I heard one of the Academy clerks that attended the tourney say that Guildmaster Joscelin's cheeks turned as rosy as the rubicund that her Champion won.

Inspiring.

... I'll need to purchase an empty canvas while on my way home.

Forgiveness is to release anger and resentment, and that must come in its own time. It cannot and should not be forced. Forgiveness is not for the benefit of those who have transgressed against us. It is for our own benefit, for prolonged anger and resentment are poisonous and detrimental to our personal and collective well-being.

Although they often are found together to the point of conflation, compassion is not forgiveness. Compassion is sympathetic concern for the sufferings and misfortunes of others, including the experiences that culminated in the transgression. Compassion is to have the empathy and humility to recognize that we might well be no different in actions were our circumstances those that the transgressor has known.

Mercy also is not the same as forgiveness. Mercy is chosen. It is neither weakness nor a sign that someone can be readily taken advantage of. It does not downplay or forget a transgression. Mercy is built on the foundation of compassion, which, again, is not the same thing as forgiveness. Mercy is to give someone an opportunity that they may never have had so that they may be better than what they have been. It also affords us the same opportunity.

Some have never had the opportunity to know better. Some are also demonstrating they they, too, will not turn the other cheek for feeling that they and their people have been wronged by our people.

I insist that no one is beyond redemption.

I reaffirm that not all will accept the blessing of betterment that Our Lady of Change grants us all.

I accept that those who reject Her gift of salvation must not be permitted to continue harming others, even if the necessary measure may be the transgressor's death.

I pray that those tragic souls will do better in another lifetime should they ever find themselves re-spun on the Great Wheel.

I maintain that we do all we can to ensure it does not come to that, and that we have only ourselves to blame should nothing virtuous blossom because we planted that seed somewhere it had no chance of growing into the goodness it is capable of being. Breaking through the darkness of the earth in order to sprout is difficult enough and not aided by the lack of adequate water and sunlight.

Nothing happens in a void. We have the Skald given right to choose how far back accountability goes, how to interpret the history that Vellichor so cherishes, and how honorably to comport ourselves in light of those discoveries. To keep these things in mind is just.

Somehow, I survived the Gauntlet tournament down to the last man. I have no doubt in my mind that Gloria must have been positively smiling and guiding me with her hand - and providing me assistance when I needed it most.

And then further, as I felt myself into a reckless, wanton display on the field...

...but she has that affect on me.

I may have walked away with the rubicund, but I hope for a much sweeter prize as well.

Relationship Note on Artur

While spending some much needed time with my brother Artur today, I was reminded of a memory from our childhood. Sometimes I would accompany him on his great adventures out into the forests. There were times it was just the two of us, he letting me tag along. Just as often our numerous cousins would come as well, the lot of us getting so underfoot that they'd shoo us all out into the snow! Regardless, whenever we would be deep into the woods, our boots crunching in snow and the hum of the world were really the only sounds besides our own breathing.

When Artur was off fighting great beasts or he and our cousins were planning battles, I would sneak off to hug the trees. I would wrap my arms around one and tell it that I just /knew/ it was really a great, wise, and kind spirit pretending to be a tree. That it was okay to tell me so, because I would promise with /all my heart/ to keep the secret. Tree to tree I would go, ever so hopeful and even a little nervous. Those great trees never whispered back, though, so I would run off after a time and play at war or healer or the sorts of adventures we made up while away from the grand halls of Farhaven. I sometimes felt bad because as we got older and still wandered the forests, Astraea seemed to worry when I fell behind with my tree-hugging and would have to come looking for me.

Still, thinking on it today and talking with my brother about it brought a smile at the memory, so I thought to record it while still fresh in my thoughts.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet some of the Rivenshari at the Greenmarch dinner last eve. Although I could not remain for the entirety, it is always good to welcome those new to the Capital and extend what help I can as a representative of their liege's liege.

The Rivenshari have suffered greatly as one of the Compact's newest houses. But I have no doubt that, with commitment and skill, they will rise once more.

What a fantastic fight! Screaming and shouting and shouting and hitting and-

I forgot how much fun they can be.

And then the Knight I favored won! When does that happen! Wow! WOW.

I was also properly scandalized. I don't know what to say about that. I'm sure I won't hear the end of it now-

...scholar, stop snickering. NO I am not smiling! Hey, STOP WRITI-

Silence can be profitable. It is in silence that, at times, we learn the most from our reflections.

You are welcome to join others at the Shrine. We'll respect your desire for silence and push you to speak meaningful words.

Tournaments have become extremely popular, but then, it seems useful for us to know how to coordinate and fight as a team. I am somewhat glad to sit out and watch. There's a lot to be learned by watching people fight, but sitting on the sidelines and observing is educational as well. Just because someone is out early doesn't mean they're not a good fighter. If anything, it often means that they're a threat, to be taken out quickly. Sometimes the lesser fighters get picked off, but it's generally once the biggest threat to one's own team has been eliminated.

Then you are confident in your archery skills, Baroness. You only need to realize that and be comfortable with the realization. Underestimating what you can do can be just as damaging as overestimating. By the way, I hope you will offer your cartography per my request at the tavern. It is spectacular.
