I think I upset Lady Peri. She came to see the newest piece but it was sold already. I offered to show her the sketches and perhaps something in the same vein. A discussion of cost brought about that pockets were tighter and I offered to make one of silver, with sapphires of varying shades.

From there, the conversation went downhill if you call it a conversation. Fractures. I assured her that none of my gems fracture. Not in the least. I make very sure when cutting them to ensure that no flaw that would lead to such remains.

I don't know. I have offended her. Gems are verboten? But she came in a shop that they abide and are bountiful. Oh I'm so confused. Emeralds too?

Fair certain that I'm now on some list of those to whom not to sell Seliki pearls to after that.

Relationship Note on Olivia

For friends, one sometimes does the strangest things as favours and one of these recent favours was for the Lady Olivia Ashford.

See, the Lady Olivia recently asked me as well as several others to help her with the distribution and promotion of gourd seeds from a particular plant. The plant was one that the Lady Olivia has worked on the be resistant to some blights that affects others. That was not as thirsty as some and, since she was the expert on such - it seemed right to help.

So the favour had to come in the form of promoting this crop for me. This is where it becomes strange, to travel to Southport, to Ashford and to other parts of Arvum where gourds are regularly seen - and explain this to the good Thralls, Prodigals and common people. Fortunately the crop was adaptable and the pitch was easy at some parts. To boil it down:

Gourd is good, gourd is great. Gourd will feed you, when there you are in a state.

It is an emergency crop ultimately and, in the quest to stave of famines, it will be invaluable for years to come.

It has distressed me deeply to see the Magister of the Court so publicly misattribute, in part, the ancient and holy rite of trial by combat to the Sentinel. While the rite has ever tread upon the threshold of the Silent Watcher's domain, it originated wholly exclusively of the efforts of the Sentinel's disciples.

The trial by combat was and remains the sole province of the Lady Gloria, in which truth may be unveiled in the light of honourable battle.

I urge those with interest to review the writings of Archscholar Py in his "Treatise on Truth and Falsehoods."

Relationship Note on Cufre

We have spoke in length through the messengers on your work, especially the new areas you range into with fine male jewelry, after seeing your sketches at the Fashion Show.

Now wearing the first piece, Cufre's work is truly not the start of a journey but already well honed.

Relationship Note on Stygia

I think there has been a misunderstanding.

When Ras was arrested, he immediately wrote me to ask me to fight for him for trial by combat. Before I answered I wanted to find out what was going on. It was difficult to get much information out of Ras at the moment so I wrote to friends in the Iron Guard. I was told that while Ras was locked up, that he was let out and everything should just move on at that point. No trial by combat, no nothing.

When I saw Ras, I gave him a lecture. I've known Ras since he couldn't even walk on his own. I told him that the Iron Guard told me it was dropped. Moving on. Believing that there would be no trial by combat I laid into Ras for losing his temper. I told him that asking a man to bleed for him in a trial by combat was serious. Ras is well aware of my martial prowess, and no one should feel as if they can act however they wish because they know they have a giant with a hammer in their corner. I told him I would take another scar for him, another twenty. But that he should keep in mind that throwing a fist because he's angry may mean another bears a scar for the rest of their lives. He shouldn't be reckless.

Champions can be very reckless. We choose to bleed for a great many causes, some serious, some very much not so. That is the job and one that I am obviously alright with. But I wanted Ras to learn from this, that perhaps it would cause him to reflect when he feels that rage the next time. His actions have consequences.

Apparently after this, Lord Alban insisted upon Ras being punished and so the trial by combat was scheduled. Wherein Ras elected to fight for himself. I demanded he let me fight for him, but he felt after the lecture I gave him, that he needed to fend for himself. It was never the lesson I was trying to teach him, but it's the one he took. I will admit that I tried to push on Lord Alessandro that I would fight for Ras even though I knew Ras at that point did not want me to. I feel badly for that, but I did not want Ras to fight, desperately. Lord Alessandro told me Ras did not want me to fight for him and that would be that and unfortunately nothing could be done unless I convinced Ras otherwise.

I would more than gladly bleed for little Ras. Ten times over. I was glad when Lady Brianna extended her help to him and was able to convince him through what I understand was a complicated negotiation that she would fight for him. However I would more importantly see that my young friend never lose his temper and get himself in a situation like this again.

All of it is a rather unfortunate situation and I do hope we are all able to move on promptly.

Relationship Note on Stygia

My friend. I don't even know if he's in the Champion guild. But he's one of the best people I've ever known. And he always sticks up for me.

I said... it would be easy for him to fight. He was just setting me straight. And he was right. I shouldn't take advantage of my friends, specially over something like soup and biscuits. Anyway, after he found out the trial by combat was actually gonna happen, he told me he was gonna beat the shit out of me so that I couldn't walk so that he'd go be my Champion, but I hid somewhere until he got over that idea.

He thinks I messed up cuz I get stupid mad over crap like this. But I don't think so. He doesn't get that part because he's always been a winner, right? I told you that. But I'm glad I didn't tell you his name because he doesn't deserve to be talked about like this. He's the freakin best of us.

How surprising it is that a member of the Peerage decided to overstep the scope of their privilege and ended up in a tavern brawl with a commoner.

If only the Iron Guard had ample coverage of the streets in that generally well populated area of the city. Hm.

Relationship Note on Ethan

I have prayed to the Sentinel that justice shall come down towards the Undrowned Sons for their repeated acts of violence against citizens of Arx. Their charter should be revoked. Their property and accounts should be seized. Their members should be investigated and prosecuted for any criminal activities they have participated in. Anyone enacting in business with this mercenary group should be put under scrutiny. Because the Undrowned Sons' actions are being funded, perhaps even by those we call ally.

I shall be working with my own lawyer to file a civil suit against the Undrowned Sons for damages in their most recent attack against House Blackshore during the Harvest Festival. I hope others join me in my efforts to petition the courts to take action against the Undrowned Sons.

If a champion, such as Lady Brianna Halfshav, firmly believes in the innocence of the defendant, there is no dishonor in taking up their cause and defending them in a trial by combat as long as the matter is not a capital offense. Nor should any of the champions that refused to take up Master Ras' cause be criticized for their refusal because clearly his attempts to convince them to take up their sword did not strike home. Just as Master Ras enacted his right to seek a champion. Lord Alban Farshaw can drop the charges if he has a change of heart. I take no issue with any of these actions.

Now you can argue the validity of the cause. I'm sure both sides have their opinions. However, no spurs should be thrown at the Champions Guild in this matter. It's there for this very reason and should readily be available to all citizens of Arx.

Relationship Note on Alban

I was not there at the inn that night. I can not speak to what led to the disagreement; however, I can speak to Lord Alban Farshaw's character. He served with me at the Battle of Stormwall. He fought well and was a credit to his house. He has served as a disciple, honoring Gloria with his actions. Never in the war camps in which we served together, did I ever see him treat anyone less than what they were because of the circumstances of their birth. Nor has he ever bullied anyone within my gaze to the point of violence. I doubt that this man would so radically change his character over a disagreement in an inn.

However, we can all be prone to lapses in judgement. Clearly Lord Alban has admitted in his whites where he might have errored. So I do hope that this matter is swiftly put to bed.

Don't hit nobles. I don't know or, honestly, particularly care about the details of what happened, or which person's story is closer to the truth, so I mean this in general. Don't hit nobles.

It's not that a lot of nobles don't deserve to get socked in the jaw. You could probably fill the Grand Cathedral to the roof with nobles that deserve a whole lot worse, let alone a few bruises. They might be very annoying. They might really, really be asking for it. It might be the most perfect justice in the entire world. It doesn't matter. Don't hit nobles. All of society will come down on you like a cartload of bricks for doing it. Hit something else instead; a wall, a tree, a barrel, whatever. If you're not so stupid about it that you break your own hand in the process, you'll just have some sore or bruised knuckles for a few days as a consequence, rather than, at best, a prosecution.

That's more or less the advice I was given just before my first time entering the city. It turned out to be very good advice, and I've somehow managed to follow it in the years since. I'm happy to pass it on. Don't hit nobles.

For all I find pushing envelopes and testing boundaries fun as a true-blue Velenosa, I cannot seem to get behind shrouding my person in the outfits of the lost heathens of our world. They cause damage to our crops and livestock, to our very lives. Exotic-ising and romanticizing such people is cruel to the men and women of the Compact who have laid down their souls, to those who have lost family. I cannot, in good conscious, condone that.

My little loves,

Memories are passed down in many ways, your father excels at letters, I prefer songs. There are dozens of other means if not more though, drawings, poems, clippings...

For you today, I leave thirteen thoughts on family.

1) Family is created by blood, held by the bonds of kinship, circumstances of birth.

2) Family is created by loyalty, by love, by shared common experience, it is a choice.

3) Family centers around the Matriarch, the woman who has seen the most of them raised, who has the most wisdom about love and loss and strength, who has earned their respect.

4) Family centers around the Patriarch, the man who has seen the most of them raised, who has the most wisdom about loss and strength and love, who has earned their respect.

5) Family centers around the eldest, They are the family's future, the to look to to know their hard work worth it.

6) Family centers around the youngest, for they must be loved and cared for and nurtured by all of the others.

7) Family centers most around the departed. It was they who set the tone for all that followed.

8) Family centers most on the generations yet to come, whose world we have not even begun to imagine.

9) Family is linked to place, without culture and history it could not be.

10) Family is independent of place, culture, or language. It is constant.

11) Family, being tied to emotions, is often fickle and inconstant

12) Family is where your parents eventually yield the ground of your thoughts to your spouse, and your spouse to your children.

13) Families can be crowded and lonely, heartbreaking and beautiful, all in the same moment.

At least once in my life I have sincerely believed in each of these thoughts. If there is a lesson in that, let it be that your view of the world will constantly be changing, even that it is expected to.

Love,

Your Mother

It is very exciting to finally find someone who can do a thing you never knew how to find a person to do. Maybe you always wanted a particular carving but the wood you wanted took special technique, or you wanted to know how to juggle knives and nobody who claimed to know how had all ten fingers. Then suddenly you hear the rumor you needed and find that person.

For me, it was a story. A tale I wanted to hear that I couldn't no matter how hard I listened. Now I'll be able to hear it. With some work, of course. Perhaps not with my own ears. I'm alright with that.

I hope it is a story I can do justice. I feel a responsibility to try.
