Relationship Note on Noah

The best marriage advice is to have a board and stick of chalk.

Each time you're annoyed, irked, vexed, troubled, infuriated, bothered, soured, or exasperated (though don't forget the times that you're excited, cheerful, frolicking, confounded, happy, bewildered, aroused, contented, inspired, lackadaisical, confused, or gallivanting)? Make a mark (I will note that you must make the marks yourself; do not pass the chore off to a servant or accomplice). No words. No noteworthy expressions. No spiteful glances. No cheeky little glimmers of a smile. No meaningful regards or thoughtful stares. To really edge into the territory of expert marital spite? It's best to proactively scratch a little mark without discernable cause or merit on the random occasion. In order to attain a more monolithic status then you must make certain that you scratch a very distinct and purposeful mark following a particularly vigorous bout of lovemaking before you promptly depart the area.

Make your marks. Ideally when they're witness to the act, but at minimum ensure that one of their most trusted associates or servants is fed that tender morsel of potential gossip or report.

One must remember though, always, that the marks are irrelevant. They are neither a positive or a negative and entirely without true meaning. They are a playful game and bear precisely zero weight on your genuine outlook, feelings, or regard. The mark is simply a mark for the sake of creating a mark. An act of transferring that moment of annoyance or delight into that little segment of white (or colorful) line and being done with it.

Despite that lack of any true meaning for yourself? The sight of a stick of chalk may become enough to incite rage, even when that stick is simply being moved from one drawer to another. The sound of a board being marked will be like the crying of a whole nursery of infantile children masquerading as semi-functional adults. The scent of chalk dust in the air will be akin to the most powerful concoction to bring foam to the mouth and eyes rolling back in their sockets, as they enter some manner of berserk trance to rival even the most terrifying Northern warrior.

If your goal is to usher in your own doom, then it's the most enjoyable way. You'll have plenty of herbal supplements included in your cups within the month. If that fails to work, then you'll have no less than four gift daggers festooning your person within the fiscal quarter. Evading that fate is what builds strength, character, considerable dexterity, instills a healthy distrust of stairs, and ample guile. It's good for mind, body, and spirit! It is imperative to remember though that this is all an accomplishment of your own making, so there is to be no complaining when you harshly discover that you've bitten off more than you're truly capable of chewing! The silver lining of this point is that if you've achieved this milestone then you won't have to dwell on your folly for long!

Should you prove successful in this survival exercise? You're welcome to write me for additional marriage advice should you find yourself in need. My thirteen years of arduous trials impersonating marriage experience is at your disposal.

I think the one thing that has been simultaneously most frustrating and most fulfilling throughout my life is my curiosity. It pushes me to always be learning and listening, to take the time to meet other people and hear their stories, and to pursue novel solutions. But, as many others can attest, finding one answer will often lead to more questions. More meetings. More fragments of poorly preserved journals and half-remembered bedtime stories and torn up scraps of paintings. Some things are the worst puzzles. And in my mind, those missing pieces ache like empty arms, itch like unreachable spider bites. And sometimes the relief of filling in that missing puzzle piece is like scratching open a scab - it feels good, at first, but then you have an open wound to deal with.

Yet I keep looking.

There is a certain beat that drums can bring. And something far more haunting from strings added to that beat. We might have found the right tempo. Will need some more practice before it's ready for a a crowd.

Several weeks ago, I saw a most interesting brooch in the market. It gleamed like red gems and had golden accents. Perhaps I shall go back and see if I can find it again.

I suspect that knighthood will be coming soon, and with it a withdrawal from the House whose memory sustained me for so many years, the House who welcomed me on my return.

It will not be an easy thing, to leave behind such an honour and a joy, but it is the step that I must soon take.

I am glad I paid attention to some of my lessons as a child but I am left wondering how so much got excluded. Then again, it is just as likely the lessons were given and I simply wasn't present for them. Whoops. It seems like I will need to reveal new virtues before I get too old to wield a sword.

pulling a splinter nearly the length of your shin is not nearly as fun in how it got there. At least I get a flower crown out of the adventure.

Arriving at the right place, at the right time, is one of those odd delights of the world. A small coincidence, or a smaller breath of influence by the gods? It may not be the most significant of matters, but what a joy it was to be of help.

Is it crazy to not need to know how something works? Simply to trust that it will? Or is that naive?

The earliest blooms of spring have been stripped from our gardens. Grubby little hands have mangled the flowers. Proud children presented their bedraggled blooms to the Ladies of the household. That included female cats and dogs that looked puzzled at being presented those instead of tidbits of meat or a bone. Poor Golden (a dog) was taken by sneezing fits after given a clump of flowers. Gardeners assure me more flowers are budding and will soon replenish the flower beds.

I recently learned something that actually excited me! I sat down and spoke with a very interesting man that hails from the Undying Kingdoms. We got to speak of the difference between our religion and their religion 'Grace of the Thirteen'. Now those of you that know me, you will know I am a Liberator and follow the principles of Skald. So, to us, the worship of Skald is relatively new. To them, it has always been. Did you know that over there, exploration is considered an act of worship to Skald? It makes sense! Pathways cause us to stop and wonder which way to go. We can go right, we can go left. Should we go up? How about down? You could even choose to turn around. I bet Skald loves a good labyrinth. I wonder if this city has one?

I should stop smoking haze. It causes my brain to wander to think of so many different things. My most recent thought is more of a curiosity. Do you think that creatures of the abyss /want/ to be the way they are? Like who wants to be sad /all/ the time? That just sounds torturous. Who wants to always betray? That sounds lonely. Who wants to live a life so filled with greed it leaves room for nothing else? Each of these very powerful entities seem to have a rather miserable existence.

Now, do not mistake my ramblings for siding with the forces that work against us. I will defend my home, my friends, and my family to the very last breath. I just wonder sometimes if choice is something they get to enjoy.

On the heels of my writing about spring the other day, I wish to add that this feels like a proper season of renewal. Reconnecting with old friends and making new ones has been a trend recently, and I am glad for it. I have had the pleasure of spending time with people who are warm and caring and genuine, who care deeply about their people and the Compact and fulfilling their duties, who make the time spent in their company pass too quickly on account of how engaging they are. I hope that we all have the chance to find conversation and companionship in the days ahead.

Cats! What do you even do with them? They get into EVERYTHING! I found my one and only dress simply in tatters. One of these feline overlords was climbing all over it. It may be old, but I loved this silk dress. Then they look at me with those cute pink noses and I just squint. They are up to something. I just know it.

Seems that a bar has been bestowed to me. I am honored for this, but I would rather my friend remain in the city. It breaks my heart to say goodbye, so instead, I told him that I will see him later. I just hope that wherever he travels, he will find the answers he seeks.
