Win a Caravel

Lady Juliana Igniseri has decided to host a new race. This will be a crew race that starts and ends in Arx with a midway layover in Stormward. The grand prize for the crew that wins this race will be a Caravel, named for your team. Choose your crew name well. There will be a second place prize as well but that is still to be determined.

1 This race will be held in 3 parts, at the moment I am thinking every other week. With a Ball at the end for the 4th event.
2: Entry fee of 250 military resources due at the beginning of the race.
3: A crew of 6 players, will be declared at the beginning of the race. Though only 4 will roll at a given event, the 2 extras are is to help each team with scheduling issues. All six are welcome in event for RP purposes.
4 Any person, house or organization is welcome to enter a crew.
5 All racing vessels will be Longships.
6: Like all voyages there are dangers, it is possible that such things can befall your crew and ship.

Please message Lady Juliana with any questions.

Captain Curls, an attentive, ebony guard poodle leaves, following Quenia.

It's a beautiful spring day and each Captain was called meet on deck of the caravel the Lady Jewels\, as it lay in anchor. Which of course meant they had to be rowed over from there own ships. Juliana\, dressed in her leathers and fireweave cloak met them on deck with a bottle of Setarco Fire and a smile. As the glasses are passed out.

"Thank you all for coming. As you know we are about to start on the second annual Isles Canines race\, this time to Stormward." to which she nods Duke Aethan and raises her glass. "Thank you your Grace for the hospitality." looking back to the others there is a small smile to the Igniseri's slips. "Starting.... now?" yes.. they are all on the wrong ship for starting... Now.

The Kennex team has been readying itself to go -- as have, of course, all the other teams, but still. They're ready. There's talk amongst the team members, as is to be expected, though when Juliana begins speaking it mostly quiets. A little pained look crosses Aethan's face at the use of that particular title, but he just nods, lifting a hand in acknowledgement of the thanks. He then says something lower, perhaps some encouraging words meant for his own team.

Even though it's been some time since Ian's ordeal in the North, he still hasn't completely recovered -- which speaks to the shape he was in when he got back. He's still thinner than he was, and a little less certain on his feet. On a ship, however, that doesn't matter much, as there's generally something to hang onto. And it's not like the Kennex sailors aren't used to seeing him fall. Fortunately, transferring from ship to ship doesn't require a lot of dashing around, and he gets there by the time the ship is ready to cast off.

Mikani smiles as she looks out at the day. She starts calling out orders to get the ship away. She has commanded a ship but it isn't normal for her. Which seems to slow down and delay how to get them out. Mikani grins as the newly formed Crovane crew seems to fall in together and starts to slowly leave into the waters of Thrax Bay.

"Good luck, everyone!" Evaristo says to the other captains, grinning wide and charming, whimsical and excited. He doesn't seem to take this a whole lot seriously per se - but he is a well-known captain that has sailed many years.

Once back on the sturdy old longship that team Scum and Villeiny has dug up from somewhere, Evaristo starts calling out orders with his cheerful attitude that rubs off on people. The team of commoners seem to be fairly coordinated - least so far.

Aella is more at home on the deck of a ship than anywhere else, and it clearly shows. "Duke Aethan!" she calls out, a grin touching her face as she stands precariously on the railing of her ship so she might be able to properly shit talk the other man, "I didn't know you were a High Lord. I will have to remember that next we meet, Your Grace!" Because one always has to take opportunities to annoy the other competitors especially after the face they make.

Wash has laid by stores for the familiar trip to Stormward. In a longship, it is a reliable two week journey. Compared to a two day journey with favorable winds on a cog, but Wash is known to be enthusiastic about all things sailing. "Who else is looking forward to sleeping under the stars?!

Porter utilizes his stupid long legs to get over onto the ship when the time has come. Sure, it's been a troubling time, but he looks relieved and excited to be on the ship with his family. And in competition! "Lets go!" he calls out cheerfully as his boots thunk against the deck. "Me! But lets leave Arx in our wake first."

Catalana isn't a sailor, so she hasn't bothered to dress like a sailor. She's come along for moral support? Maybe some social connections. Hell, maybe she plans to sabotage some boats. She stays well clear of the boys but enjoys watching the four of them in the element.

Zoey mostly stays out of the way of the more experienced sailors, sticking close to Catalana. She whispers something to her cousin-in-law with a bright smiles.

Ras is rowing in the longship, looking rather intent. A snatch of song from the Lowers team's captain might drift across the waves, and it causes a fleeting grin, and he joins in - totally out of tune. "Bet the rest of you don't got a BARD on your ship!" he belts out between stanzas towards the nearest competitor in the bay.

Wash says, "From the sound of it, neither do you!" Wash retorts."

Tanith is in the Scum and Villeiny longship across from Sydney, the brawler doing her best to get the ship out and underway as quickly as possible. She is quite focused and trying very hard not to laugh.

Ras bellows the sea shanty even louder so as not to hear Wash.

Felix calls back to Ras, mostly joking, "You know we're going out to /sea/... and I was a disciple of Mangata before taking my vows. What will you do when you can't hear the bard over the sound of thunder?" is called out with a grin, as the smith stands ready to help where he can.

Sydney is the second brawler on the ship. Perhaps brawlers counterbalance one another? Either way, she is bouncing hyperactively. At the shade being throw, Sydney bellows, "We're the /best/ at ships, and you're all going /down/!"

Catalana mutters to Zoey audibly "I really hope they don't decide to sing the entire way to Stormward." She's already looking for something to plug her ears.

Mikani calls out to Ras, "We may not have a bard ... but we have a Jules ... that's even better ..." She grins as the ship catches more wind and she calls out louder to Zoey. "We're coming for you Kennex!"

Raymesin too hauls on an oar, and sings. Apparently he knows several verses of this particular song with all sorts of words in it that noblemen and noblewomen shouldn't understand. It's amazing what you can learn in the Lowers - apparently, including an extra thirty verses of 'What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor'.

Vano spent the time before the race checking the Windrunner's rigging and sails, and will categorically deny anyone asking about any alcohol being brought along. He'll just use that later as an excuse when someone asks them why the Rivenshari are one of the last teams to finally get their collective arses moving when things get going. Either that or it just took longer to check the bells. So many bells. Everywhere on that damned ship. Well, the Rivenshari sure as hell don't plan on SNEAKING across the finish line...

Rosalind is on the Toska, her red hair bright and noticeable. She's just as comfortable and content on a boat as she is in the woods. She looks over at Mikani and Aella, a smile on her features,"Just let me know what you want me to do,"the tall Ravenseye says, her eyes looking back out to see. She's looking pretty happy right now, and excited to be here.

Evaristo just sings louder, and joins Raymesin in the most amazingly bawdy song. It'll burn ears. But it IS very rhytmic!

Cassian is taking orders from Mikani with a grin on his face, and is proving to be an able sailor, not that there was much doubt of that. "As long as we're working together, we cannot lose!" He laughs at Rosa. "I don't know that you've ever said something like that before, I wasn't sure you'd know how!"

Mikani checked charm + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 18 higher.

Evaristo checked charm + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 38 higher.

Tanith checked charm + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 15 higher.

Ras checked charm + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 11 lower.

"Enjoy sailing in our wake, Crovane!" Zoey yells back at Mikani.

Sydney hollars from the side of the ship, "You're goin' down, Crovane! The wind'll push you right back ashore! Y'got nothin' on us!"

"See, sea--I see the sea,"Rosalind laughs at her own joke but snorts at Cassian,"Shut up before I push you overboard!" Joking of course.

Tanith finally joins the singing, and manages somehow NOT to laugh because she knows these lyrics and they are pretty awful.

Cassian laughs heartily. "You can tell the favorite in a race by who everyone is keen to crow at! May the waters carry the best to the fastest finish!" He calls out at Zoey and Sydney with a bright smile and laughing eyes.

Sydney whistles low, "...Can't say I've ever known a man to brag about being the fastest finish, but aye, I suspect that may well be true. Don't mean much to winning a race, mind..."

The Lady Jewels was ready to go, so as soon as everyone not meant to be on her ship is off, Juliana's Isles Canine's crew shoves off. Getting out of the bay well ahead of the rest of them.

It is a beautiful day, the sun is shining, the sky a blue blue for the first few days there is nothing like being on the sea in perfect weather. Sails billowing, that damn Rivenshari ship with all it's bells but as long as you are upwind, the noise is carried away.. it is 4 days in before the bells.. the sails... everything goes completely and totally still. No wind.

Aethan checked command + leadership at difficulty 35, rolling 23 higher.

Mikani just looks at Jules. "Just keep standing there to look good." Mikani teases the man before she starts singing a sailing song to get them all working together. Her voice beautiful and warm raising up over her crew to keep them going in an ordered fashion.

Porter checked command + sailing at difficulty 10, rolling 44 higher.

Catalana checked charm + performance at difficulty 10, rolling 52 higher.

The suddenly calm sea does not seem to phase the Kennex team. Aethan starts calling orders to the crew, who snap to getting out the oars and readying them to row.

Porter isn't tremendously good at too many things, but he can do things on a ship! Which is good, because that's where they are. As the winds die down, he starts calling out to the other sailors on the longship, encouraging them, correcting form and doing some actual sailing himself.

Catalana looks at the crew and at Aethan. She's not about to sing some dirty sea shanty. Oh no. The golden lady of Kennex excuses herself from Zoey for just a moment to go stand over on the deck. She sips her hands around her mouth and starts singing some bold bright Kennex cheer song. She looks specifically at Wash and smiles as she sings some sort of encouraging verse.

Ian is in no physical condition right now for the strain of rowing. His upper body could probably take it, but not his legs. So he follows orders and helps to trim the sails to get as much out of what wind there is as is possible, and keeps an eye on the waves, looking for a sign in the movement of the water that the wind might be picking up ahead.

Evaristo checked command + sailing at difficulty 35, rolling 21 higher.

Wash expertly keeps the rowers in time, identifying when they need rest and when they can push themselves. He's the beater on the line, but the rope in his hand is ceremonial, he doesn't even twitch it. His voice is the only whip he needs to enforce Aethan's commands.

Zoey stays in her seat off to the side, watching with a smile.

Tanith checked strength + athletics at difficulty 14, rolling 27 higher.

Sydney checked strength + athletics at difficulty 14, rolling 52 higher.

Ras checked dexterity + athletics at difficulty 14, rolling 64 higher.

The captain of the Scum and Villeiny picks up his lute. "My dear shipmates, it is time. It is time to use muscle, to work up a sweat. And is there any more capable crew than this, for working hard? Let's get this ship moving!" He plays a dramatic uplifting short tune, and then he jumps onto some oars as well and starts rowing, but he's calling out the rhytm, and keeps an eye on everyone else.

This is about people power! Ras rows as fast and as accurately as he can, ensuring to maintain a pace with Tanith and Sydney while Evaristo sets the tune.

Tanith sets to the oar station like she was made for it, grinning from ear to ear, the woman incredibly, near stupidly cheerful about all this, even with the wind dying. She shouts encouragement, her sleeves rolled to the shoulder, muscular arms exposed as she puts everything she has into it and moving in sync with everyone else.

No wind? No problem. Not when you have an absolute powerhouse of rowers, at least. Sydney rises to the challenge by staying seated and throwing her back into it. Brute strength is good for something, and that's cutting through this dead calm.

Athaur checked dexterity + performance at difficulty 35, rolling 20 higher.

Raymesin, meanwhile, is nowhere to be seen. It looks as though the area under some of the unused seats has been turned into a little refuge, and the lanky Lowers man may well be lurking. Letting the others do the work, or something equally valiant.

Vano checked dexterity + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 77 higher. Vano rolled a critical!

Felix checked dexterity + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 49 higher.

Joslyn checked dexterity + performance at difficulty 15, rolling 7 higher.

With the ship becalmed that may set some sailors to worry. But the Rivenshari are much accostomed to long ships and so their crew hits the oars harder. As well, who has to fear the becalmed sea when you are favored by the wind spirits? Athaur, the captain begins to stomp his foot on the deck of the ship, marking time for the rowers. The bells are silent for just a moment as he begins to dance, filling the air with the jingling sound as they dance in praise to the wind spirits and to drive their crew onwards

As the wind dies down, the Rivenshari certainly do not. When Athaur starts his chant, Vano smacks fist into palm and follows his lead, setting those hair bells chiming in time with the stomping of big feet, keeping the fast rowing beat in time of their dance while entreating the wind to fill their sails. Quiet? Nono. Not these folks.

Felix may not be Rivenshari himself; but he lived amongst them long enough to at least learn a few things about the culture. And while the becalming doesn't particularly worry him, he's looking to Athaur to see how they are going to proceed. And it isn't long before he's taken a set of bells from somewhere - probably on the ship - to use to join in the keeping of time. And while maybe not the best of singers or dancers, he's at least able to make noise in time to the rest of the noisemaking.

Llyr has joined the Toska -- Longship.

Catalana has left the A Kennex Longship.

2 Kennex corsairs have been dismissed.

Jane have been dismissed.

Joslyn is trying to understand the ways of her companions, and she joins in with the stomps. Bells woven into her hair ring out, though she doesn't quite look entirely certain this is going to work, it's a little plain in her expression but she does her best, joining into the dance as well as she can.

Aella checked perception + sailing at difficulty 15, rolling 48 higher.

Mikani checked charm + performance at difficulty 10, rolling 52 higher.

There is something strange when it comes to the Dauntless. While the other ships stall as their sails seem to deflate, Aella orders the ship she is first mate on to shift their sails slightly. While it is not a huge gust, the sails never faulter, and there is always a breeze fluttering them open and pushing the ship forward. Aella looks pleased, arms crossed as she looks around, making sure the sails are shifted every so often to take advantage of that slight yet constant breeze. Still the oars are brought out to assist!

Cassian checked command + sailing at difficulty 10, rolling 54 higher.

Rosalind checked perception + sailing at difficulty 10, rolling 32 higher.

Rosalind is helping with the oars, laughing as the gust of wind touches her faces, her red hair blowing in the breeze,"Look out over there,"she calls. But then peers over. It's just a stick or something and continues to help out with the oars, her cheeks pink, a look of delight on her face.

Cassian is the career sailor, and it shows. He starts to call cadence to match the songs being sung, getting everyone into sync with their strokes. "That's it, in, stroke, out, fore, in, stroke, out, fore!" Cassian isn't the most well muscled man, but he has excellent form and a keen eye, helping the others among the Dauntless to improve theirs.

Mikani looks over to Aella and lets Aella step forward to take the lead. As the wind fill the sails, Mikani lifts her voice and starts getting the people on the oars to start singing with her. This keeps everyone in tune. The movements together helps the ship move faster with Cassian's call out of the beat.

Raymesin appears on deck of the Scum and Villeiny, crawling out of his little refuge, looking at the world around them, up at the empty sail, and then sighing. "What th'fuck are we doin'?" He looks at the others, rowing hard. "'E's a sailor, sure," he says, jerking a thumb towards Evaristo, "But I ain't, an' I'm not sure 'ow many ships the rest of you've crewed. This is th'/easy/ bit. There's Rivenshari and Kennexes and 'ooever that other bunch are out there. We ain't gonna win this, an' y'know what? Right now I don't feel like tryin'. Ev, get the maps out - let's go somewhere /interesting/. I need a beach, some booze an' somethin' ter stab, 'cause my blisters got blisters an' while this was a brilliant idea - well. We ain't got an 'ope. Let's go do somethin' else while no-one's expectin' us back."

Tanith has left the a well-used longship.

Evaristo has left the a well-used longship.

Alena Sparks, unamused first mate, Silk, the Seafaring Spider leave, following Evaristo.

Sydney has left the a well-used longship.

Raymesin has left the a well-used longship.

Ras lifts a fist and cheers for Raymesin. "Yeeeah!" he yells back. "Shit this shit!" Not that this makes much sense. But he appears more enthused by the tall Ulbran's plans than by the prospect of finishing the race. Their longship veers away.

Ras has left the a well-used longship.

It's a hard day.. some manage to find wind, some have to use their muscles to move their ships. Perhaps it is that Kennex luck that plays out for them but they pull out ahead of the others top the beat of their drums. By morning there is wind... so much wind! Perhaps those River Gypsies have been howling for it all night long. But it's moving everyone along. Then on the horizon comes a sight.... ships..... So many ships... all lined up between Stormward and the coming ships. Seems Isles Canines has set up a blockade!

Aethan checked command + sailing at difficulty 45, rolling 2 higher.

Catalana has joined the A Kennex Longship.

Aethan checked command + leadership at difficulty 45, rolling 20 higher.

Ian checked perception + sailing at difficulty 25, rolling 21 higher.

Porter checked command + sailing at difficulty 25, rolling 31 higher.

Wash checked command + sailing at difficulty 25, rolling 48 higher.

When they come upon the blockade, Aethan's eyes narrow, but there's not much hesitation before he turns to his youngest brother. "Find us a way through," he says to Ian, nodding once, before he starts shouting more orders -- most of those contain something about doing whatever Ian tells them to do regarding trajectory or speed, with some choice epithets thrown in for good measure.

Ian has taken part in his share of blockades in his day, blockades run by Aethan. Blockades that were perfect. They were perfect because they had to be, because otherwise Aethan got shouty. Nobody wants Aethan to get shouty. In Ian's world, everything short of perfect is sloppy, and from high in the rigging, he has no trouble spotting a place where a couple of ships aren't quite set up how they're supposed to be. "Turn her two points starboard," he calls down. "And tell Lady Juliana that the Canines need to learn how to set up a blockade."

Porter hears the comman from Aethan and the follow up from Ian, working his way across the ship to make sure that happens. As he's working the ship with Wash, he calls out over the side, "HEY LADY, JULIANA!" Wherever she is. Probably not within shouting range no matter how loud he is. But he's sure as hell going to try, "GET BETTER BLOCKADES."

Mikani checked intellect + riddles at difficulty 45, rolling 28 higher.

Mikani grins as she sees the blockage. Blocades were just puzzles. She starts plotting a way around the blockage and shows it to Cassian to call out the order to the crew.

Wash times his rowers' energy for the right moment, trusting that Aethan will find them the opening to get through the blockade. "Shields up!" He calls for the outside rowers to set their shields along the side of the ship. He doesn't trust the Canines not to make their life harder with a bunch of blunted arrows, or even a flaming two or three, just to test their reactions.

Llyr checked perception + sailing at difficulty 17, rolling 33 higher.

Aella checked command + leadership at difficulty 17, rolling 39 higher.

Cassian checked command + sailing at difficulty 17, rolling 47 higher.

Cassian nods at Mikani and grins. "Aye, Cap'n, we can do that!" He turns and shouts with a booming voice. "All right, hard on the port, easy on the starboard, we're goin' round this blockade!" And with that, he resumes calling cadence, using his own oar as a good example.

Working with Mikani, Llyr leverages his navigating skills to help plot the course past the blockade is the most efficient manner possible to go with Cassian's commands, helping the last minute corrections needed to go with the plotted course. This looks to be where Llyr is really comfortable, helping to be a pilot for the ship on the waves.

While Mika figures out how to get through the blockade, and Cassian focuses on the sailing, Aella takes this opportunity to lead the group as a collective with help from Llry. This ship is a fine tuned machine, and nothing is going to stop it from moving forward and no problems are too large that they cant get through them.

Athaur checked wits + sailing at difficulty 45, rolling 42 higher. Athaur rolled a critical!

Seeing the blockade, Athaur lifted his fingers to his lips, letting out a whistle through the air. Orders were barked in Ravasharing as the sails were fully opened. Feet stomped, keeping time for each stroke of the oars. The narrow ship rushed the blockade, almost looking to ram straight into it, before a shout was called out. Oars one one side were shoved deep into the water. Lines of the sails pulled tight to wrench the ship sharply to the side as they attempted to manuver and zip through the ships.

Vano checked wits + sailing at difficulty 10, rolling 19 higher.

Joslyn checked command + leadership at difficulty 10, rolling 51 higher.

Felix checked perception at difficulty 10, rolling 6 higher.

Rosalind has left the Toska -- Longship.

Rosalind has joined the Toska -- Longship.

Well, an advantage of being not just last but DEAD last is that you see how the blockade starts getting broken up by the ships that run it ahead of you, so when Athaur spots himself a gap in the coverage, Vano's already on it leaning on the rigging to pull sails to the right tack, while trying to chant the rowers on his side on, to pull the ship over faster and thread the needle the man found. Or, you know, they get rammed and the Rivenshari are swimming home.

Jules has left the Toska -- Longship.

Felix isn't much use, but he can at least keep an eye on the ships as they are moving forward - pointing out a couple that might be an issue for them in getting by. And making sure there aren't flights of blunted arrows or sneaky small ships hidden behind the larger ones.

Joslyn isn't much for ships, but telling people what to do? That's something she excels at, though she does spare a very brief moment to give Athaur a bit of a look at his brashness. "We're just gonna charge them? Not a lot of margin for error there," she muses before she begins barking her own orders at the crew, directing them to perform those very crucial maneuvers at just the right moment.

Aella is overheard praising Juliana.

Mikani is overheard praising Juliana.

Llyr is overheard praising Juliana: She ran a very good first leg of the race for a Caravel.

Zoey is overheard praising Juliana.

Ian clings to a railing, watching as Stormward's familiar port comes into view. "I'll keep an eye on the ship while you do whatever needs doing. Make sure Lady Juliana doesn't send the Canines to mess with it."

As they come into port, Aethan smiles. It's a small smile, but it's visible. He nods in response to his brother, before turning to finish getting them into port and home.

As their ship pulls into Port Stormbreak, Porter lets out a whoops of encouragement before he hops down from where he'd been perched. "It's good to be home!" He slaps Ian on the back before making to disembark, "I'll be back."

Athaur lets out a soft sigh as their ship slides in at last place. He considers for a moment and then shrugs with a smile. "Plenty of time left to catch up."

Catalana murmurs specifically to Wash and Aethan, "Perhaps now is the perfect time to tell the teams about sharkenoids." She grins and breathes out as home comes into sight.

Aella holds onto one of the ropes holding up the sails, watching the ships all come into port one after the other with a sense of satisfaction. She doesnt seem to care one way or the other who wins, and it is apparent by the look on her face, she just is excited to be on the water for something that isnt war or raiding.

Zoey stands by Ian at the railing as they pull into port, quietly kissing him on the cheek. "Wish me luck."

Rowing with the rest of the people, Rosalind is looking pretty happy. There's a big smile there as they pull into port with the rest,"Ohmygosh! Can we race up the docks, Please!!!"

Mikani is standing by the prow of the ship as it pulls into port. "It's been a long time since I"be seen Stormbreak. Come ... I'll show you guys the best place to get some whiskey. Unless you all want to try some rum." Mika says to those from the north as she welcomes them into the Southern Isles stomping grounds of her Youth.

Wash is quick to debark. "If this is anything like the last time, we're selling cargo, and financing a trip back. Keep an eye on the stores."

Vano hums under his breath as Athaur guides the Rivenshari in, half hanging from the rigging as he keeps an eye on their tying off, then shoots Athaur a look, "We need to pick up booze and treats and throw them at the other crews on the way out. Hard to row when you're snacking."

"Yeah," Joslyn eyes Athaur with a little chuckle and a sigh. "I thought we had a good chance there at the end, it'll take some bold moves to make this happen. I've never been much of the full frontal assault type," she says to Athaur with a grin.

Clara has this whole time been following orders exactly as she said she would. Though she looks tired she does look like she's having a good time with her family and friends.

Felix just shrugs a little as he watches the crew tie them to the pier. "Or more for ourselves for the trip back. But that was my first time attempting to run a blockade. Can we install a ram on here in case we have to do it on the way out?"

As they are coming into port on the Dauntless team, Llyr looks to Clara, "Maybe we'll get a storm yet....that's still on the sailing list, right?" He says it entirely too cherrfully.

"No no. We don't ram them. That's foolish. Ideally we would run the blockade at night." Athaur shrugs. "But I figured we were trying to win a race."
