For posterity, I record the lyrics of the bannerman's call!

Sailors and scouts of the Pearlspire’s keep
Answering the banners’ call here to sweep
the seas from their coves; climb high, dive deep,
and guard Arvum now from a threat once asleep;
ne’er let the Spire fall to a threat of the Deep!

From Hawkhold let your wings spread wide,
Always soaring, high with your soldiers’ pride,
Scouts in the shade or horsemen riding astride—
Let Whitehawks rally to Graysons’ side,
Our trust in you shall never be set aside.

Kin in honor, back to back and standing tall,
Defending the Twain, they have given their all,
embracing in arms all who would answer the call.
From the Green or the Twain, Rivens’ hearts never fall,
and never shirk from service or dawdle or stall!

The Lighthouse stands upon the strand
Brighthold shines that guidance to hand
Yours the light, with Laveer, down to each man—
we’d all falter blind without your stand
Come now and light the way of our band.

Steadfast in honor and steady as stone,
Stonewood’s march will serve the throne,
Their strength and virtue none may disown
for this loyalty runs true down to the bone:
For the Crown, Stonehearth’s horns are blown!

Though Cedar Vale’s ash is starkly black,
Firevipers march for this Compact—
and though the county’s sure comeback
is new upon the Crownlands’ track,
still from the ashes will charge to attack!

Old Oak stands the tests of time; it could,
Serene as shades of the deepest wood,
wait in stillness for the end— but should
Deepwood Hold forsake the call to do good,
I’d faint! Stand tall with us, we know you would!

Keen-eyed Learies, ever watching, ever planning,
will lead to the enemies’ hides due tanning!
The Leaholdt’s finest warriors spanning
a march, from soldiers afoot to caravanning,
will be that Pirate’s sure unmanning!

Ashford, ever rising be, high in the trees
or crows’ nests, even; never catch these,
quick and sure, darting between the lee
and the fore; we’d be lost without you, please,
so come and defy the tyrant of the seas!

Pridehall’s forces are certain and sure,
Powerful as their their lord Lion’s roar,
You win glory, it’s true, as in days of yore,
so come now with us and defend this shore,
from the bloody tides of this pirate score.

None Greater than, the Griffins’ Shout!
None stronger than we, to bring about
the shuddering fear of our enemies’ doubt.
Graysons’ pride, our banners pennant out,
for with us at the fore, the Marin we’ll rout!

For NONE GREATER we cry with our battle lust,
NONE GREATER we call, for in our hearts we trust,
The devout love of liege for vassal must
make you the reason for our strength, so robust!
Our glory is certain, our cause is just!

MARCH NOW TO THE BANNER, SERVE THE CROWN
AND EARN YOUR HOUSE AND SOLDIERS RENOWN!

To clarify, my last white journal entry was directed to no one in particular but rather to anyone who feels offended by my choice to duel.

Relationship Note on Caspian

I have never been asked for my favor before, and yet he claims to want to carry it. Because I was involved in his emancipation. I still feel I have earned no such regard, but it is flattering to feel I did something right during my years speaking for the Isles. As it means something to him, I feel that it would be ungracious to refuse. I'm sure I have something that will be suitable.

You may want to hold on to some of those before you hit rock bottom, leaving no stone unturned might not leave you a place to stand. But with what I've seen, you're boulder than most, even if you take it for granite. So let's see if this contest is to be had, and start with a clean slate.

There is little that I've found makes the commons happier and brings them more levity than a good duel! If anything, we should have more to keep everyone's spirits up.

Relationship Note on Tikva

If that was directed at me, Your Highness, then I offer apology, and need to word myself better next time. Duels serve a very important service, both in honor to Gloria and to the cleansing of the mind, I do not at all disagree.

I mean more that this city needs levity as well, for the sake of moral that a duel cannot satisfy. But if you wish to call for Champions, I will stand for myself, though I harbor no ill feeling to you, so that you can settle any that my words have brought for you.

You can't use a figurine of Skald as a prize for a pun contest!

Skald hates puns. You should use a figurine of Death!

Puns, you say? With a figurine at the end of it?

I'll have to craft my responses wisely, lest they be sculpted without care. I imagine my pun reputation might grow to be quite statuesque.

Relationship Note on Harlan

Do you mean, Duke Harlan, it's easier to have an arranged marriage than to choose which pretty, useful flower you wish to pluck from the bed of flowers that is the pool of noblewomen in the Compact?

Or is it that the flowers read your words and now do not wish to be plucked?

The entire point of dueling is to resolve petty disputes and minor irritations without allowing such things to fester. It honors Gloria to clear our palate of such feelings, in preparation for a unified war as much as at other times.

If you are offended by my choice to use champions in this way ... may I suggest you challenge me to a duel?

Call for champions and be done with it.

Eirene

Establish your own dueling circle. Drinks until unconsciousness. Loser has to pay for all the drinks consumed. Winner has to make sure the loser gets to a bed safely.

This is not, in any way, an attempt to belittle the custom of dueling, duelists, or Champions. But it is right that the city now needs less hostility, and more companionship. Choices are being made, right and wrong, and all of our lives are still at stake with the growing threat.

While I myself was not at all subject to what the late Esra, Mangata bless him in his next life, subjected others to, is now the time to continue to hunt for a reason to remove a Sword from the House? Only if they are as large of a threat, I would think, else any verdict should come when they have been allowed to do their duty, which may well lead to them giving their life for all of us.

My dear Eirene, I am more than happy to mix you a batch of detoxifier, but considering how potent it is, I suspect you might wish you actually were dead until everything is worked out of your system.

If that is not deterrent enough, let me remind you that you are not allowed to die.

The longer I live, the more I realize that there may be wisdom in arranged marriages for the Nobility.

It definitely would be much simpler.

I'll have to remember this once I have children.

It is easy to spout words all day about how a blade and a pen and a candle should all be used only when appropriate, but much harder to evaluate when you, yourself, are doing so in the moment versus judging others in hindsight.

So I turn my own attention to what I am doing, at this moment and in the next, for the world that I live in. Am I making the most of the limited time on this earth? Am I fighting the battles I need, laughing when I can, reminding those that I love what they mean to me?

I am one of the newer house Swords. Though that seems ironic, considering I'm one of the older Sword bearers. When Duke Ryhalt found me, gave me the opportunity to clean up the mess I had made of my life and to carry Eventide for the House, I nearly balked at it at first. I didn't deserve such an honor or right. I ain't proven myself in glories and tales of victories past. I was a drunk destitute that was more likely to punch a man in the face than smile at him.

The Sword set me straight. Not in a mystical, magical sense. It gave me back something I'd set aside. The idea of self-confidence. Pride. Of believing myself. The first time I drew Eventide, and saw myself reflected in that darken blade, I felt physically ill. I surely thought I would wretch. I knew in that moment - that is the Duke was gonna put this upon me, I was gonna do my best to live up to it.

It's a struggle. I lag behind the other Swords. I gotta lot to learn. One on one? I ain't much on the field. I've had my ass handed to me more times than I care to count. But what do I really count? What I saw out there on the field when we were training as a team. Being a sword ain't about personal glory, honor, or a way to impress the women.

Being a sword is to carry the protection and honor of the house. But not only is the Sword supposed to be the sense of pride and safety for those of the House - it is it's own ambassador. A single blade will bend and break under the weight of the coming challenges. A bundle of Swords? It will stand tall- it will defend it's own and others. It will ensure the safety of those that believed in him or her. The Sword? It is an extension of the wills and wishes, the hopes and prayers of those that it represents. It is on us to honor their brave choices - and do no wrong that would bring shame upon those that have granted us that honor.

And it's that type of deep shit that scares me to death every time I look in that blade, and find myself in prayer often that I can come anywhere close to what Ryhalt was thinking when he granted me this Sword and all that came with it. It ain't the sword that makes you a better bearer. It's you that honors the Sword you carry.

You'd make a more honorable Sword than many I could name.

As a Sword who is not highborn, I'm professionally curious. Will the lounge blade have a fearsome name?

Sparte,

I say we host a contest of puns, the one who starts picks a topic, the others either play to the topic, or the one who gave the pun. If you can't think of a pun, you're out of the game. Winner gets a small Skald figurine. I'll provide the figurine.
