I shall bear this in mind when the day arrives that I have need of a winning champion, then.

I truly underestimated how interested people would be in coming to an impromptu welcome party on my front lawn.

Welcome to Arx, Duke Ryhalt.

I do love the smell of freedom in the morning.

Reports have reached us indicating that the new citizens of Old Oak are settling in well. Free of chains, bereft of unfairly leveraged debts, and settling into a life that isn't built upon a grand foundation of bull excrement.

For so many years, there was nothing in my life. I had my family, but we were never too close. I had no friends, not really. Nothing good in my life, but also nothing too bad. Life seemed frozen. Life seemed stuck in stasis.

Now? Now my family is more active (even if Acacia is off sailing, still), and I have a whole new family! I have a husband. I've made new friends. I'm running the Murder. I'm a Harlequin. I'm opening the soup kitchen. There's so much happening, and now, everything is moving so fast. And the things that are waking up in the world seem ready to snatch it all away.

How do we slow things back down?

If it helps, here are some handy pointers:

* Don't talk about the hard life you lead as a noble having to decide who lives and who dies to those who are scrambling for food. They don't care.
* Remember that what you're deciding may be what is necessary but that people WILL suffer and die because of those decisions. Understand that the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few really sucks for the few.
* Stop telling those few how the sacrifices they're being forced to make are really better for the group as a whole. Even when it's true you're still an asshole for saying it.

And yes, when you get angry and petulant and peeved about people pointing out the very real wrongs being done, all you do is look like another idiot noble who doesn't give a half a silver for the commoners you're supposed to protect. A simple - "this is what has always been done but it's not right, and I am working to make things right but the work is slow going. In the interim we are trying to mitigate the effects like this," and then adding specific, tangible actions being taken in the interim is a much easier way of handling things. You'll find everyone less likely to lump you in with the people you're trying to separate yourself from.

Which is really just a longer way of agreeing with Baron Audric.

I spoke to Dame Esoka some time back. She told me of her desire to devote more of her time to the Faith. And we spoke of the Gold Order of the Dragon, Lady Niamh's legacy.

It was an intensely personal conversation, but I can share a few highlights. And a few of my conclusions.

For one - I realise now that Duke Arn Telmar was right. To be a Sword and the Champion of a House is to be more than a soldier, despite my protestations otherwise. I am perhaps not the finest leader of our forces, but I must be able to stand as an inspiration to them.

This ties into who I am, and who I want to be. It ties into what Lady Niamh wanted the Gold Order to be.

As such, I have gratefully accepted the mantle as Paragon of the Gold Order, taking over for Dame Esoka, and hopefully, I'll be able to honour Lady Niamh's memory properly.

I've looked over the Lair. I am amazed at what was able to be accomplished. It fills me with pride. I look forward to... Well. Seeing what we can turn all of this into. How we can make it thrive and prosper.

I'm also going to need to set down an agenda and some tasks, and perhaps call a meeting and discuss with various existing members what to do, as well as recruit more members and patrons.

Gods. Is this what being an adult is like?

I got Wyrmward cocoa beans to work with, and I mixed four new perfumes with them.
They didn't last more than a day in the shop!
I probably should put more on sale.

As someone who often -is- the lesser of two evils, and also used to be a commoner, it's really not that hard. Speak slowly, use soothing tones of voice, and try not to use any words over three syllables. Wait, no, that's how to calm a spooky horse. Have you tried not talking down to them? It works for me!

I met Prince Talen today (along with this wife). The man speaks of himself as if he's some awful knave, but I don't know that I believe him. I think he reminds me of Magpie? In a good way!

Though I know that most of the commons care not for the nuances that the nobility concerns themselves with, I sometimes find myself weary of explaining the difference between the lesser of two evils and endorsing an evil act. Perhaps I will simply stop explaining and play the tyrant they all so clearly wish to see me as.

Summer is almost upon us. I guess I should begin to make some plan for the upcoming all too. I think I might go on a trip. Someone promise to give me a tour of their ward once. I think I should take that person up on it. I have also notice there are a lot of orphans and refugees in the city. I should do more to help those that have been so fortunate.

Mind needed again. Makes me happy that this thing can still find ways to be useful to others, in spite of how it torments me sometimes. Lady Calypso visited me today, interrupted a vision of eyes in the inkwell, red, possibly from tears. She asked for help. Happy to oblige. Takes mind off of sounds.

I am sure many have written of it elsewhere, but the battle in the Gray Forest was a terrifying thing. I was far from the lines themselves, working under Lady Eirene, a most colorful but also skillful leader of our medical band. The injuries themselves were... well, I have seen similar, but not in such large numbers and with such urgent haste, but I feel I was able to do good work saving many.

And then, all of that, and indeed all the fighting we had been supporting, seemed to be undone by the terrible demon-elf leading the shavs. It is hard for me to put down the words, but he... transformed those who fought for him, and we were all beset by a horrible, unnatural swarm of insects, and had to flee. What a terrible foe, and how do we even begin to fight such a thing?
