Everyone is weighing in on the killing of Esra by Lord Costas, so I might as well.

At the end of the day, you can defend Lord Costas by saying he committed and act of self defense, but the fact is he tried to apprehend Esra in the first place and Esra resisted. And even if Esra was resisting with lethal force, Costas could have urged Esra to flee. Lord Costas made a mistake. Now of course a mistake in the heat of the moment, one that I might have made myself if I was in his shoes, but still a mistake. Esra's crimes were no so grave that he needed to be apprehended the first chance anyone got.

Then we have the mistake of the charges brought against Esra. Excommunication was good enough, the other charges were clearly overkill.

Though the original mistake is that Esra made public statements in the first place. Even if what he said was 100% true, and I don't believe it was, this was never going to change anything. No one is gonna believe the word of one random noble over a highly regarded institution such as The Faith. What would have been a better way to go about it? I don't know. But this was a huge lack of foresight and egos getting in the way on all sides.

I will be your shield.

I have come across a poster that exclaims that Esra was silenced, and that King, Guard, and Faith will not protect you. But if you are reading this, I swear to you and before Limerance, I will be your shield.

I will turn my back to no innocent that needs protection.
I will turn away no innocent in need.
I will continue to strive to stamp out corruption within the Iron Guard.
I will continue to serve as Voice of Grayson.
I will continue to help when and where I can.

I will be your shield.

Reckon it be ironic Esra be killed and his so called proclamation removed. Sounds a bit like there were truth to his words after all. Aye but guess what, we aint be reading what them were cause it were determined we ain't allowed to hear em.

And I reckon when a man be cornered, aye he fighting tooth and nail to survive. Question being, who be calling self defense? The guy they gave a title of Sword too and who be knowing how to fight or the book worm finding out secrets fleeing because he be made a monster for em?

Fuck me silly. You all believe this shit?

Reckon I be needing a lot more whiskey to believe it. Please be sending my way eh?

Well, that was harrowing.

I do not recommend encountering a kraken. It does not go well.

May Mangata give peace and rest to her faithful sons and daughters who perished. May she forgive my foolhardiness.

Relationship Note on Estaban

It is ironic to quote the House model while fulfilling the very thing that it asks one not to do.

To use a House Blade to settle a personal dispute is rankest dishonor, and it shames not just the blade, the House, and the hand that has chosen to do so, but it shames every person who ever held that blade, including the former Baronness, and the very concept of the office. When you 'stand with' the one who committed that dishonor, you spit on Kima Saik's name, her honor, and the prestige of the office of Sword.

I have no idea when it has become fashionable to spit on the name of Gloria among the peerage, but it is a trend we could all do without.

Since I have arrived in Arx, I have learned many things. I have also tried to teach many things. One thing that I try to promote is keeping an open mind. Another is of course, unity... working together, learning about one another, understanding one another, and knowing that if someone is from a different house, or has a different religion, it does not mean you are against one another. It means that we should embrace our differences, because when they are all combined in a productive way, we are stronger and more knowledgeable. Diversity can be power.

Which all starts with.... keeping an open mind.

Yes, I come back to this. Because... keeping an open mind is so incredibly important. Part of keeping an open mind is not jumping to conclusions without gathering as much information as possible. Assumptions can be dangerous. They can be dangerous to others you make them against, and possibly dangerous to yourself. Even if you feel you know something beyond a shadow of a doubt, it is good to look at it from other perspectives. It is imperative you do so if you are not an expert in the field and do not have concrete proof. I would like to help teach many people many things.... this being one of the most important.

One thing does not always mean the same thing. Some words have many definitions, and as I said today to someone... Flour and water do not only make dough. Stir it differently and you have paste.

So please, please, remember to look into matters, gather all information, before you jump to conclusions or assumptions... I beg you.

I stand by the Sword of Southport, the man known as Esra drew his sword and Costas defended himself.

I can only speak for myself, though suspect I am hardly alone in this -- there is no greater feeling of accomplishment than when a blade that has come from your forge is admired. Even if only by its owner, that look is worth more than any piles of silver or gold in all of Arvum. When you are just as proud of that blade as they are? Bliss. Sheer and utter bliss.

Having seen Sir Thorley's blade personally, its age suggests being crafted by someone who I imagine is no longer present in our world. Were they here, though, I would very much like to meet such an amazing craftsperson just to see the hands that forged so fine a blade.

Whatever this dead man may or may not of did, the fact is that he drew is sword against another man. He made his choice at that point. Maybe he didn't want to be viewed as a mad man. Maybe he didn't believe in the punishment that would've been put on him. Maybe he wanted to go out and die on his own terms.

Regardless of his reasons, he's dead now. I don't believe this man that killed him went out with the intention of hunting him down and killing him in the street. I don't see it as vigilante justice, I see it as self-defense.

It should be left at that.

Relationship Note on Esra

Goodman Esra, formerly Wyrmgard, was my friend and colleague. I will miss the excited tremor his voice took on when he was discussing something that he was passionate about, his endless energy and vigor, and his huge heart. He was always willing to put heads together to research, and always had time and an open door to listen, though I admit I didn't take advantage of that as much as I could have. That's my own fault. I'm not a very open person. Not like he was.

Three out of three. Nicely done. Considered a riddle contest? Many fancy gatherings I've been to seem to have liked those, although I fear the answers to my questions were perhaps a touch obvious. Then again, so were the riddles.
