Relationship Note on Gwenna

Just making sure that everyone heard Gwenna mentioning her birthday is this month. GWENNA'S BIRTHDAY THIS MONTH.

Making sure everyone knows our Snowflower is apparently a summer princess!

As this is my first summer in the city of Arx as well, I am grateful for all these wonderful notes on how to (to steal Father Orazio's mirth a moment) /weather/ it, quite truly! I have yet to swim in the ocean here and perhaps should try. I thought the only thing I might look forward to about July in the south was my birthday, but an ocean swim is now added to that admittedly short list. While some do sneak into the scrying pool at the villa, I find I am not quite bold enough to attempt that.

Sometime I will go to the ramparts, though. While still hot, if one finds some shade, the breeze high up on the walls is pleasant enough.

I am not sure you are making this shark wrestling/fight expedition sound less interesting. Are you trying to make it less interesting? You are failing.

A -maw-. Thrax cousins. You should show me this maw!

Fine. At least I promise not to try this alone without more experienced watery people.

Relationship Note on Orazio

Oh, sometimes I carry the armor with me to the training centers. The helm I wear because it makes the kids laugh and smile. If I'm in full armor while I run it's just for training purposes. But it's a good point about the affording it! I'll think about that. The children jumping on you is sort of fun. And also good training to make you strong and sturdy!

The Bear Scouts are a different kind of scouts. I suppose I should make them their own post to explain what I'm doing. BE ON THE LOOKOUT!

Wow. those last points though. Not exercising for that long? And no alcohol?

Send help. We may have found the foe to lay me low - Summer. We may become bitter enemies you and I! (Well, except I mean of course the cycle of the seasons are great and the Gods and yay for all that. But I am going to be so happy when winter is back).

If you're truly interested in wrestling a shark, which I do not advise, all one must do is splash around in the ocean waters like a wounded fish. It helps if there is blood in the water too.

Honestly though Princess, there are sharks that are big enough to swallow you whole in one bite out there. I was recently visiting my sister Alarissa at the Thrax Estate, and they have these jaws of a shark that are big enough to swallow /the room/ put up in a place aptly named 'The Maw'.

Some things even bears should not push their luck on.

I’ve seen you playing kickball with children on the Judgment Green before. Perhaps you could give the Bear Scouts some coaching.

Relationship Note on Agatha

The Scholar who directed my attention to Princess Agatha Redrain's journal was, dare I say, smirking. Something about large letters and bears?

It makes interesting reading, at any rate. Regarding Her Highness' comments on the season, I might say:

1) I generally do not wear full armor in the city, as it serves little practical purpose (unless duties require it, which mine do not) except to demonstrate to all who care that one can, in fact, afford full armor in the city. Likewise, I do not believe I have ever worn a bear helm, nor had any children not related to me by blood ever jump on me, much less every block.

2) I would not suggest myself as the leader of a scouting company unless you wish to send /another/ scouting company to find us all after I get us hopelessly lost. While I have a moderate degree of talent in many things, I must confess that wilderness navigation is not one of them.

3) General tips for weathering (ha! ...forgive me) the summer heat - do not schedule physical practices or heavy degrees of exertion for the hottest point of the day, particularly if you will be working outside. Before dawn and around dusk are the best times to exercise in the summer, and I myself prefer the pre-dawn hours. Wear lighter clothing (in weave and fabric) whenever possible, and styles which are loose and flowing, with dark colors for preference. This is especially important in Arx, where the mesas tend to lift us up where we might find a steady breeze. If you tend to sweat heavily, less clothing is better, both for smell and to allow the sweat to dry more quickly. If your duties permit, it's often wise to schedule an additional cool bath just after the hottest part of the day, to wash off the dried sweat and accumulated dirt - this will help with itchiness and stickiness. Drink plenty of fresh water or juice - alcohol is lovely, but not the best to keep you healthy in the heat, and milk spoils quickly. Open windows wherever possible to let the breeze flow into your rooms. Hot, still air is not only unpleasant, but it breeds miasma and can cause sickness.

In hopes that this helps our Northern brethren, and anyone else experiencing the heat for the first time.

Go on. I am listening.

If you are ever wondering, it was the shark wrestling that caught my attention.

Though now I'm wondering if there's, you know, a fish equivalent of all these bunny problems.

Swimming in the ocean is always nice, and though it sounds crazy, taking a hot bath is always good too. Everything feels cooler after getting out of a hot bath and it washes off that sticky sweat too.

It's a win win.

Swimming in the ocean is good exercise too though, you can even occasionally wrestle sharks.

I am SURE Father Orazio is a lot smarter than me. But he has clearly not run around the city in full leather armor with a big old bear helm on with children jumping up on him every block. Maybe I should go meet him and try to talk him into taking a turn at leading the Bear Scouts on an adventure one day. I do not know if summer would be his favorite.

Some of this summer stuff makes me miss Farhaven. People talk about bears hibernating in winter, but it's summer that makes me sleepy! But it's too itchy and hot and sticky.

Do not poke sleep deprived cranky summer bears.

HAH. Scholar! That was a very brave poke. You can do that.

So what advice do you southerners have for a very wintery bear dealing with their first summer here?

To the Faithful Reader:

Summer is here. Lagoma will forgive me for having favorites, I'm sure, but summer has always been my favorite season, and that only intensified once I moved here to Arx. In the South, the summer sun seems to melt all the way down to your bones, warming them down to the core. It's a glow that you can carry with you, and provides a memory to get one through the chill of winter. It's not just about the heat, of course - flowers are in full bloom, certain crops grow ripe and ready to be placed on the table, and young livestock have been born and are just now beginning to fill out and grow. It's a wonderful time for feasting, hunting, and enjoying the world.

It does have its downsides, of course - flies and other insects are also growing bold and numerous, sweat trickles down beneath my robes in a rather undignified way, and the parchment of the scrolls and books that I have in my rooms picks up a certain odor that is unmistakably reminiscent of its sheeply origins.

Nonetheless, I welcome the summer, and bask in it. Thank you, oh gods, for your bounty.

So, these past few months I've made a tremendous mistake. I've given so much of myself to one single person that I have forgone all the others in my life that deserved so much better from me. I'll be reaching out to try to make amends. While I hope for forgiveness, I know that I neither deserve nor expect it, but I remain ever hopeful.

I've already managed to reconnect with one such person that I've left behind, and I can't help but feel that receiving her missive was such a turning point in my life. I'm not going to make the same mistakes again.

I am absolutely delighted that my pamphlet, "Ten Principles of War" has been placed on display and is available for reading at the Gilded Page. Lady Monique's staff of scribes have done a wonderful job copying my text in an aesthetically pleasing manner.

Most of all, I hope those that read learn something that they may apply in their own lives and campaigns. I know I did in writing it.

Who would have thought that a ring with a minature of Sanctum sitting on top of it would have been so popular. Yet it has been bought out. Even the one that opens up to find a symbol of the faith inside. By far, I must confess, my favourite piece. Or maybe the two birds buffeting their wings. So many things float through my mind and only so much time to sit and sketch them out then make them. Perhaps one of Farhaven, but what to put inside it. Or the cathedral. All the major cities with something secret inside. So much to make.

I got drunk after the Assembly yesterday and had an idea for a game. You say something you're good at, then say something you're bad at and how you want to improve. Simple shit.

I'm not a smart man. I am approximately smart about a couple of things, but very dumb in others. For instance one thing I'm pretty good at is hittin' things hard and breaking enemy lines. Actually that's two things, but I like 'em both so they'll stick.

One thing I'm very shit at however is being polite. In this day and age, a 'please' and 'thank you' can go a long way I'm noticing. So I'm trying to be better and not shit at talking to people.

Now you.

I haven't seen my daughter since she has been married. I suppose that is a good thing, we are both busy. Her husband I met briefly, the baron of house Moore. A vassal of Kaeton, another Wyrmguard countship. The baron I do not really recall anything about him. I never got involved in whom my daughter marries. Never the less, House Moore is a house disntinguish for its food productions from which we hope to make deals with and alleviate some of the food pressures in Chevelle. I have this idea that will require alot of grain.

For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others.

For beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness.

For poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.

You carry all of these, my Princess, whether you realize it or not.
