They can cut like the sharpest blade, lift you up when you are sinking to your lowest, make you smile, and make you laugh. They can give you hope and they can take it away. They can make your heart melt with love and make it quicken with desire. They can fill you with such pain you are sure you are dying.

Words are powerful.

How we use them can be even more so. Especially if we are not careful to use them how we mean to.

Be careful with your use of words, with your delivery of them. They can help you reach your loftiest goals... or they can be your biggest regret.

Relationship Note on Venturo

Seeing as it's my sense being called into question on the whites, I'm going to put it here in writing:

If I have a care for a person and I'm to see that person well and soundly sloshed for the first time, may the gods melt my eyeballs if I give them cider to do it.

I'm hurt to the bottom of my mercenary _soul_ right now.

The Tournament of Roses is once again underway - and once again, I find myself able neither to attend nor to sponsor a participant. There had been hopes of managing the latter, this year, but timing is once again against us: the winds are unfavourable, and our responsibilities ensure that we are kept busy on Esterhold. Maybe one day our champions will have the chance to stand alongside friends and allies before a cheering crowd in the capitol of the Compact. I very much hope so.

Another job completed, oh, do I love the sound of coin trading hands? I missed the tournament. But hopefully by the time the next one swings around, I will be able to join the fray properly.

True to form, I did not win any tilts at the joust!

But I did enjoy watching many talented riders. I think I may have picked up a trick or two that may aid me next time, and for that I thank them.

The jousts were amazing! I'm so glad I finally went. It was an honor to compete, and I can already see ways to improve before next year's bout.

I like to tell myself that this is all going well. When I manage to believe it, I get a pleasant dose of contentment and when I don’t, I at least get to have that quick jolt of laughter.

I went with Rukhnis to Lord Martino's lessons in ballroom dancing. After having the honor of dancing with Princess Reese some time ago, I practiced some in the Bard's College with a few of that troupe whom I could convince to swear to secrecy. Still, I am hardly a confident dancer, and was surprised and happy to find Lord Martino's instructions accessible, yet challenging. It was also an exquisite pleasure to hear the transporting music of our most recent Mockingbird Evaristo.

I was most impressed with the graceful footwork of the new Duchess of House Ashford, Lady Lisebet. Though in Stormwall I spent most of my time in military camps, I have visited enough ballrooms to have witnessed skilled dancers take pleasure in upstaging and embarrassing their partners. Such is not the case with Duchess Lisebet. Though her movements flowed with artistry and beauty, she perfectly matched the steps of her partners. I overheard her say that she is "decorative." Alas, My Lady, I must disagree. The sort of beauty Duchess Lisebet makes appear so effortless is a source of power at least equal to any sword or army. While one might succumb to superior force, one lives to serve beauty and grace, and finds happiness in doing so.

For a moment, I was certain I was responsible for injuring Lady Kaia Bisland, who had generously agreed to dance with me. She was obligated to leave the dance floor with a twisted ankle, and suggested that Lady Olivia might take her place. While I now suspect Lady Kaia's ankle may have had more to do with an ingenious design than my poor skill in dancing, I hold no grudge. Instead I offer thanks to Jayus that Lady Kaia's ankle seems fine, and for having the opportunity to dance with the talented physician and apothecary of House Ashford.

Guild Mistress, I thought I'd just point out that *cider isn't necessarily better for the boy. As you've seen from several of my samples, cider can pack more of a punch than an ale might... I do hope you clarified that it was of the non-alcoholic variety!

There amongst the dead, foretold and forlorn,
The sun and moon walked, radiant and worn.
Eleven they brought, and eleven they bestow,
Blooms of ivory, crimson, amethyst and coal.

Third place for the joust, though I share that particular honour with Prince Fecundo Valardin!

Quite an event, and my compliments to the final victor as well as the other participants. My compliments also to the peerless Princess Berenice Velenosa, for handling it all so deftly.

I shall try to be a spectator in the coming Melee, if duties allow.

Made it to the semi-finals in the Tournament Joust. I really need to spend more time in the riding gauntlet on the Valardin grounds. The last ride was a bit sloppy.

A most wonderful and splendid event!
Lord Martino Malvici is an amazing dancing instructor.

I made a new friend, Lord Dion Navegant, he was gracious enough to accompany me to the lesson and serve as my dance partner. We did quite well!

I certainly learned a few things about performance (both dancing and acting).
It certainly came in handy when pulling out a last minute matchmaking stunt for my bestie.~

When dancing with Lord Rysen Crovane, I "accidentally twisted" my ankle...and well he had /absolutely no choice/ than to dance with, my dear best friend, the Lady Olivia Ashford. Oh no~ *giggles*

Overall, it was an amazing event! I'm looking forward to more of them.~

We keep a modest stable here at our home within the capital. When I came here a few years ago, I knew that eventually I would want a horse to replace the one I retired and left in Ostria - sad as that made me. There are a few geldings in our possession here that are roughly two years old, and more than suitable for my needs. I only need choose the one that I like best. A task easier said than done.

Ignore the knuckleheads, my friend. You who have given so much to so many have no need of their ignorance. I'd be far more shocked if they said something accurate! This comes as no surprise, much as the unworthy normally does.

Eight silver knights and sixty-two copper bits.

It's a number that has always stuck out for me, and it's what I have laying across my desk as I write this. It seemed like enough back then, but it looks so small now. Money leftover after a night drinking, not much for Tor prices - enough to get me two or three meals at a decent tavern - but out in the country, it lasted me a while longer. It wasn't until we were gone for two weeks or so that we started realizing we were out of money, and that we needed to fight. We changed one of the knights for bits at the merchants before hitting the tavern, to make the bag louder. Stefano went and fought - he held the bag and shook it, claiming it was all silver, to make the bet. He won that fight, of course. Back then, he was better than I was, and I was still pretty good.

A hundred and seven silver. The largest fortune I had ever owned. We splurged on it for a month afterwards, drinking everything we could and eating until we were sick.

Living in Arx, it can be hard to remember just how expensive it is to be here, particularly for those of us who have found ourselves in a point where it's not much of an issue anymore. But I remember what it's like to be out, to be making bets of a few silver here and there on a fight, to be happy when I managed to get ten in a night of singing when I was near the cities. Here, you can spend thousands of silver on a cake and no one will bat an eye. You can spend hundreds of thousands on a dress and it might not seem to make a difference. And that spending is good - that money goes out to the merchants who keep our economy running, and I have no idea how they do what they do with it but our life is definitely the better for it. I never did ask Rook how he pulled the tricks he did when he lived in Whisper House - I probably should have.

There are plenty of places in the world where, when the markets clear at the end of harvest season, a farmer will have made three hundred, four hundred silver out of everything they've done over the course of that year. Maintaining their home, replacing their equipment and mending their clothing accounts for a good portion of that money. Feeding their family is usually the rest. Maybe, if they're lucky, they manage to put some away to help their children get a start in life if they aren't just going to be continuing the farm.

It's a little better if you learn a trade - if you manage to get lucky and get someone to teach you how to fight, are able to put on a good show, you can do well for yourself.

It wasn't until Arx that I started to have to start counting my money in gold, and then even the rare platinum piece now and then.

And yet, even in this city of fabulous wealth, people starve. It's all too common in the Lowers, though the efforts of the soup kitchens have put a big dent in the number of people who actually die. What would last you ages out in the country is gone in days here, and the sense of scope begins to fade. We forget how different our life is. We forget how it might look to those on the outside.

It's always good to keep this in mind when writing our White journals. For each of us who have done well, there are thousands who struggle.

This morn Lady Kaia indulged my need for an archery competition.

Thank you for the fun. I needed it more than words can express.

I look forward to our next challenge to be named among the best archers in the compact.
