Cats are more honest and worthy creatures than humans, anyways.

Relationship Note on Derovai

I think, Derovai Moss, you might have missed my point. We try our best to move toward justice, but I think any understanding we have of the greater concept is, at best, a human understanding. An educated guess. A good idea that we want to be right.

Unless you're so confident you know the whole of the will of the Gods. Then you can move toward your fixed point. You can tell us the true intentions of the Sentinel, and maybe along the way, the true intentions of the other Gods? Though something tells me even you are not willing to admit you know such things.

If you can't see beyond your own life, your own loves, your own personal choices, your own personal dignity, your own personal sacrifices, how can the personal toil or dignity of others matter to you? It doesn't. They aren't people to you; those who are close to you matter with the passion and power of your whole heart, but everyone else is a vague person shape on your horizon or a figure in your ledger, to be discounted or ignored.

The only thing that surprises me is that anyone has any surprise that cats are more important to the leaders of the Mourning Isles than commoners. Haven't you read what Princess Alarissa has to say about the humorous indignities to which she puts her thralls?

The value of oaths of Knighthood is not a price cheaply bought. Service in honor of Limerance is not a joke.

Yet is this the first knighthood that has been bought or spent cheaply? Is this the first time that someone has thought this was funny? Is this the first time that the sacred weight of the relationship between liege and liegeman has been an afterthought? Anyone who thinks the answer is yes just hasn't been paying attention. The Faith is here for you when you wish to be educated about the value of an oath. In the meantime, Victus's cat probably isn't hurting you any more than any other public nonsense.

So, we are granting status to pets now? Untrained and violent ones as well. That is quite interesting, and I am sure rather despiriting to those souls who spent years of toil and training to attain that status, rather than survive a shipwreck out of necessity, being too violent and stubborn to be saved.

Also of note is the fact that in order to be able to lodge complaint or differing opinion, one must be able to best a High Lord in personal combat, during a tournament with some of the fiercest warriors in the Compact. Sorry to all of those whose skills lie elsewhere. Apparently because we cannot wield a weapon our voices do not matter.

Mistress Culler: that same example, of the man stealing bread (to feed his family, and so forth; you know the cliche) was the one we discussed. I said that justice would have that man fed, whereas the law might not, and might see him arrested. In my mind, justice -- the ideal of it under the Sentinel -- never changes. Our application of it in law does.

The Templar saw the application of it as ever-changing, because we all see justice differently, and in that perception lay the changes. It was an interesting conversation, but I think justice, real justice, whatever you might term it, does not depend on a person's perception, now that I am writing this in my Whites (it was a brief meeting, and we did not get so far in the discussion). If you'll forgive me for saying so, I think that the Legate has it right, wherein justice is a fixed point, and one's perception needs to evolve, not the concept itself.

Still, an interesting discussion, I'll admit, and worth thought, certainly more so than many I've had recently.

It does seem like a slap in the face of all knights, past, present, and future. And makes in turn a mockery of the title.

But you heard the king! All those unhappy with the result just had to work harder in defeating Prince Victus! Probably should too, before he has the king knight his various bits.

Or a boon from the king himself could have been expended on the commoners. But I'm just a soldier.

I don’t want to get into philosophy, I don’t like philosophy that much, I just know that I worked a lot fucking harder to get knighted than a cat who refused to die.

New question for the people spending far too much time in the Whites!

What is knighthood, what is it being a knight? On one hand, it is apparently complex and highly regarded enough to warrant an Academy.

On the other hand, a cat just earned knighthood from His Majesty himself!

So which is it?

Relationship Note on Derovai

On the matter of justice: always changing or never changing...

I had a long talk with Father Orazio about this once. And while I'll gladly say he said all this, I should probably warn that my memory of his words and what was actually said probably different. But what I remember coming from it...

Is the awareness that justice, as we see it, is probably a far way from what the Sentinel would want. We talked of compassion versus justice. About forgiveness. About punishments and about the way some may suffer for choices that were more or less out of control. Example: Someone starving steals bread. They're thieves, and they'd be punished if we adhere to the letter of the law. Is that justice? Perhaps, at this moment, in a world where equal application of the law is justice.

But as Father Orazio told me, he believes (and I agree) that justice is not simply this. That justice is the best outcome for the people involved. Punishment is sometimes needed to make change or remind people of the right path, but punishment is never our goal. In a perfect world, where justice is pure, stealing bread might be a crime, but no one would be hungry. So the above situation simply would not happen.

So, does justice change? In some grand, cosmic sense: No. We try to reflect the Gods, and I have a feeling what they represent at their core does not change.

But speaking in any sort of practical way? (Does Derovai Moss speak in practical ways?) Yes, justice is constantly changing. It should change. We should march toward divinity whenever we are able. And surely there are missteps, and confusion, and we step to the side or backwards at times. But let us all hope we keep moving toward the Gods.

My godparents have long since passed into the Shining Lands, so my birthdays have been a solitary affair for quite some time. Today's agenda largely involves spending time at vigil in each of the shrines, and reflecting on my journey over the past year. It has been a very strange one, but that's been true for the last several years.

A great weight has been removed from my soul, but in its place, a greater responsibility calls to me. It could be argued (and has been) that such a responsibility is not mine to take, and more, that it will be ultimately futile. This is very probably true, but I feel obligated to try.

Both of my peers in the Church have passed on, and as is right, the Dominus is carefully considering their successors. The pick up work that I've taken on from both of their workloads has proved enlightening upon areas of the Church administration that I did not realize before. It has been a humbling and informative experience...but I confess that I would not mind if my stacks of paperwork returned to their previous size.

I have made, and lost, friends in interesting places. I have seen too many loved ones pass on, joining the rest of the Saiks on the great Wheel. The world continues to reveal wonders that I have never imagined - some wonderful, some terrible. All provoke awe and worry in equal measure inside my heart.

I have gone entirely gray, now. The man in the mirror is not one that I easily recognize. When did he grow old? Why do my joints ache? I am still adjusting to the change.

For the next year, I hope to fulfill the gods' hopes of me while time yet remains, so that when I go to my rest, it will be with the knowledge in my heart that I did everything I could do to honor the life that I was given, and to repent for my sins.

Is or is not the cat a knight? Because if she’s a fucking knight now, I have a problem with that. And don’t fucking throw the Knights of Petrichor at me, that’s different.

Bad enough to see humans getting knighted right and left for being able to walk and eat an apple at the same time. The Crown better not be knighting cats for not dying.

I will be going delving into The Stacks over the next few days ferociously. I hope I do not get lost in my research and forget to eat like last time. I honestly could live my whole life in the library and be perfectly content. There is nothing more satisfying, mentally, than finally coming up one sentence that ties a thing together. It really is beautiful. As beautiful as intricate gold work on black silk or finely cut gems.

Did you know that Tar is more or less fluid, depending upon its origin and the temperature to which it is exposed? Or that Tar from pine wood is used in making soap and medicinal preparations? Coal-tar derivatives are used in the manufacture of some dyes even. And of course it is used to make ships water tights and keep ropes and wood from deteriorating. Tar comes from many, many, many places.
