An evening not in the Stacks until the candles meet their end has made for a pleasant change.

Relationship Note on Briseis

When the Iron Guard checkpoints claim three hours of your day, when you're in a situation where if you don't get work you don't get paid, all for something that the real villains will avoid without any issues?

It's not about safety or security or stability. It's about persuading everyone that the Iron Guard and the Inquisition are doing something, while they get to push around commoners and lesser nobles in order to shore up their own egos. It has nothing to do with justice, just with making them look good to those who can't see through the posturing.

Crops planted in ill soil can make for spindly crops. What does survive, however, may grow much stronger and sweeter and, with a little bit of care and time, can often make a far better spirit, goods or wine.

I leave the house unadorned lately. It troubles me. But I suppose what needs to be done, needs to be done.

I feel like there is some sort of saying, "While in Lycene, do as the Lycene."

Or something.

But I cannot. Gah! I miss the Stacks. I think I'll hide there for a bit and read.

Relationship Note on Ann

There is something truly admirable about the calm grace that is so often displayed, or the steely fire within. I admire and look forward to growing and learning more of you as your protege. And, together, may we conquer whatever we set our hearts to!

Choices and outcomes. The former is a gift we've been given while the latter may often be decided by society. Some things are rather simple. If I choose to drink two bottles of whiskey, the outcome will be a dreadful tiredness and headache the next day. Few, especially in the Northlands, would judge that too harshly.

Other choices may have far greater implications. Consequences, even, and yet I see so many of us take those paths with hope that eventually the ends will justify the means. That there are greater goods which will come from those choices and the upset, perhaps even turmoil, we may cause is something we will have to shoulder as best we can. Not everything can be rebuilt again, but perhaps that's not such a bad thing. Maybe, we get the chance to build something better.

A Lullaby, for my children

Take care of your thoughts when you are alone
Take care of your words when you're not
Be kind to the people that you have outgrown
And remember the lessons they taught

Never say yes if you want to say no
Never speak ill of your friends
Do not doubt the things your heart truly knows
And when you fail, start over again

Honor your duty in oaths you must keep
Honor you and be true to your soul
Cherish your joy but do not fear grief
And walk bravely, my loves, in this world.

I understand, deeply, that the Iron Guard check points are, by and large, an enormous inconvenience. Dreadful, really, that we, as a people, have become so accustomed to the ease of life, that when something is implemented FOR OUR OWN PROTECTION, that even with the state of the world what it is, it is reviled because it is a so great and terribly inconsiderate of our schedules.

Too long have we been left to simply react to tragedy. To scramble to find our feet in a world that won't stop rocking beneath us. I applaud the Iron Guard in its attempt to ensure stability and safety for Arx in a time where there is so little to go around. I apologize to any who has had it hinder your daily life, or business, but know that it is actively trying to root out crime and insidious intent within the city. And for those who have noticed the benefit - thank you. Supporting the Iron Guard is important; those brave men and women are sweating and spending hours beneath the sun, in full armor. For the hour it might make your trip delay, they are sweltering for a multitude times that, performing their duties.

Justice will prevail, we all just sometimes have to sacrifice a little for it.

Thoughts of... becoming a father....

I promised in front of a great crowd up on the day of my marriage that I would obtain a noble heir ... and I have done as such. Through the facilitations of Grayson's Minster of Loyalty, all the orphaned children from Mapleford will all find succor in new homes. Lady Rynn and Lord Ishen are two such youngsters whom with House Amadeo is honored to offer a home too, one that will be filled with such opportunities and a grand future. Should any of the particulars spike your curiosity dear readers, you might seek either my husband or myself out for quiet conference.

That stated, I'm quite unsure of what to make of myself becoming a father. For two long years we sought the right match and while we heard promises and eagerness to aid us, due to circumstances out of anyone's control no suitable resolution was found. So I had a few years, to come around to the notion of being a father. A dad. Yet it still hits me quite suddenly that now I am one. I'm certain the children are quite as overwhelmed by all that's transpired as much as I am, that we are.

Though I will say this, in ink, in the Whites... I will promise to guide these children into their futures and protect them at all costs. They've been through too much already and now they are mine to shield from the evils of this world, but I promise too that I will prepare them for it. I will make them ready to stand a beacon of hope, a blade of salvation, and a shield of glory to the people which will one day look to them as leaders.

No longer are we orphans...

... we are family.

I had a trickle of customers come into my shop yesterday complaining of a headache and rash that started creeping along their arms and legs. Quickly, they all became patients as I tried my best to diagnose the issue but the manner of the rashes spread seemed unusual for a common irritation. One poor soul had it on his buttocks and trying to get him to sit for longer than a minute without wiggling himself in the chair was a difficulty.

I discovered that they all had one thing in common: purchasing a "beauty" cream to help with firming loose skin. The poor dears were sold something rotten and I discovered the contents to hold stinging nettle and ragweed. I supplied them all with a cooling salve and asked them to stop immediate use of the purchased magical serum. I learned then that it was bought from a stall in the market proper and they all fell prey to false advertising. Upon making a report to the Iron Guard they were able to catch the scoundrel at a nifty checkpoint and stop him from entering the Lyceum Ward.

Can you imagine itchy, scratchy, irritable Velenosians all over the place? I shudder to think about it.

In Alsandair's quest for the perfect cocktail, he's made a few mistakes. Not many, mind you - he's the best manager and bar tender in the whole city of Arx.

But.

Last night, he made me a "smoker's cough". On a scale of 1 to 10 it was a war crime.

Maybe that's what the Iron Guard is looking for...

Everyone is making note of all the Iron Guard presence in the city center. I've been so cooped up at home I hadn't noticed, but now I am definitely going to make a point to go visit the markets... I could use a good frisking.

My leg is healing well enough. With a little determination I should be capable of sailing with Velenosa's fleet. It will slow me down of course but compared to the handicap presented by my weak lungs it is nothing really.

The Iron Guards over zealous behavior on the other hand is proving as irritating as I suspected. I have never liked to be touched by strangers and having to potentially submit to it every time I wish to go through the gates is untenable. Luckily I can't travel far without a carriage or palanquin anyway so the inconvenience of having to go around the city every time I wish to visit another district is considerably lessened. I am starting to think about hiring more guards. It is a sad day when you are more worried about meeting the Iron Guard you than you are the criminals.

I've now lost track of the amount of times I've tweaked my nose over the years. At least this time it was simply from an overeager trainee rather than someone with malicious intent. Never gets any easier to be glowering at oneself with a fresh crook in the nose, nor to sit up at night propped upright to avoid swallowing too much of my own blood.

It will ease, I know, but that doesn't make it any more pleasant in the here and now.

It's a wonder I can still breathe out of the damn thing at this point.

Open up your satchel, sir
And let us see within
What is it you have with you?
What wickedness, what sin?

Do you have correspondence, sir
That reads to us as treason?
Missives sent to prodigals?
You'd better have a reason

What is this smoky flower, sir
Something seems amiss
Hazy days are not allowed
And we'll be taking this

Why are you so worried, sir
We do only as we're told
And if you have stepped out of line
Then get back to the fold

What grounds for objection, sir
We could not be more clear:
If you were only innocent
You would not have to fear.
