Took a long walk in the rain the other day. It was good to be out in the open air, to talk about private things and not-so-private things, smell the woods, the earth. I do it often enough on my own, but it's good with company. Maybe I can convince Mother to come with me next time? Rumor has it she even owns a pair of leather boots.

I got a habit of going back to the Tragedy. Don't talk much about it I s'pose but it's something I do because I wanna give those kids a fighting chance to do something good someday. So I picked up a few of them and we went to the park to get some play time in. Was bringing them back in time for supper when I busted in on the Legate playing games with a bunch of other kids.
I sure wasn't expecting that. (S'pose all the people standing around looking like big shiny brutes shoulda told me something was up, but we always got knights visiting us off and on when I was there, so I didn't really think much of it.) Dunno that I've felt quite that nervous meeting anyone before in my life! I mean, I go there a lot, but that's the first time that's ever happened. Took me by total surprise!
He's sure not what I expected. The kids liked him, so that's gotta say something good right? And, well, I gotta admit, he made me feel like I was interesting. Definitely wasn't expecting that!
Can't wait to tell Uncle Cal (and yeah Dame Thena, he's my uncle. I adopted him! No laughing this time!)

Fall is always a special time of the year, I've found. Personally, there is something to relish in the rolling clouds that balance perfectly the heat of summer and cold of winter. Professionally, it brings a rich selection of fall crops that are more difficult to work with, yet are all the more rewarding in finding the right mixture of ingredients to create delightful drinks.

Relationship Note on Austen
It's no good trying to announce my presence, sometimes I sneak up on people, and near scared this gentleman out of his skin. Luckily, he let me apologize by way of conversation, companionship, and food (and chocolate). I'm happy to finally meet Ida's brother beyond the original run-in, and he has depths to him many wouldn't see. It feels a bit like my family has grown, and that's not a bad feeling at all.

Meeting Verity made me realize something. After the auction is done and dusted with, I have to make a new outfit for myself sometime. I create seasilk finery for others and I wear drab wool and linen. It does not say much for my work, unfortunately. Even though I think my work is very good.

Relationship Note on Coraline
Though we only just met, Princess Coraline never ceases to amaze me. Her capacity to empathize with the plight of those in need, then take it upon herself and do all in her power to try and improve the lives of others without hesitation are traits to be admired. Truly, she is a delight to be around and I am glad to have met her.
She is also currently working towards raising funds to invest in the newly liberated children Princess Alarissa Thrax has so generously freed from the bondages of thralldom. Coraline's plan is to see them properly cared for and given a chance for successful futures in the Mourning Isles. To my fellow altruistic souls without a cause to invest in, I recommend seeking her out to see what you might do to help. Be it monetary contributions or perhaps using your influence to convince others to join in with aid of their own, she'd be more than happy for it.

Thick is the fog of hubris which coils itself around the hearts and minds, closing them from the gift of logic and knowledge that Vellichor desires to be shared so that the mistakes of the past can be learned from. But the coils wrap tight around their hearts and twice the hand is guided and choices made.
How dare mortals feel they can act with impunity against things which they cannot fathom, they know not even if the breath they take in now will be their last. As if they too were gods to strike out against the purpose and plan of all things.
Best you keep the evil you know than to create out of the void left by your choices a nightmare that you cannot fathom.
Vengeance is a storm that hits with fury and surprise, masking underneath a veil of peace.

Though I struggled against going, at first, the Sailor's Ball was a wonderful thing. My first outing since having returned to Arx, not so long ago. The games were fun to watch, the quality of the conversation was worth a whole conversation unto itself, and the company I kept was by and far the best in the room. If the other gatherings in this city have as much character as this one did, I may actually end up being far more social than I'd ever intended. Time will tell.

The shop continues to fare well enough. I am selling enough to pay the rent on time, for which I am grateful. I had some concerns about setting up a shop, but I am more confident in my ability now. It's good to know I am not the only person in Arx to require a left-handed quill.
Milton is proving a deft assistant; I've set him to help another Scholar with some research.
The other night I attended a gathering at the Black Hall of House Redrain and listened various experienced warriors tell their tales. It is sobering to think of all those whose lives have been lost in our defense. I am grateful to those who bear arms to protect citizens such as myself. The Knights accompanying the Scholars on our journeys for the archival project managed to teach me the basics of wielding a small blade, but I am really not good at it.

I have been blessed with many fine customers within the city of Arx, but the Princess Alarissa is one whose dogged investment in collecting as much of my alcohol as possible goes above and beyond. It isn't just this determination she shows in the collection of drink, but also in applying her will to projects that will benefit her lands, and in this? I think we have a mutual opportunity for partnership.
