Very well, Princess. That's all I needed to hear.

And equally beneath your station to say, exactly, ""You can dislike it as much as you like, but somebody loved Alarissa enough to give it to her and not spare a thought for anyone else." ?

Again, the next person who implies my dead brother did not love his own siblings enough to leave them something will be challenged. The end. I had no problem telling you right to your face that were it not for Edain being the one you were dealing with this evening, I'd have had you thrown out of the Manor and told you were not welcome anymore. So do not think for a moment that you are making a cogent point, Your Grace.

You and your wife both rightfully owe us an apology for your insult and your conduct this evening, but because of your station I did not demand it. But I did make sure nobody else will make the same mistake without knowing in advance that I will not suffer such an insult in silence again.

Relationship Note on Derovai

Goodman Voss,
No apologies are necessary, I believe you perceived a critique where none originally existed. Now, however, I must chide your choice of words, your implication that thoughtful discussion on the nature of our gods is merely ethereal. You speak (in my inferrance, naturally) as though contemplation and understanding of our Faith is not relevant to our daily lives. That it is not as important as other matters, or has no bearing on our choices. This is false.
You also seem to be implying that as a noble my time is idle, rather than busy with more pressing matters. This again, is very false. Though I note you did at least, include the possibility of being wrong.
I do not ask you to bow to me or my wisdom, but I do think you should consider, or reconsider, the importance of the gods in your daily life. Their wisdom should guide us all. Your wit and humor are yours to point in whatever direction you wish. Those unable to handle disagreement or challenge are often those who are insecure in their beliefs. Not always, but in my experience I have seen this frequently.
Regardless. I would hope that you consider my words, idle and ethereal though they may be.

Relationship Note on Alis

Is there really a need to twist words like this? If so, you may as well say them to my face rather than moving across the edge in other ways. I fucking hate dragging dirty disputes into the public view, but this one needs to be clarified.

The exact words used, in reference to an item that your brother passed on were, "He gave it to her without a thought to anyone else.". I made this statement while you were implying what /you/ wanted done with this item. The implication was not that your brother didn't love you enough, nor that your brother didn't think of you, nor anything because I didn't know the man. What I was getting across was "The man made his choice, respect his choice". I did not think it worth disputing how a man's final wishes should be handled.

If you take problem or offense to me, say it to my face. Don't parade it out here for everyone else to see so we can make a big dramatic show of it. It ain't mature and it ain't becoming of someone in your station to speak about the ones you call allies underhandedly like this. It's a misunderstanding and we can move passed it.

Squall should be a boy? Perhaps the babe is, and perhaps the babe is not. I am surprised my wife did not inform you, as she has informed me, that she believes that Squall is a boy. I believe that... we shall see. Of course, watch, Reigna will be right...

In case anyone wonders, implying my dead brother didn't love his living siblings enough to leave something for them in his will... I will challenge the next person that does so. Without hesitation.

Master Voss, you might benefit from a bit more Faith instruction.

Not to say that certain members of the Faith wouldn't be tempted to make similar remarks regarding the Thirteenth's (and the Sentinel's) all-seeing natures. Definitely not me though.

My apologies, Countess.

I hope you'll forgive my attempts at humour, poor as they were. Some of us have more pressing matters occupying our thoughts, we might forget how serious and dire a topic this is for those with (perhaps) more idle time to ponder the ethereal.

As always, I bow to the wisdom of my betters. I'll endeavor to keep my wit aimed at less sensitive topics, perhaps.

Of course He knows all and sees all. Why, only a fool would argue against that!

I'm going to have to have words with my dear uncle. That apple could have done a lot more harm than it did. ...At least my costume seemed to be well-received, even if no one else showed up in one. And my uncle doesn't count. He always looks like that.

The gods all watch over us, Goodman Voss. That is what Brother Driskell was speaking of. The Thirteenth God, He of Reflections. Granted he does not get as much overt worship in the Oathlands as he seems to garner in the Lyceum, but he was confirmed into the Pantheon and he has a place on most altars. He is an uncomfortable god for some, but his eyes, like all gods are on us. We are their instruments and our feet walk the paths they set before us.

Relationship Note on Mira

I met Mira Matessi last night at the Harlequin's party, the Grayhope lawyer on retainer. While the nobles flirted around the fortune teller, we went through the Maze of Mirrors.

Mira had one of those apples that loosen the tongue. I think she was embarrassed the next morning at the stuff she said, but I thought it was delightful. The party was about dropping your guard! Mira definitely did that and none would hold it against her.

We're all watched and our secrets known? Well, that's interesting.

If you have the address for this omniscient, all-knowing fellow, could you happen to let him know I'd like a chat?

There's a few questions I'd like to run by him. Work-related, you understand.

Really, this is sillier than all those people telling me 'all the best detectives wear caps' lately. Has someone slipped something into the city water supply since last time I was here?

That sounded far more ominous than I'd intended it to be.

I cannot wait for the opportunity to meet this little survivor. The way you talk about her, I know that she will have us all wrapped around her finger as Mia and Ellara. So many young ladies and princesses that I have been blessed to watch grow, but now I cannot wait for a boy. Squall should be a boy.

It is amazing to watch Kata grow. I wish I knew how old she is, or what her birthday was. Eliza, the wet nurse I found for Kata, and I agree that she is likely six or seven months old, despite her petite size. She has been trying to crawl, pushing herself up on those still skinny little arms. She has not succeeded yet, but she likely will, soon enough. I see how much she's grown in the time we've had her and I can just picture what it will be like when Squall is finally here.

In other news, Kael has invited my sister Eleanor to come visit and stay with us through the birth of Squall. I admit, I a little nervous. Eleanor is likely the sister I am closest to, but I have not seen her in quite a long time. Eleanor is quite different than I am, but we always got on well enough. Of anyone, she reminds me of Lady Tessa Moore. I tremble to think of the hijinxs the pair of them would unleash upon the city of Arx.

Mirrormasks are supposed to make people uncomfortable. They force you to reflect, literally, on things you'd rather not. I rather like his turn of phrase. Good reminder that someone, always, somewhere, can see us.
