunt to feed ourselves. We'd never take in any way to provide for ourselves. Humans wouldn't survive as a species or individuals without some form of selfishness. We're all selfish to some degree. And we all draw the line at what's too selfish generally just beyond where it's comfortable for us.

Animals are selfish too, they just don't get self conscious about it. I've never met an animal that wouldn't take food they thought they could get away with taking. For the record, bears are confident they can get away with a lot (they're right).

You give me too much credit, love. I can be very selfish and stingy! I'm just good at hiding it sometimes.

But I do like making people happy, particularly those I care about. And sometimes even complete strangers. I believe if you make someone's day, they will remember and pay it forward in the future. Sometimes ten fold! They remember when you were there for them.

Also... Audric might not be saving kitten orphanages, but he's not nearly as bad as he pretends!

Rule number whatever of being a sellsword. Selfishness, my friends, is a virtue. It's what makes the world go round! People talk and talk and talk and talk about altruism, but what really makes the world turn is the base desire of 'how do I get what I want'. Sure, what you want can be a good thing! But until you accept that selfishness lets you DO that, that you need to impose YOUR will upon the world to make that happen, nothing ever happens! Never be opposed to selfishness. Greed is good, like most things, in moderation.

I placed fifth in the Iron Pentathlon's foot race, which pleases me. The people who beat me were all accomplished athletes and heroes in their own ways - Duke Cristoph took the gold, with Princess Reese Grayson taking the silver, barely ahead of Prince Fergus and Princess Marian. There was some discussion which of those two went third, but in the end, Princess Marian received the bronze. She ran for Redrain, but I hope no one will hold it against me that I take a little Oathlands pride in her performance.

I barely beat out Prince Luca, who at that point in the race seemed more concerned wwith cheering on his wife than his own score - adorable, really. He in turn barely beat out Lady Eirlys. Which means that, by official tally, the Oathlands scored first, fifth, and seventh place, with an unofficial third (and, according to some, fourth, for if they get to claim Princess Marian, we should be allowed to claim Prince Fergus. Or so the reasoning goes).

Not a bad showing at all. And I quite enjoyed myself.

What I've learned about people (exempting Silas - because I've met no one else like him):

1) Many do have an animal companion in their lives and for good or ill, they've written about it. Animals do inspire people.
2) People are innately selfish otherwise. They'll take what they can get from you, without mercy. Unless your name is Silas Whitehawk, who is not selfish at all. He is a giver. Too few of those around!
3) People like spectacles. If you're not a spectacle, you're boring and uninteresting - and apparently seen as USELESS. Silas disagrees.
4) People won't need you until they need you to do something for them. (I'm guilty of this too and I'm sorry if I've made someone feel this way).
5) People will not invite you to what's important to them unless you cater solely to them. (I cater to Silas but I love him).
6) People will want to get to the finish line before you so they can lift up the trophy and be a hero. Little do they know, medals do not matter. But we all love Silas' medals - keep them coming love!
7) People get married way too fast. And misplaced my invite. This makes me sad.

Relationship Note on Esoka

I have pledged to instruct Dame Esoka on the finer aspects of needlework. If I am lucky, she will fling her embroidery hoop across the room some number of times fewer than five. If I am unlucky, she will fling said hoop across the room substantially more times than that, at the conclusion of which said hoop will lie in ruins around my neck. This is why I am tonight reviewing several authoritative treatises on the matter. I suppose it is possible that my mastery of this subject in theory will not translate to the ability to sew in practice. In that unlikely event, however, I shall take solace in two facts:

(1) It is Esoka, not I, who will be handling the needles; and

(2) We shall be making only a kerchief.

The task could not be simpler.

I hope that those playing the game are enjoying themselves; from everything I have heard, it seems to be progressing just as we hoped it would.

It should also be noted that the King will be joining our awards celebration, and will be doing much of the awarding of prizes. Exciting!

There are still teams that could use another player or two, for those who wish to join in the final hours. I bet a few of them could use some help!
