It's still winter, but I find myself excited for spring. The first set of blooms. The rays of sun on our faces. Rabbits escaping.
In the meantime, someone told me a snow-appropriate joke. I would like to share it with you, Scholar. Please do not hold me responsible for other people's humour.
Where do snowmen love to dance?
At a snowball.

Off on an explorer trek again, running supplies to a group exploring some ruins. I miss my bed at home on these expeditions. Seems my bedroll always has a root or rock or something annoyingly uncomfortable under it. At least it was not camping in the mud or on some narrow ledge or on bitter cold ice.

In the Saikland Greens traditions, the recommendations of Malvici to its vassals and by golly, in plain simple common sense, all Saikland Greens citizens have, since I became Baroness-regent, continued to be trained in at least the minimal ability of self defense. Frying pans, rolling pins, field harvest scythes, stock stall mucking rakes, children's sling shots, thrown rocks, wine bottle bludgeons, so much potential helps give people confidence that they are not helpless, they need not cower in the corner while the enemy to all of the compact threatens. They have games and fun contests to hone those skills. The ability to keep home and each other safe helps free up trained warriors and recruit more for the necessary answering of the Compact banners.

(Poorly drawn human teeth have been sketched in black ink along the edges of the page.)
I really ought to learn how to draw properly. What if I wanted to write a treatise on ailments of the teeth but could not illustrate it?
Disastrous.

The bowstring released. The arrow's in flight. May the winds be kind, or the coming storm favorably spiteful.

Pasquale seems to think delving into my dreams might be important but I think there is more to learn from history and continuing to study wars of the past and learning to be the best General I can be. I can't fathom anything practical gained from chasing mirages.

Each time I have the opportunity to visit a new venue, I am inspired by the kind of work I might show there. This city has such a variety of options and so many people interested in maintaining a cultural beat that I am moved to create and imagine more. May Jayus help keep this community strong.

It is nice to stoke the fires of my forge again. I have let it grow too cold for too long. With a few new commissions, I have an excuse to get my butt back to creating new things. Inspiration has tickled my thoughts again and I want to make all the things.

I have been spending most of my days away from the city and in what is now reforming into Artshall. The strength of our people never ceases to amaze me. I know I said I will start with the essentials first: the houses, the farms, the castle, but it has been difficult to ignore all that I felt I lost personally.
I took a walk toward what used to be the art district. Remenants of shops and pieces of marble were scattered all over. So I picked a few stones and arranged them in a corner. A cornerstone of where the shrine of Jayus stood. I prayed. I hardly ever do that anymore but I prayed. I felt better already.
Perhaps if I take a few workers to start work on the district, no one will notice. I will pay them from pocket. Sell a few things. I know it will make me feel better. Perhaps.

Being an autumn child, I've always loved the onset of winter with its crisp clear nights and the touch of frost in the air. It's when the season is in its oppressive latter stretch, dark, grey and miserable, that it's usually outstayed its welcome with me. Slush is a wretched thing. Wet and cold together makes a cruel misery to suffer.
My advice? Always have a dry pair of socks. The toes you save will thank you. Well, not literally, unless you have very unusual toes. Honestly, if you do have talking toes, I would guess having cold feet are the least of your troubles.
Kindly disregard the above. This was actually meant to be a serious note:
Work continues in Reveillon, and though we are few, progress continues apace. The pines tremble and the oak wakes. The owls call out in the night to their fellows, and the stag finds in the verdant hollows, a quiet place of repose. The wind rustling through the leaves whispers 'soon', and brings with it, the fresh scent of Spring renewal.
Praise Petrichor.

The final weeks of winter are always busy. I have begun making lists of the tasks that must be done at the gardens at Saving Grace, the College's grounds, and the sanctuary. Thankfully, there are apprentices and students aplenty to assist, but I have been considering hiring on someone to help me attend to the sanctuary. I love being out in the garden and tending the beds myself! However, there are always priorities that seem to need me more.
Of course, I also need to get down to Saikland to check in on the vineyards and orchards. I am hopeful that the harvest later in the year will provide what is needed for meeting our usual wine production levels and give the opportunity to experiment with some new ideas I have had.
I think I will see if anyone would like to come along for a visit to Saikland. It would be good to have some travel companions.

Maybe there's a question you can answer for me, Scholar. Why was there a member of House Pravus - one with a title, no less - pretending to be a barmaid at the Murder of Crows? Eh? No, it's not a joke. I don't know why there was a Princess of House Pravus pretending to be a barmaid at the Murder either. It's baffling, it's bizarre, and it's just downright peculiar. No, I haven't heard of anything new on the Lowers streets that'd induce that sort of behaviour either. Maybe she'd just escaped the tender care of the Mercies, or something. Dunno. Weird, though.

I enjoy exploring the city during the winter. While most find the season biting, it allows me to consider both new and old places from a fresh perspective. I know some of my fellow northerners could agree to that, and it pleases me to meet those from elsewhere willing to brace against the cold.

It is so very good to meet someone that actually has some intellect. I mean, I always knew Savio was smart, but damn does he challenge me and get me thinking. I need more intellects in my life.

Turns out I am a coward so maybe this is just deserts. It's not like I can't guess what he would say even if I could get him to talk to me. I would rather sit on a red hot poker than this but if I am judged guilty then there is no choice but to bear the penalty as the only way this came about is because I was impulsive and gave injury. I can only hope at some point I find a way to deserve respite.

So cold, so much snow one could not see an arms length ahead. That heavy snow put a quick end to my attempt to visit the shrines. I barely made it to the Black Fox and sat there with friends hoping it would let up enough to get back home. If not, I've claimed a spot on the comfortable couches to nap if necessary.

I was reminded recently how trust is one of the most vulnerable things to give someone. It is a beautiful and fragile thing, but if it is tended properly? It can grow beyond the garden it is planted in. I am ever grateful to those who allow me to cultivate their trust so it can grow roots.
