If the goddess is fine with what you said, I don't think you will need to worry about what a few offended nobles think. Your skill speaks for itself and the city recognizes it.

BLESSED ARE YOU, OUR GODDESS MANGATA

Tides rise, tides fall.
What seems chaotic in the moment, is always part of a bigger picture if one watches long enough.
Most often being on the receiving end of something unfortunate is more about being in the wrong place at the wrong time than being truly targeted.
Usually the surface of something tells you very little about its depths.

The ocean has taught me many lessons that have allowed me to survive.

I feel the need to comment on the recent goings-on, if only to make a point long enough to say how ridiculous it has all been.

Were the words of this Shav girl unwise to be put into public view? Yeah, probably. Would it be that she had noble blood it may as well have been something she could easily get away with, but without that protection it seems like criticism rains down like a fucking sledgehammer. I don't care for this woman, I've never met her, never planning on it and I'm willing to bet she's never seen the Isles for what they are in her entire life. Did she speak a word of lie? Technically, no. That's good enough for me to consider her prayer justified if she wanted to be so blunt.

To those who are offended, there's no reason to let the words of a commoner Shav with a good mind for crafting pretty threads bother someone of your stations. You're Princes, Dukes, Counts and all the other titles that go right down the fucking ladder. If it gets under your skin to the point you'll start getting naked and tossing your clothes on the floor, then fine. I won't judge because I really don't give a fuck for pretty dresses.

But honestly now, it's a prayer from someone who doesn't have the whole story and perhaps never will because her business and Thrax's hardly correlate. Don't get your britches in a bunch, drink a little and take a deep breath.

I will write in my whites once and once only, regarding this matter. Take from it what you will, how you will. The truth is known to those present at the lovely rite, and those who know me.

I am not of Thrax. I do not style myself the High Lady of Thrax, nor as Princess of Maelstrom. I am Princess Alarissa of Valardin, formerly of Grayson. My presence within Thrax can be explained in one sentence. I have entered a public period of requested courtship with the Prince of Maelstrom while negotiations for marriage are being started. I do not speak for Thrax. Never will I until our hands are bound and we have performed the rites.

Mistress Petal's words were heartfelt, true, and blessed in turn by Mangata herself. I was present, I felt it, I saw it.

I am ashamed by the words of strangers in their whites who pass judgement on someone who they do not know, who have never crossed path with and presume to put words and actions in my mouth, to which and where there have been none and cannot be attributed to myself. What was relayed between Mistress Petal and myself and my actions thereof as a result are purely my own, and with the full respect due to the seamstress in question. We disagree on something. It is as simple as that. I still respect Mistress Petal, her impeccable work and I hope all that get the chance to own what I have, will find the same joy in it that I did. I do not incite others to take the action that I have chosen to, but I know of others who have. I do not expect others to take the action that I have chosen to. But I know others who have.

I will not play the game of hiding in the archive, gossiping and sniping. That is not what my whites are for. Not what my journals are for.

I answer to the gods. I answer to myself. I answer to my High Lord if he feels my actions were indeed petty, disreputable, dishonourable and without merit. But I will not answer to those who who have decided that today is a good day to vilify because they felt like it when they woke up.

If I have offered offense, if I have I have offended, there are proscribed measures to deal with this, as the Legate Orazio wrote and I will answer those challenges if they are merited. But there are far more important things to take umbrage at and to deal with. Far more important things that we as a whole of the compact and residents of Arvum should be paying attention to.

These are my words on the matter. I consider it closed.

My lord Kennex wrote an inspirational journal regarding a sea-tale that has a very good bit of advice that is quite relevant today and I agree with his father's viewpoint to force fate to your favor. There is another sea-tale, very similar, that I'll share.

There were two twins, Adrian and Erasmus, who were famed in the southern Isles for their exploits as Thraxan reavers. The brothers competed against each other since they fought their way out of their mother's womb, and each of them tried to out do one another whenever they went a'reaving across the deeps. The spoils of course from this competition greatly enriched their people, but the competition between each brother was proving to be bittersweet.

One day, there was a great feast held by their liege, the scent of good food and the tropical floral perfume that only those who have been to the isles can speak about wafting in the air as the surf gently crashed on the beach. The gold brought back from the recent raids was being weighed, and Adrian's haul was greater than his brother's.

Adrian said to his brother, "All can see, I am the best sailor and captain, there is no crew better than mine! I bet my ship against my brother's in a race to see who can take the next ship!" This was met with a raucous cheer by the crew and people behind Adrian, while Erasmus was brooding in silence, the firelight flickering across his dark eyes as he stood up. "I accept my brother's wager. The first to take the next ship will be declared the best." With hardly a further word uttered, he gestured to his crew to leave and prepare for the next set of raids in the morning.

The next morning came, the two ships with their crews and captains were at the pier. Adrian's ship took off, his thralls whipped hard as they bent their backs to slice the ship across the water, leaving Erasmus in his wake still at the pier while his brother's ship hauled their sails up. There was no wind, and soon the brothers were separated. Adrian's watch on the crows nest peered across the horizon, but no ships yet were nearby to raid so Adrian continued to push his men to oar instead of having their sails up which would let others know he was soon to be on them. Hours stretched on, and nothing yet was seen until just after the sun was at high noon when a trading fleet was seen with one ship lagging behind its fellows. Adrian, upset and worried that his brother might find better fortune, beat and whipped his thralls to oar harder but the men were nearly dead from half a day's work already. The lookout on the crows nest called attention that his brother's sails were nearby, and Adrian took the whip in his own hand, beating not just his thralls but also his freemen to push them all to the oars to beat his brother to the catch. The wind pushed the ship of Erasmus' onwards and soon the ship was coming up alongside Adrian's. Adrian looked on in confusion which then turned to horror, as he saw his brother's crew were fresh and armed. Erasmus called the order to attack, and soon the ship of Adrian's was boarded. The freemen were spent, the thralls were dead-tired and none could put up a fight against the crew of Erasmus. Chaining his brother to the crew that he had just beaten, Erasmus said "As per the terms of our wager, you've lost your ship. A reaver takes what opportunity gives, he doesn't force to take what he doesn't have."

Adrian was a thrall after that and his debt sold to a northern Thraxan lord, and all his crew and thralls were taken by Erasmus which doubled the size of his holdings and began his fleet, of which tales exist of his further exploits.

Take what opportunity gives you, for fate cannot be forced into delivering you what you seek. Hubris in the eyes of gods and man will only bring you folly.

There was a story my father would tell me through letters when I was growing up. He would tell it to me when I was angry or upset with things not going my way.

The story was about a Kennex, many generations ago. He was a slightly distant cousin of the Marquis at the time, Raund. He fancied himself the greatest sailor, no one knew more about ships than him, of the opinion that he had the best control of his men, his rowers, his sails. Others often told him that that wasn't possible, one could not be the master of his sails. His sails were at the mercy of the winds, his ship was at the mercy of the sea. However, he thought this preposterous.

To prove just how correct he was, Raund took his best ship out, claiming he was going to sail out to Tssau Island which was two days sail from Stormward. He challenged another sailor to race him. Begrudgingly the challenged accepted.

When the race began, the challenged simply unfurled his sails and allowed the wind to carry his ship, there wasn't much wind that day. Raund, relied on his rowers, the best rowers to ever crank the oar. He was quick to take a massive lead, pushing ahead with ease. However, as the hours stretched on, the man allowing the winds to carry him, was gaining on Raund.

Raund was outraged, he cracked his whip, demanded his men rowed harder, faster, but the rowers were getting tired. Raund's ship could gain distance, gain speed, but still the sails would push his opponent further. Soon, Raund continued to push his men harder, panicking that he could be beaten after all his boasting. His opponent was now well ahead of him, the easy winds carrying him at almost a walking pace. Raund did not let up, the whip cracked harder, the barking grew harsher. Raund pushed his men so hard they died sitting with the oars in their hands. Needless to say, Raund did not win that race, in fact, he was never seen again.

My father enjoyed this story, while most think this story's moral is to not push your men past reasonable limits, he felt that it was a cautionary tale of attempting to force things in one's favor.

Raund tried to force the sea, and his men to carry him to victory. His opponent simply allowed the wind to take him at it's own pace. The man who believed the wind and sea knew what it wanted ended up winning the race.

You will never be able to force the wind and sea to your whim. She won't allow it out of spite.

I thought this story held some relevance lately.

I don't want to write opinions that put down one and lift another. All life is precious to the gods. That said, I will recommend Penrose's shop to people, as she made one of my favorite tunic designs I still wear to date. The silks are something every Lycene should at least take a look at. That said, I've been working on redesigning my own shop and planning to hire someone as an apprentice. I feel that it's time to do what I do best. Craft. I find it has always made me feel better when I'm feeling my most pensive. Through prayer, I feel that returning to my craft more is the right thing to do. For weapons, Dame Ida and Mistress Hana are the best. The Lower Leathers has some of the best leathers in town. And if you want figurines, the mystery of the Magpie is always the place to go. Crafters Unite! Stand together! The economy thrives, and we will ensure it!

To the Faithful Reader:

No one can, nor should, force anyone to buy what they do not wish to buy. If certain people wish to deprive themselves of Mistress Petal's high quality work, then that is their decision. Personally, I have greatly enjoyed what I have purchased from her, and will have to ask her for more in the future - although, if we're honest, the Faith robes do not support a great deal of variation.

That said, it is worth noting that we kneel in worship to a Pantheon of gods, not one alone. To worship Mangata is good; the mother of sea and sky has blessed us greatly, and none more than Thrax. That should be honored. But we cannot forget the rest of the gods - the Sentinel looks upon our actions for justice and truth. Gild cries out in joy when we show gentleness, generosity, and all the values of civilization over barbarity. Limerance smiles when we love, and pays close attention to the promises we make and how we keep them. Vellichor's wisdom and Gloria's unshakable honor should guide us in all we do and say.

To punish someone for speaking truth, particularly someone so much further beneath a royal house, does not meet the standards of any of the gods. If one takes offense at something someone has said, the proper way to address it - if you're going to acknowledge a single Prodigal tailor's words as harmful to a Great House - would be to make an honorable challenge. Otherwise, a little charity and grace can go a long way to convincing others that charity and grace should be extended, in turn.

BLESSED ARE YOU, OUR GODDESS MANGATA

In the breath her of wind
On the rising ocean tide
Soothing storm, we find
Life, the parched, drink
Brandywine soaks in joy
She saves from the brink
Bathing those submerged
Soothed in water’s waves
So sunken souls emerge
She glides over the kelp
nurtures crabs and men
The goddess is our help
Please forgive the lost
who fallen on their way
She gets those tossed
to their watery graves.
Bathing all submerged
Soothed in water’s waves
In the breath of her wind
On the rising ocean tide
soothing storm, we find
Life, the parched, drink

The faith of those in the Oathlands is strong, and well known. Even, at times, mocked by others. But I feel that when one of the Gods speaks or leaves us a sign, it behooves us to listen.

Whatever Mistress Penrose may have said, and however she may have said it, the Goddess Mangata did not take offense; she gave the woman a benediction.

Emotions run high right now, and understandably so. Let us all pray over the right thing to do. What would the Sentinel have us do. How would Gloria demand that we act? Honor tells me that forgiveness for those who speak truth, even undiplomatically espoused, is the chivalrous course of action. Especially when it would seem that Mangata's own actions have made her wished clear.

I don't know too much about Mangata. Usually when I think about Mangata it's not a good thing as it means there is weather, and I can't say I much care for weather. I've been on boats once or twice, but you really don't want weather when you are on a boat, the way I see it. The less weather, the better.

But then I suppose I do like drinking, even water if it's clean, and so there's that. I was at the ceremony for Mangata. I didn't have anything to say, I was just curious and wanted to learn more about the gods and such, but I am glad I didn't say a thing, not that I would have said anything that's likely to ruffle any feathers but you never know. They were serving mead and whiskey, and I'd already had some wine before I got to the beach and it all adds up to loose tongues, that's what.

Mistress Petal made my wedding gown. It's a lovely piece in deep green seasilk, and the hooded cloak she made to match is both charming and warm, perfect for how cold the weather has been lately.

Honestly I do believe she has made a good deal of my wardrobe, but the gown a lady marries in does tend to stick in her memory.

In the eyes of the gods, we are all human souls. At our core, beneath all the trappings, there is no fundamental difference between us, woven as we are with the same stuff, by the same hand, from the same source.

In one life you may be born a Princess. In the next you may be born a seamstress. In another, you may be born a child cut down far, far too young in the brutality of war.

All prayers are welcome. All life is precious. All faith is golden. Let no one who seeks the comfort of the gods be denied.

The Sentinel sees all and knows righteousness.
