Relationship Note on Roland

I've decided this man is a good person to have on missions in the field. He looks all flashy, smooth talking Bringers like he's something you do, and I come up behind and stab the bastards in the back.

Yes. yes, I like this plan.

Relationship Note on Eleyna

Probably the most elegant writer, she requests things of me that are ... impossible to refuse, with the way she presents them.

Mesmerizing. That's what she is. Gracious. Polite to the point of ...

She makes 'please' and 'thank you' look like swear words, with the grace she lends to her own requests and gratitudes.

Really. How do you describe cold moonbeams lit by firelight? You can't.

Recent news back from the Salt has me troubled. Good men and wasted lives. I pray the Gods deliver us to the day we may blood those who seek to devour our existence.

You will not find me groveling before a Throne of Bones begging for help or information.

Not because I don't believe it should not be done. More because I'm inept at such things.

The fact that they did not show up in a ship rather than by land does bode well though. I've heard if you throw them in water they float.

A Report of Activities on Horseback In The Northern Woods
by Sir Roland Bergere
assisted by Scribe Hubert (who is very patient)

In the performance of my duties as a protector of the interests of House Valardin, I have ventured forth with some hearty and brave individuals in search of information regarding the movements of the enemy. The expedition was led by the Royal Stablemaster, Master Tristan, and also included Lord Pietro, Princess Serafine, Prince Tristram, and myself. I must say it was somewhat confusing to have both Prince Tristram and Master Tristan in the same group, but I decided that calling the prince 'my lord' was sufficient to address the matter.

We rode for some hours, finally coming across the trail of a large number of enemy forces, moving in small groups from the north-east toward the south-west, seemingly in the direction of the holdings of the western Crownlands. Upon continuing to follow the trail, we were intercepted by a Member of the Enemy.

This individual was astonishing and awful to behold; he wore rags, stood some seven feet tall, and was all over of a ghastly pale complexion. He spoke in a flat, affectless expression (sic 'creepy booming impression transcribed' -Hubert) and upon inquiring if I wished to join their hellish campaign, was informed in the negative, at which point he declared me an obstacle and attacked.

My bold allies, however, had secreted themselves in the woods nearby, and upon the creature's attack laid forth with sword and bow, utterly destroying him. The Enemy was accompanied by some ten of the Abandoned, somehow strangely altered, and of similar low affect; when the Enemy fell, they seemed to go into something of a frenzy, and lay into us, fortunately to be felled themselves with only minor injury to myself and some wounds to Princess Serafine, which I tended to the best of my limited ability.

In conclusion, the Enemy draws away from Arx, but approaches the strongholds of the West, and therefor should be considered Very Fucking Dangerous.

It has been something of a busy time of late, despite my resignation from Voice of Grayson having freed up a great deal of my time. In between the particular madness of marriage negotiations, I have been continuing my inquiries into members of the group which I am currently researching. It’s entailed a fair amount of tromping around the city, and I’m very grateful for the company of my Champion, Buchanan. I think he expected a much more sedate post when he accepted my offer of employment, as I’m not sure many nobles walk around quite as much as I, but surely it must be improving to his constitution.

I am terribly grateful that those I care about are returned to the city, whole and healthy, despite the dangers that wait beyond the city walls. I pray that they will remain safe - but I also pray for the defeat of our enemies, and I know that such wishes are often opposed to one another. Victory and safety so rarely go hand-in-hand.

Leave it to Sal to get me kitted out after my last trip took my leather for a shredding. And sheared winds, does this leather fit me. Guess this is just going to chalk another one up to the fact that yet again, I find myself owing the boss man.

It's a hole I figure I'm never going to dig myself out of. Then again, with a friend like him, that's not all bad.

Still getting used all this tit's up news about the city in the years I've been away. Part of me thinks I should've stayed in Lycene, but then again, seeing the family was good. Ma still makes those damn pastries I'm pretty certain I'll get fat off of if I don't stay away enough.

Good times, all around, and with any luck, I'll find myself more work.

Relationship Note on Niamh

I honestly did not see this coming. Lady Niamh offered me a position as a deputy minister under her in Agriculture; I think better to access Petrichor's grace and wisdom and seek popular support for it, perhaps.

I'm seeking permission of my own from my own house before I accept. It's a great honor.

Relationship Note on Calypso

There is a reason I am the Redrawn they don't think twice about when vanishing into the snows and wilds - I was never made for courtly graces. That, and things go a touch more smoothly when I am not around.

I have your back even if you do not see me. Call it a trick of my trade?

You are always welcome, whiskey or not. There are a dwindling few I still trust and I am glad to have you among them.

Relationship Note on Luca

Sometimes you have that one relative that drives you crazy, that you thoroughly enjoy tweaking as often as possible, mischief, social upsets, public displays of affection you -know- they will hate you for later.

And then there's Luca. The lookout when you go and dump a decapitated head into your sister's bed, the aforementioned relative you love to tease.

Luca, you are brave and daring and I appreciate your assistance in my endeavors to keep my sister humble.

I owe you a round at your favorite venue.

Princess Eleyna, she is not a woman I was entirely happy to see again and our reunion one that threatened to turn frosty, though it turned out pleasant enough and quiet informative. Her cousin Prince Luca certainly seems formidable if altogether less sure in battlefields social rather than martial. Somebody has invested a great deal in his outfitting for that matter.

Another set of ex-in-laws have arrived to Arx.

I'm still not sure which of the Gods I've angered recently, but I'm considering blowing through my allowance to make some offerings of atonement. Maybe the first offering should be to Gild since I ran into Duke Cristoph at the bank.

If I don't get you a wedding present, Esera, this would be why.

Relationship Note on Asger

If ever there was a man to embody the wilds of the Northlands, he is it. Loud and cheerful, raucous and rowdy and even a bit ribald, his love of whiskey (or liquor of all sorts really) is practically legend.

He has quickly become the dearest of friends and my favored drinking companion.

Hurrah for vacations!

Even when taken within the city, its still enjoyable to immerse oneself within another area's culture by visiting their Ward. It also helps if you have friends within that Ward that will help squire you about and show you the best places.

I am still reachable by messenger and appointment, but for the next few days I will be enjoying some leisure time.

Relationship Note on Darren

Often times I feel as though this man has stolen a portion of my brain and is funneling it through his mouth. He asks the questions I think and shares the ideas that I concoct as well.

We will either kill each other in a fit of 'stop copying me'... or we'll be the best of friends. I'm rather hoping for the latter, though the former would make one HELL of an amusing story.

Hindsight is a luxury. There is little point in dwelling on what was, or what could have been. Balancing not repeating the mistakes of the past, with boldly moving forward? Easier said than done.

People change-- even the ones who try not to. It is better to invest that faith in yourself than set expectations of others to be met with utter disappointment.

I feel like my elk trampled me, dancing a little jig. Before that wasn't too bad, though, and I highly recommend Nightgold whiskey to anyone and everyone. That said...

I've had my first taste of what it's like to make hard decisions. I can't say that I enjoyed it all that much. But we couldn't have saved her; by the time we heard that scream, it was already too far, too late. Perhaps one or two of us might have returned if we had charged in, but I doubt it. There is still mutation going on in those woods, and an animal cunning as well as an inability to feel pain makes our foes considerably more dangerous than mere humans. I agreed to act as guide, and that made their lives my responsibility. I would not - could not - throw them away.

Even more than the warriors, we will need our scholars, our shamans, for the days to come, because when the fighting is done, we'll need to put the world to rights.

Something needs to be done about the tribesmen, yes. But only with those equipped properly to deal with them.

And if I keep repeating all this to myself, will it make me feel any better about having made the right decision?

It's so refreshing to get *good* news, for a change. I owe Lady Niamh a debt for that.
