How disappointing it is to see a blooded Princess of Grayson blood and Valardin ties behave so childishly. To attempt to ruin a common shopkeeper for speaking her mind before the gods? How petty and arrogant. I would expect better from the woman who would call herself a ruler of Thrax. Fortunately the rest of the Thrax nobility have, thus far, seemed to show some modicum of diplomacy and good sense.

House Velenosa has enjoyed a profitable alliance with House Thrax for generations. My own beloved cousin, Princess Jaenelle, was born of that family. One of my dearest friends, Princess Donella, is of the bloodline as well. I have both political and personal relationships within House Thrax and within the Mourning Isles in general. I have every reason to want to see House Thrax succeed and find a solid footing within the Compact.

Which is why I find it disheartening to hear that members of that fealty are not just criticizing the prayers of an Abandoned girl, but going so far as to seek to boycott her business as well. Why? Because she didn’t say the politically correct thing? She was not raised at Court to know how to gild her tongue so as not to hurt your feelings. Because she was touched by Mangata? I would think that those of the Mourning Isles would be more eager to connect with such a person such a short time after the defilement of the Shrine of Mangata and the loss of lives and ships in our very own harbor.

This boycott will cause little, if any, harm to Mistress Penrose’s business. She is talented and those who choose not buy from her will be quickly replaced by the many that are seeking her out. No, the harm that this boycott might do is against the Thrax fealty.

You see, whether you realize it or not, conversations are being had about Thrax’s place amongst the people of the Compact. Thoughts are being thought. Questions being asked. Let’s face it, given the actions of Prince Abbas, many have questioned whether there is a place for that kind of horror in the world we are all trying to create. Do you think that by ostracizing an Abandoned seamstress or even trying to imply that a -Palace Seraph- is playing false with the gods that those who are having these thoughts and conversations are viewing such actions favorably?

Nearly every House in the Compact has horrors that lurk in their history. Except perhaps for House Valardin, but I would contend that an excess of honor is a burden in and of itself. Most of us have blood staining our names, but I don’t think that excludes people from learning from their mistakes and striving to be better. I believe that House Thrax is capable of becoming more than blood-thirsty savages. I look at Princess Fatima and her recent words on this very subject as one who gives me hope that I’m not wrong about House Thrax, that the Mourning Isles and those that rule it have a place within the Compact.

It won’t be easy. Sometimes, it will mean making an apology that is never accepted by those hurt most. Sometimes, it will mean facing the reluctance and lack of trust that many have as they wait to see what House Thrax and those that are loyal to it choose to become in the coming years. The eyes of the Compact are on House Thrax and the Mourning Isles. Do you really want -this- to be the event associated with you?

A ceremony so pure in intent has left me in awe and reverence.

Politics played no role when I organized the gathering by the beach. Our Lady, Star of the Sea, our Goddess Mangata, struggled in our defense against the rising black tide which wreaked havoc and sorrow across the waters. We all share the responsibility towards rededication and acknowledge what our Goddess has done. And the people of Arx did not disappoint in embracing our Goddess and coming out to worship. My heart swelled in joy to see her worshippers participate in private or public, and dwell deeper in unity with a relationship with Her.

In the midst of the public prayers, I overhead a Mistress question if she has a right to pray because she did not know Her and assumed our Goddess would reject. Any who seek the light by praying to our Gods, from the most devout to someone who knows nothing about them, shall not be denied. And so I encouraged the Mistress as Mangata, ever loving and forgiving, welcomes any who wish to pray and learn more of Her.

Despite how impolitic the prayer, the point is this -- your prayers are a personal journey between you and the Goddess. No others were denied this opportunity to pray and nor should a Mistress whose intents were pure in her beginning relationship with Mangata.

And the most breathtaking moment occurred.

The Goddess arrived. You could feel her arrival in the unseasonable warm breezes, balmy with hints of salt and lavender. Her breeze swirled around Mistress Petal and played with her hair. A warm embrace in welcoming. And before our Goddess departed, she left us with the warm current of air as respite, to encourage us to continue in paying respects.

And as a servant of the Gods, I shall not cease in doing so. To those who were unable to attend and wish to participate, I encourage you. Open your hearts and speak truthfully to Mangata in your desire of rededication, reconciliation, or to learn more of Her.

~ Ever Faithful, Ever Your Servant.

Isn't death but a part of life? Maybe this is one of those things I'll learn not to say as I learn more about being a part of the Peerage, but death is a part of life. To a sellsword, we laugh when our friends die. Ask Shard. We've shared many a drink when my predecessor died due to an arrow wound to the balls went sour, or a lieutenant died because he tripped and ripped his hand off and it went awry. Celebrate the life, not the death. When I die, which, let's be fair, may well be soon, I want you all to laugh at the stupid shit I've done alive. Tears at my wake, but let's have them be tears of laughter, eh?

Yes, what Petal said at the ceremony about the deeds of some in Thrax may have been unpolitic to say, but I cannot help but note that what she said is not untrue. I can find little offense in the truth, though I judge none of my fealty who do take it. But this is life in the Thrax, or it was. The children I played with as a child were felled with axe, the same as saplings uprooted to make way for a new field of corn. No prayer, no amount of offense that I take, no raging or complaint will bring them back.

I understand the offense Princess Alarissa took - I think she wishes we were not those things. And she has had no hand in those deeds, and does not bear our name. I myself have been away from Thrax for a long time, but I am returned and I take that history as much as I embrace any other part of us. If we wish to stop being remembered for such things, we must not do such things. If we wish to do such things, then we must accept people will remember. Trying to have it both ways will end only in tears.

I'm disappointed to hear that a young commoner woman, a prodigal whose family bent the knee to the compact would be chastised for her prayers at a public religious ceremony. Regardless of their content and by members of Arvum's nobility.

The Thrax have a history and reputation of being bloody, brutal and ruthless warriors. Prince Abbas Thrax's actions in his life and more recently during the siege of Arx have reminded many of that ruthlessness, event as many others in House Thrax and their vassal houses have attempted to overcome it. Those people have my admiration for their endeavors. I hear that he's worked to make amends and he may have. Many seem to have forgiven him and that is their right.

But that does not mean that everyone in this city or within the Compact has. Commoners should not be chastised for expressing concerns over those things, even now that the actions are 'in the past' or 'amends' have been made. As an Oathlander, I believe to my bones that the nobility lives to serve the people. Petal Penrose should be praised for her devotion to the gods and to her courage in reminding everyone that these things are not so far in the distant past as others would have you believe.

BLESSED ARE YOU, OUR GODDESS MANGATA

It has been long since I sailed your waves, but I have lived two thirds of my live in your breeze
I have seen your impact in the sway of the tree tops, spend until hours at watch watching birds take flight on your breeze
You fill our sails that move our boats that fill our bellies. You give flight to our arrows that bring down those who threaten us.
You care for us, and we should care for you in return.
If ever we hurt you, it is because we are like children to you, not understanding the needs and wants of our parents.
Perhaps it is time we listened more, and tried to roar like wounded bears a little less.

Relationship Note on Petal

Mistress Petal has always been one of the finest seamstresses in Arx. Her skill is exemplary and she has always catered to my peculiar taste in attire, for that she has my gratitude. Although I was not personally there on the beach to witness what she said, I heard about it and I've read about it all evening. Some people are upset, rightfully so. Other people have taken what she said as part of the image the Compact has of House Thrax (whether it be true or not). Some would say it's nothing new. However, none can attest it as a falsehood.

The Warlord made a strategic decision that he felt was best based on the tactical assessment of the battlefield. He saved lives doing what he did, on both sides. I am not the only one who has heard Prince Abbas state that he regrets the decision he had to make. He knew that it would not win him any praise but he did what he thought was right. War is a terrible thing, and it leaves no hand unscathed by the scalding flames of pain, suffering, and loss. The longer any conflict drags on, the more lifeblood will be spilled.

A great Thraxian Warlord once said, "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting." We must consider the influences that everyone has had in their upbringing. We are not the same people, we do not wage war in the same manner. What we were taught is not the same as the rest of the Compact. It doesn't make us any less responsible for our actions, but when you take time to consider just /why/ someone might have made a choice that seemed so wrong...it should be clear that we are the sum of our experiences.

Remember that while we might condemn the outcome that occurred, the consequences might have been much the same. Those very same children that died of plague would have starved or died of exposure because their parents, mother and father would fight us to the death because their minds were not their own. While using plague as a weapon can be viewed as amoral, let's not fool ourselves into thinking that battle is glorious or morally just in any regard. Taking the live of another is taking the life of another. By blade, by decree, by political influence, by trade embargo, by the whispered words of a courtier, by the quill and inkwell, through espionage or any other manner direct or indirect. Sometimes doing the right thing is wrong.

I am not trying to dissuade any who choose to read this entry. People's feelings are valid because they belong to them. No one can tell us how we feel and no one should minimize someone else's feelings. Each of us is allowed to feel and to have our own opinions. Everyone is allowed to voice that opinion in an appropriate manner. The facts revolving around the judgement of the Gods, Thralldom, or past decisions made by the leadership of House Thrax are not easy things to address. Invariably people have been harmed by these incidents including Thraxians because contrary to popular belief. We are not all the same, we are a diverse people with many different cultures spread across the Isles. That no matter what happened in the past, I hope that we can all realize that sometimes good people made bad choices. It's never too late to learn from ones mistakes, it's never too late to make amends for the wrongs that have been done. It's not good enough to let bygones be bygones. We're better than that and those of us who do take responsibility for the things we've done have made steps to redeem themselves.

Mistress Petal should not be boycotted for her actions Thraxians. Mistress Petal should be embraced despite our differences. It may seem like a small thing, to disavow a seamstress. Most especially one not from the Isles, but it does not provide the Compact with the image that /we/ want them to have of House Thrax. We are a strong House and the opinions and words of others should have no bearing on our day to day lives. We are not petty and while I respect everyone's decision to take their business where they like. /I/ will continue giving Mistress Petal my business because words mean less to me than the intention and her intentions were pure. She asked forgiveness for our sins, and even if you don't feel like you have done anything that needs forgiving. The gesture itself is one of camaraderie and compassion. Whatever we choose to do as Thraxians, we should never condemn virtuous deeds. Not ever.

Relationship Note on Petal

She prayed for dead Abandoned babies, and then turned around and prayed for their murderers, as well as going out of her way to absolve those members of the House that have had no part in any of it. Apparently, this is a terrible insult? The Thrax creed is 'Tears in our wake, never at our wake'. Whose tears, exactly, do they think those are?

Oh, I'm sure the prayer wasn't comfortable, but it's about the nicest fucking version of it there ever could be. That's war. That's what happens when villages get raided. That's what happens when tribes get destroyed, even when it's a tribe that absolutely, in every way, without any possible argument from anyone decent, has it coming. And how often does that happen, I wonder?

Seems about right that the reaction here is that a bunch of them get mortally offended at some seamstress who seems physically incapable of raising her voice or showing a glimmer of temper for daring to ask their goddess to be good to them and maybe, possibly, if she has the time, to try to get them to stop killing people who don't need killing quite so much.

felt the wind of Mangata brushing against my cheek.

Princess Alarissa wrote me a letter saying she will boycott my work. She sent back all the dresses I made for her.

She said that she stands with house Thrax in this and that many of house Thrax will follow suit.

She said it is because of the prayer that I said to Mangata, but I felt her touch and I know that my prayer was not wrong.

I will keep praying to her. I have a faith that I never had before. She is in the mountains too. She is in the air. She cares for even the abandoned.

I found a toy boat today. ‘The Enrapturator’ it was called. A beautiful little thing, with thinnest of thread stretching out magnificent black sails over tiny lacquered wooden planks. I also found a Doll at the Murder. A much less refined beauty, with a deep scar on her cheek and a tongue sharp enough to have caused it. I’ve been thinking about this evening, and whether the two ‘toys’ I found were more similar than they were distinct. Once I brushed the dirt of the Lower Boroughs from the ship, I found the beauty of a glimmering purple figurehead at the head of the vessel. What would I find if I brushed the dirt from her, I wonder? Such a feat surely seems impossible.

It was a beautiful ceremony by the edge of the water. Some of my family was there - Jaenelle of course, and Donella. More Thrax than I expected, but two that I hoped would come of course didn't. I'll have to talk to them later, I expect. In any case, the ceremony was what I expected - a reaffirmation of the goodness of the Goddess who gives us calm seas, fair winds and gentle rain, and thanks given to her for the gifts she gives us. Time for personal reflection and prayer was offered as well there by the edge of the sea. I encouraged - and watched - as a former abandoned stepped forward, albeit fearfully, and made her first prayer and offering to Mangata.

And then a vassal of my family decided she needed to step forward and take umbrage for an honest prayer to the Goddess. She called into question whether this ceremony was a true one. She decided it was a mockery of the House of Thrax, an insult given. Oh, it was impolitic to be sure, but what was said was truthful. And not even that unkind, in that there were no recriminations, and there was also a moment to spare where it was said that not all of Thrax shared in these crimes.

And then I found myself at a ceremony of the Faith, forced to wonder if I was going to have to step in to stop religious persecution of an abandoned who has bent the knee and was attempting to pray to Mangata, by a noblewoman who claims to be a diplomat.

I am glad that I did not. I am even more glad that the Goddess herself stepped in and sent a visible sign of approval for what the formerly abandoned woman prayed. That She sent blessing to us all, including the woman who cried insult, in what I pray is gladness for the ritual we held. I hope that it helps. I am reminded that we are where we are because She needs help. And I will do what I can, as I promised Her, to give aid in this difficult and dangerous time.

Did another round of those hairpin/dagger pairs in the shop, though this may be the last for awhile. About half have sold, which is great! When time allows, might think up new themes - not sure yet. I've been told I can't sequester myself away too long or risk being forcibly removed from the forge. Ha!

Had an exceptionally fun brawling lesson and subsequent fight today with the Sword of Stonedeep. I truly do not get my ass to the training center enough for this sort of thing! While I genuinely enjoyed it, it reminded me that there are some areas that I need to get myself better acquainted with - namely defense. I'll have to put out word soon to see if anyone might be willing to teach a slightly older dog a few new tricks.

In other doings, commissions are light enough that I feel as though I can really weave weapons rather than just crank them out. Princess Katarina had placed an order that I loved working on a /great/ deal. I hope they will be well received. Still not sure I'll seek to learn how to forge diamondplate. It was a very big dream of mine, once upon a time. I know its greater benefit, but maybe in later years when my fighting is behind me.
