So people say it's polite to mention this sort of thing in the journals, so I just wanted to mention that Lady Carita Darkwater and I have split ways and I'm not her protege anymore. With Darkwater Reach -- well -- gone, she can use her resources on other things than me.

Holy hairballs in a beef basket! I don't know how, I don't know if I will ever be so lucky again but I actually not only managed to land a hit on Princess Agatha during the fight, but I did serious damage more than once! She is incredible! Nothing like an amazing brawl to mark the beginning of a wonderful friendship!

Breaking news: Princess Sabella has confirmed the reports, which may be based off of completely inane chatter from the whites, that Bastien, now to be known as Sir Bastien the Sullen, has been knighted in the Order of Grump. I'm told the ceremony was quite beautiful, and that many tears were shed. In other news, Orathy Culler, ever the progressive humanist, has been making waves in the hopes of bringing further attention to the plights of the common man. Will this hero ever rest? I'm told that he won't, dear reader, so long as a single soul yet remains in poverty.

The walled garden at Tyde Tower is quite an accomplishment. Duchess Margot Tyde and Lady Catalana Kennex should be commended for the beautiful design. Should I ever find myself in possession of a grand estate that needs an appropriately grand garden...
The party there was fun, especially the model ship races, even if the one I'd constructed did not make it much further than the starting line. It was a joy to spend time with new friends, and meet interesting people I might not otherwise.
I think I may name the sturdy Thrax vessel I was gifted, the Butterfly, to commemorate the event.

I have returned to Arx, although I am still quite busy catching up on my correspondence so it will likely be a few more days until I am back to my usual rounds. I started reading the whites, but it seems like the most interesting thing that happened was a cat became an adventurer, Master Bastien was knighted and Princess Caith loves medicine!

Rules...
Rules are a funny thing, when you consider them. Whatever the reason is, whoever the issuer is, they are only as good as the loyalty or respect one has for the rule-giver. If someone issues me a rule, and they have nothing that I want or have earned themselves no loyalty to endear me to their cause... well then, I can tell them what their rules are worth.
Still, though. If there is suitable reason to wish to follow a set of rules, I suppose that is a different matter all together. Different faith systems, different honor systems that one pledges themselves to, all of these things things with all of their rules seem only as good as the /desire/ to continue following them.
If my passions and desires dictate which rules I value enough to follow, then reason stands that /I/ make my own rules.
Maybe I've found a few worth following. For a time...

I've been considering lately the merits and shortcomings of opening a leatherworking shop. On one hand, there is the hope that it would be a solid source of income, and I certainly need to find one of those. On the other hand, I worry that owning a shop might tie me down and restrict me from doing the other things that I wish to do.
In any sense, I have been given the name of the Lady that runs the Crafters Guild here in Arx. Perhaps I will speak with her and see what it is that she recommends.

I always find you to be insightful and I appreciate the fact that you often share your perspective. Intellectually I believe I understand what you are saying. It still makes me sad. But that is my emotion and no one else is responsible for that.
The reason I reached out to goodman Bastien was not to try to gain in popularity. I simply sought advice on ways to ensure that the clinic was a place folk would feel safe and comfortable going to. So that my ignorance did not negatively impact those that need the help.
What I have learned from this is there is nothing I can do in the face of those who will hate or be angry but endure it and serve them with the same grace and care we would anyone else. Because when it comes to medicine, everyone IS the same. Whether commoner or king, we all bleed red, we all get sick.

But there are always going to be a handful of folk who are bothered by the capacity of nobles to wield coin and authority in what they see as their neighborhood. At its core, it's not personal. It's a reflection on the autonomy and power commoners would like to have, to control their own institutions in the Lower Boroughs.
So it's possible we'll see rival clinics to this popular project. I think that would be the most interesting form of 'protest', after all. Competition.

...I've decided to sit a while longer at my table before having this reshelved, as there is some sort of commotion on the other side of the Archive and the scholars look more than busy passing journals back and forth to be read and traded and hastily scribbled into and passed back around.

Let it be written here, if not elsewhere, that I sought to add a little entertainment to the second annual compact crew race by dressing as a Grayson born man of the Isles, Lord Washburn Kennex. After the Grayson victory, thanks to the strong backs of our returning team, one of my wife's hounds revealed what many had suspected, that I have in fact lost some of my sight at the battle of Stormwall.
Ariel has been every encouraging, and while I am no longer hiding this disfigurement, I believe for politeness sake I should consider covering it. Where does one go when they are in need of a fashionable eye patch? Do you get one and wear it always, or should I have several so that they might match the occasion? There's research to be done now.

Hating people you don't know is easy. It's the easiest thing in the world. It's a cherished pastime, probably in every society, but certainly this one. Certainly the one I came from. You don't need any particular reasons for it either, but it really, really helps if the people you don't know are also responsible, or you think they're responsible, in some way or another, for something ugly you do happen to know very well. Fear, hunger, cold, death, pain...pick one, or several, or choose something similar. And, while this won't be as easy to relate to, if they're not responsible, it can be enough if they just have something you desperately need instead. It doesn't matter if they'd give it to you. Hate doesn't have to be reasonable.
I grew up hating all kinds of people I didn't know. I didn't give a shit whether they were noble or commoner; what difference did that make to me? And Arvani have a word specifically for this purpose, it's 'shav'.
Of course, when you /do/ get to know someone you hated, things either get more complex or you just end up hating them in entirely new ways.
