I'm rarely glad that I left Farhaven to come to this city, particularly with all the tragedy that surrounds me. I'm comfortable in the South, but I miss the cold hard of the North, the familiarity of it all. Needless to say, there are far too many weeks when I join in Deva's longing for home, even though I know my place is here for the moment.

And then there are weeks like this one, where that homesickness is the furthest thing from my mind, and I think perhaps this place could become quite familiar too. I hope for more weeks like this one.

Relationship Note on Donrai

The Prince of Maelstrom is not someone I have come to meet face to face. Not yet at least. We are but two passing ships in the night who occasionally share correspondence. He is the embodiment of House Thrax; unrelenting, unyielding, wickedly cruel.

It is a fine line of desiring those qualities in a lover or wanting those qualities for myself.

This has been an absolutely stellar week. New acquaintances have been made and I found time to attend Sir Silas Mercier's fencing tournament. Despite it's lengthy execution due to a system referred to as a round robin, it was one of the highlights of this past week.

Anyone who knows me even just a little bit knows I am an avid sports enthusiast. I love to be a spectator and when the mood strikes me, I can be something of a rowdy fan.

There were quite a few fencers present I could have offered a favor to, but it was Lord Eos Saik who I presented a swath of silk from my dress. Yes, I cut a piece of gold dust silk from my gown while sitting in the stands and presented it to him. He graciously accepted the trinket. Ever the gentleman that he is.

Since then I spend most of today in bed. After all that excitement I could hardly move.

Relationship Note on Cara

I am more relieved than I realized I would be to have Cara back. Just another Rubino on hand is enough to feel there is someone watching my back, particularly where Sylphie is concerned. And Cara's well-placed to earn confidences I would have to spend far longer to earn.

And more than that, Cara is -- Cara. She's always been calm and level-headed -- everything I am not. She complements me, such as Sylphie does, but without my having to worry about the knife approaching my back.

Trusting no one is necessary, but exhausting.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

Seems competent and skilled. A bit emotional, but I suppose that is something of an artistic trait. She was gracious enough to recommend several craftsmen for our renovations; I didn't even realize that Sir Silas was also a carpenter. In any event, her wares are clearly of a high quality. I'll certainly be back when I have need of them.

An intelligent, competent, and thoughtful scholar who is both of use to the Compact in this time of need, and to the people for whom I care. A thoroughly admirable practitioner of his craft.

Relationship Note on Cicero

Prince Cicero is a distant cousin to Esera and Isolde. I believe we first ran into each other at the inn, and I didn't even try to feed him anything gross. He has turned out to be a very interesting and charming man, full of surprises. His company is always welcomed and even sought out.

Relationship Note on Viktarkim

A shav the target of much jeering, sneering, and threats...from Fergus at least. What started off as a quiet evening at Trader's Tavern ended with me having to play peacemaker, when really the peace was him bellowing and me having to chase after my brother. The man has fought well and his patronage raises a few questions, making me all the more curious what made him turn coat an be in this city away from his kind. Trust? No, not in the slightest yet.

Relationship Note on Luca

Luca, why. Why, Luca. You're the duellist, the champion - you're specialised in fencing, even. Where were you this past competition? I hope Ophelia had you indisposed at an impromptu tea-party and you were denied any such alcoholic beverage you were fantasising over in place of nettle soup and roasted fowl.

It's your turn at the next public tournament, your highness. I'm going to have conveniently taken extra shifts at the archduchess' side right around the time the next one is held.

You'll have no choice.

Relationship Note on Dagon

A prince of the Thrax and one of the few competitors at the fencing competition actually worth their salt. As well as the ships they build, the islanders breed good warriors.

It's no wonder why the Velenosa-Thrax alliances are often strong. Pretty, smart women and strong, bold men oft make good matches and it helps that fat merchant vessels need well-armed military galleons to escort them.

Perhaps he'll earn himself a bride from within the Lyceum someday. Either way, he's begun to earn my respect.

Master Silas of the Iron Guard keeps cropping up in all the oddest places. From tourneys to the crafter's row and now in hosting a fencing competition.

I attended with Duke Niccolo in my capacity as Sword for House Velenosa and although it did not require me to be there I found myself playing the game of being a good little wanna-be knight.

I didn't even throw sand in anyone's face. Aren't you proud, father?

Relationship Note on Ida

I had once commissioned a sword from the smith, at my brother's silver and suggestion. It still sings true against others in spars, and I only hope to get to use it against some shavs some day. For now, I find myself seeing more and more of Ida and it is a welcome change to my usual routine. Lacking physical strength in exchange for the speed I have cultivated, a woman of her prowess marvels me. She has three children full grown, a booming business, and is still bettering herself and living life? I always thought of children as the end. A dismal one at that. She is surely a woman to admire, evidence that you aren't tying your own noose with such a thing. Hell, she knows how to have fun better than most.

What a charming man. Very intellectual and seemingly concerned with the greater good -- or at least, that is the particular tactic he has chosen to advance. Perhaps something useful will come of the acquaintance.

I believe the fencing competition held by Sir Silas was quite the success. Even if I did not win, I am rather pleased by my showing. I had put some of my training to the side to handle other business and to prepare myself more for the future. Now? Now I will continue my training and perhaps do even better the next time there is any sort of competition.

Prince Fergus is the one I will need to try and have a rematch with some day. He had the better of me yesterday unfortunately. Credit where credit is due, the man is talented with a blade.

Occasionally, you have a crystalline moment where the world seems to take shape, and you feel satisfied with your understanding, with the natural order of things. You feel as if your every breath satisfies you.

And then, you have weeks like this.

The good. The bad. The mysterious. The understandable. I'll take it all, but never let me ever hear myself say my life is boring.

Warm, talented, generous ... and she fed me and gave me coffee. Who charms the charmer?

Really.

Mistress Arterius has agreed to make me a set of carnelian buttons in exchange for a reading. I promised her that it would be thorough. She showed me the image of a ring she made based on a dream. It's been a long time since I interpreted a dream ... my own or anyone else's; it just hasn't been the vogue, and I am nothing if not thwarted by style.

I might need to do some dreaming for this one in the future, though ...

Blushes prettily when teased. Cleaned honey off of Hammar's beard this morning. He said he'd like to lap at her like a kitten. I could give worse relationship advice.

Young enough to be my daughter. When did that happen?
