When the people you kill are murderers, it works well! Or if they're on the land of people who have your back. Or if you're rich. What, did you expect me to get defensive or be ashamed of what I did? I've done far worse, to far less deserving people, and been paid well for it. So yes. I found the people that killed my friend. And I butchered them, and their friends, I dragged their bodies back to Arx, and I spiked their heads on stakes and left them through the Lyceum ward. I'd say you have my deepest apologies, but you don't. I'm from the Boroughs. Someone hurts a friend of mine, they get hurt in return. Some people killed a friend of mine, so I killed them. So, yes. You're entirely correct. My business is war for hire, I do a lot of what people would consider murder. I don't see your point.

Since I have come to Arx, I have found myself reflecting on my career thus far, in the hope that I may continue to improve in my practice of the law. Though by now I have defended several, the first one always sticks in one’s mind. That first time, I was absolutely certain the man I was defending was guilty. I did not even entertain the idea of his innocence. However, I took it as a test of my knowledge of the law, and I was certain that I would prevail. There was no way to //prove// he was guilty.
Unsurprisingly, I lost.
It taught me a valuable lesson in both humility, and looking at every side of a case. If even I am unable to see my client as innocent, even for a moment, how can I convince anyone else of it? The letter of the law is not the only thing at work in a trial. No matter how well-reasoned an argument, if it is completely dispassionate, it is likely doomed to fail.
