Interesting thoughts, Emissary Zulana.

But not even Arvani oceangoing vessels can get past the whirlpool.

What's the point of being exasperatingly successful if I cannot get around the obstacles others cannot?

Hey do you know anyone whose sister got them an AMAZING gift recently?

I bet that person's sister is totally going to write about how awesome their sister is.

Right?

Relationship Note on Imogene

Never have I shed tears for any action I've taken, no matter who suffered for it. Life is a brief season, and the Seraceni must take everything before returning to the Wheel. But I took you from a safe place, a place where you might've found happiness with another, where you still might have occasion to hug your old, care-worn doll, Ser Mieu-Mieu, the knight-errant of Whiskershire when you thought no one was looking, or have touched keys of the clavichord to spread your enchanting music through a parlor.

Of all the treasure I've seen, none sparkled so brightly as your indigo eyes. Your manners were perfect, and your wit as sharp as any saber or cutting gale. Nothing brought me greater joy than to see you smile, those few times you let down your guard.

So much adventure still awaited us, Beloved. So many places to see, things to learn, and people to meet. My great dream was to see you forever lifted above the petty condescension of those who failed to see your immeasurable worth. Gods, I would give anything to weave that dream into a reality, and see the look on your family's faces when the king himself named you Countess of the Duchy of Ischia, Duchess Imogene Seraceni.

I have lusted after adventure all my life, as if it alone could keep me from drowning. Yet what would I not give to have spent my life in quiet retirement at your side, Imogene? For what lands could have held any mysteries more spellbinding than those of your heart and mind? What treasure could ever have equaled your friendship and love?

You have voyaged beyond my means to reach you for a time - perhaps for all time. I cannot tell if you ever loved me, but I am absolutely certain that I loved you. Fair winds, Imogene Seraceni. May the gods welcome you in Elysia, or may your next turn of the Wheel be filled with beautiful music and a loving family.

It's been too long since my last spar - I feel if I don't keep at it, my skills will go to rust.

I do wish that people would stop assuming that sparring me is some sort of exercise in stripping down to their Lycene smallclothes and beating one another senseless - I am more than happy to test myself against opponents who are armed and armored. When push comes to shove, I'm not aspiring to be a pit fighter. I am aspiring to be of use on the battlefield.

I hope I may find a worthwhile opponent in the days and weeks to come, with this in mind. I grow bored out of my skull beating on the same battered training dummies day in and day out.

Had a drink with a formerly dead woman. She was beautiful and mysterious and had really really good wine.

Apparently firewine is a thing. Or was. It came from somewhere just as mysterious, somewhere sandy. Eurusi? Why do the foreigners get all the weird stuff.
I actually opened my coat as I walked through the blinding snow.

It does leave a great many questions about how one survives such a fall, indeed. Sadly the only person who can answer it is the ex-Archduchess. The other party in that incident was misplaced after he left the Faith's custody.

I swear that the onset of spring is like clawing through a tunnel made of muck and snow that constantly collapses into itself while -all- you want is to be able to step outside without your extremities turning black from frostbite six seconds later.

Relationship Note on Elgana

My amazing cousin, Princess Elgana, had a dream about building a caravel. Not an actual dream, but the sort of ambitious hope that opens up the world to a person. At no few dinners with close family and friends, she spoke of the wonderful adventures that could be had and the good it might do for House Redrain. That dream formed into a passion that she not only achieved, but surpassed. One caravel turned into three, in no small part because of her efforts, and I was even allowed the great honor of helping to name one. His Grace allowed an investment from the House to help fund the endeavor, and Princess Helena and Prince Lorenzo contributed greatly as well, both in word and deed.

I am so proud to have been a part of this project along with my cousins and husband, and especially proud of Princess Elgana who can create great deeds from the seeds of hope.

As we listen to word from ashore, we hear rumors going around that some believe the Empire responsible for the city's current maritime troubles. The evidence for this is supposedly that Imperial ships can safely sail past this maelstrom where ships of the Compact cannot.

First of all, be reassured that we value clarity in such things; if you are the subject of the Empire's ire, you will have no doubt as regards that fact.

But second, we find this logic to be flawed. Imperial ships are also capable of crossing the ocean, after all, where Arvani ships are not. This does not mean that the Empire is responsible for all nautical obstacles.

If we might venture to suggest a more simple alternative explanation: perhaps we are just better at building ships?

Whatever the cause of your whirlpool is, however, we assure you it cannot be found on the Ordered Path. But should you require assistance rooting out and appropriately eradicating whatever corrupted presence is responsible, we will be pleased to offer our assistance.

I've only been in Arx for a few days, but I can already see why perhaps I wasn't allowed to visit previously. For starters, a great big whirlpool blocked any entry by ship. Even getting to the city gates was an adventure I'd prefer never to repeat! We had to set down on small rowboats and paddle to a more remote shoreline. I'm not entirely sure that all of my belongings made it after me. The contents of my trunks were mostly books and those tend to get weighty.

My arrival must have coincided with the finale of a celebration judging by the state of our Sword, a cousin of some distant variety that I found teetering his way down the hall. He wasn't the only one, either! Our Voices, note: neither of them drunk, directed me to the estate's library. I'm keen on making it my haunt for the next few days. Gosh, I hope they all had a fun time at that party.

The whirlpool in the harbor has me thinking about the last time Aethan and I went to Maelstrom. We were damned near wrecked and drowned by a storm that hit us on the way in. I saw things in that storm that I'll never unsee.

I'm sure there's a lot that I'm missing -- there usually is -- but the path forward isn't as clear as has been claimed. The path isn't even clear out of the harbor.

But who knows. Maybe I get another cryptic note.

I am officially not to climb stairs anymore. Only three pieces of tailoring a week from now on. Plenty of fluids and bedrest. About six months to go.

I am terribly bored, Scholar. Tired of losing weight, throwing up, and having dizzy spells - and the occasional faint. Only one so far. I do so hope that those who have taken out commissions with me will be patient, and if they are not... well, I have two little ones growing inside me to worry about. That is more important.

Oh, this horrible whirlpool situation has made it so much harder to source velvet and leather and other fine things for gowns and shoes. How frustrating!

I simply must vent about it. I hope that isn't too silly of me.

But I will do my very best to look my very best for all the parties to come, because I had a few gowns saved up that I have yet to wear...

Last night, I heard the most intriguing story. I must write a song about it: but I'm behind in my song writing and party planning too! Sometimes it's just much easier to journal a little than to get the important work done. But I will!

I'm not sure about what this whirlpoolyness thing is. But it keeps popping up. What I DO know is, all words are derived from somewhere. That said...it CAN be a word.

That said, I saw a woman today. Thought to be dead. Her skin looked liked marble. I swear I haven't been drinking. Much. It's like Arx has been playing tricks on me lately. Princess Esera Velenosa. Or as she called herself, Ex-Archduchess Esera Velenosa. I'll just leave that there....I mean, when you're pushed off a bridge thousands of feet, you don't survive such. Right?
