Relationship Note on Aleksei

Archlector Aleksei is trying to do the right thing. He wants to be a 'good guy'. But his zeal in following Skald's dogma has caused him to tread dangerously on dogma that I, as the Archlector of Gild, was duty sworn to protect. The unity of this compact is paramount to its survival. Nothing that Aleksei did was illegal, but it was done with ill-intent. He was told, by one of the highest authorities in Thrax what would happen if he followed his plan to remove Thralls in mass from the Mourning Isles. Not only did he do so, but he did so with the intent of punishing those that held those values strongest. He could have spread his ministrations, important as they are, out over a year, as suggested to him. Or he could have been more equitable, removing thralls equally from all houses. The reaction was both predictable, and devastating to Navegant economy. When one sets out to punish instead of help, however legal their action, it becomes immoral.

He backed out of his challenge, not because he wanted to spare me indignity, but because he refuses to admit any wrongdoing. He has repeatedly said that the money he paid for these thralls should account for any ills inflicted. But as the Archlector of Gild, I learned the limits of what money can do. Money does not throw nets. Money does not pick the harvest. Money does not console the heart when good men die.

I am no longer Archlector, and I have been instructed to read the dogma. So after this post, I will be silent. Unless of course, someone continues to mischaracterize what I have said when I held the august position that I did.

Arx is a wretched city, in which nobles easily grow too detached from the realities of their domains. Less so for the Graysons, perhaps, but among Islesmen, it is dangerous to be surrounded and encouraged by voices that do not understand our race. I take only regret in the accuracy of my last journal, for in the battles to come, the lost strength of Kennex will be missed, as will the resources we must now pour into stabilising the March.

Though he may deny it, this disaster is exactly what Aleksei Morgan has called for. He bade me once that to earn Skald's regard, I should free all my thralls and become one of his followers. Kennex did this.

Witness the disaster that comes of heeding folk who meddle in matters they do not understand. None can be liberated from the consequences of their choices, try as some might.

Might I float the shocking concept that helping Arx and helping Kennex are not mutually exclusive?

You all fix Kennex. I'll keep working on Arx. And if any of you want some advice, feel free to write!

While the nobles do their noble thing (nobody cares about my opinion on any of *that* mess) I'm going to write about my first week as DMoRPA!

So far I'm feeling pretty good about it. I met some Prodigals. I started piecing together ideas for some programs. I was going to work out the kinks with Saya and her shop, but Princess Lark sharked her as a protege before I could even put the proposal properly together. I'm going to call is a win anyway.

Besides, I have a sneaky suspicion there will be plenty of refugees and prodigals in the future to dip their toes in the water for the plan though. ( I can't imagine WHERE they'll be coming from)

Now I'm going to slink back to my workshop to lock myself in for the rest of the day before the post-sermon crowd rush the archives to unburden their souls to the scholars.

The help being offered to the Kennex seems a lot more focused on the now former thralls over the dire straights the march is in now. What of the people who are not former thralls and might have lost their only source of income. The mass freeing also took away the security being a thrall also granted some. While a good amount were war criminals.. What about the ones who decided to become a thrall to save their own lives? Our system keeps poverty, homelessness, and starvation down, after all. But it is 'slavery' of course. So, we must be in the wrong, right? This is why I always tell people to learn of our ways before passing judgement.

I go in deciding everyone is a shit person so, there is plenty of room for adjustments on my thoughts. I was pretty blunt with the Prince of Sanctum about expecting him to be one of the most judgmental of our ways. People should take a page from his book.

I get the sense I'm going to be incredibly busy over the next several months. That might fill some people with a sense of dread but I feel oddly energized.

My original promise of potential employment in the Crimson Blades for former Thralls is still open, and now that things are moving along, I'll be making good on that promise.

My heart breaks for what is transpiring in Stormward.

The proverb of "all things in their proper time and place" is no platitude. Too much change, too suddenly, is traumatic. It can even kill. Although things can be done to expedite the healing process, healing still takes time. Sometimes, too much medicine is as lethal as the ailment. Acclimation is required if the host is to survive. It is the stark and painful truth all healers must accept even as we strive to mend and save all we can.

I pray for and work towards a day where Thralldom will be abolished, aching in knowing that it will never be as soon as I wish. Alas, such often is the purview of change, working at pace that does not suit my impatience, yet urging us to be mindful of the care we give during such trying times.

What is done is done, though, and now we must stem the bleeding before Stormward entirely hemorrhages. The health of the entire Compact will be impacted by how we treat this grievous wound. I daresay that extends to all of humanity.

I will give what aid I am able, in comfort, in coin, and in the implementation of support systems with the Mercy chapters in Stormward, the Maelstrom, and any other holding that will welcome the former thralls. Those who wish me to coordinate with the respective Mother or Father Mercy of their holding's chapterhouses are urged to please contact me.

Furthermore, those former thralls with the interest to serve Our Lady of Change as a Mercy of Lagoma will be welcomed as a novitiate, here, in Arx, where they will undergo all the rigors and proper training to warrant wearing the mantle of a Mercy. Those who are willing and able to aid in the logistics of such a relocation are also urged to please contact me.

May the Gods bless and keep us all. May our inner light ever continue to shine.

Yours, in Faith and in service,
Princess Sophie Valardin, the Mother Mercy of Arx

I have been asked, repeatedly why I have not abolished thralldom, and what has transpired in the south is a good part of that. Instead I have chosen to foster in my vessels a compassion, encouraged them to see their thralls as their citizens, their vassals as much as any other member of the common folk is. I have chosen to see the separate groups of thralls - the Prodigals, the Debters and Criminals - each differently, and to treat them as such, giving Debters and Prodigals the opportunity to be improved by their service, to learn skills they would not have access to other wise, to be exposed to higher levels of culture than they might have other wise. In mine own home, at the end of their service these people often stay, they are paid, they are trusted, they are productive and they thrive.

And at the same time, that criminals, true criminals, murderers, pirates, violent men and thugs that their service is more punitive, they are not trusted in houses, they are laborers. These are the population that row ships, work mines and fields, they have earned their position, they owe compensation to their communities.

No situation is black and white. A rainbow of gray exists in almost all things.

Change is a scary thing. It's difficult, it's new, it means stepping outside the comfort of how things have always been. But there's a lot to learn from it to. Adapting, evolving. I've spoken of it before but I think it's plenty fucking relevant now. The hand of change can't be forced. It'll move at its own pace.

You can encourage it, you can nurture it, you can motivate it to speed along. Really, you should if you want to make a difference too. But ya' can't make it sit and heel on your command. I hope that something we can take from the lot of this shit is that there needs to be steps, planning, caution and most importantly patience.

Every little movement in a body of water is gonna alter the waves. Whether you're splashing like a motherfucker, going at an even pace, or just sitting still and being an obstacle for it to bypass. Swim well, the lot of you. We'll get through this yet.
