It's gotten to the point I knead dough in the bakery and my assistants giggle.

Honestly. There's better metaphors. I know there are.

For all those that believe they see another manipulating us, many and more only see what is immediately before them - what is immediately affecting them. What those people who think they see a hidden hand prying at cracks should realize is that they are exploiting a fault that was already there. It is time to stop pretending the divide is paper thin, and see it for the gulf that it is. Maybe it is time the Crown looked at its citizens in the Boroughs and asked them what it is they want.

After all, as Grandmaster Preston recently wrote himself, the problem is a condition. I would implore anyone reading this particular entry to consider how many acts of charity that they have witnessed, or been part of, during their time in Arx. And what about work programs? Even now, the Crafter's Guild has put out the call that they will hire those in need of employment, or train those who come seeking a new skill. It leads one to wonder if our education system is truly so lacking. Is there truly so little means of gainful employment?

Or is it more?

Members of the Peerage, rightly or wrongly, misguidedly or otherwise, you cannot go on throwing silver at this and assuage your souls and your hearts by claiming you are doing Gild's good work. There is more, much more, and it is much deeper than merely pressing a coin into a palm, or a bowl of soup into a pair of hands. When daily there are submissions into the Whites that lambaste the Peerage, the Peerage should really stop and reflect on this.

I beseech the Crown to lend their ear here, now, in the capital of Arvum, where men and women, young and old, are facing yet another crisis in but a few short years since the last.

I have looked into things for a long time and gotten an answer. A step in the right direction and now... now I have no more answers. It is that moment when you've been answered, but have you? Have you really?

As well, I'd like to remind everyone that our paths are our own. We must choose. We must stand by our decisions. We must accept what comes when we make them. However, we are more than one decision. We are more than a slip of forethought. We are blessed. We are loved.

You, my dearest reader, are so loved. You are so unique. Even if you are a twin, you are different people. Different paths. Different experiences. This makes you amazing. Never forget that.

For Gild we make of ourselves charitable. We give of what we have earned by the work of our hands - or the work of our tenants' hands, or the fruits of our dominion - because to give where there is need is the work of she whose grace is giving. The principles of civilization demand that where there is hunger, we must work to provide surcease.

But, Father, there is always hunger.

This new scarcity of food is new, but we all know that there is always scarcity. Look to the work of Solace in the lowers. You need sojourn no further than down the hill to see knights sworn in Gild's service and brothers and sisters engaged in her work.

But, Father, there is never enough.

The incompleteness of labor is not a reason not to labor. It is from insufficiencies that sufficiency is built. There is grace in each gift. The gods do not demand perfection, but effort.

The Church condemns violence, but does so sorrowfully. If you are in hardship, seek out the brothers and sisters of the Faith. If you seek to render aid and know not where to lend the work of your hands, seek out Solace and their good works. They can always use another pair of hands.

Relationship Note on Aldwulf

When I found him at the Arena, we quickly began talking. After a few drinks, I got him to spar with me. He may not have been the toughest opponent, but damn if I don't respect a fighter.

Thank you.

Everyone who's been trying so hard to help feed those that most need it - from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I've spent a large portion of my life living on handouts from generous individuals, so it means a lot to me to see that they exist within Arx as well.

There are people out there who need you and appreciate what you're doing. Please don't let scrutiny and backlash stop you.

People of the Lowers;

Do you want help? If so, what kind of help do you wish for and how do you want it to be delivered?

My husband got me the prettiest little fainting goat at the Artshall livestock fair. She is far superior to any other goat in Arvum.

You hear legends about people like the Knight of Ribbons. And they rarely do the source justice. She is so kind, so warm, so fierce, and so brave. I cannot believe she's offered to train me. What an opportunity. I am so happy right now! My tactics have always been a strong suit, and my father's sword. But to have such a hero helping me learn... is such an honor. She fought the same forces mine own father fought, but lived to tell the tale.

I'm surprised these events are a total shock to anyone. There may indeed be those stirring up trouble and encouraging the disorder we have seen, building up the discontent. But they are building on firm foundations - the Faith has long operated charity in the lowers and across Arvum to help those in need, but even the Faith can only sustain them. We can look after their orphans, we can feed the hungry, treat the sick, clothe the poor. But to change the condition of their being? That is something that the nobles and the other temporal powers must consider.

I am confident the Faith will do all it can, and try to do more. And equally I have faith in the people of Arvum that, no matter their discontent, they will respect the inviolate nature of the Faith and its people. I hope once we return from Sungreet, news of the honourable battle might remind some of the cause we all fight together.

I guess it's time to learn just how little those years and years spent on etiquette lessons, perfected calligraphy, and graceful ballroom dances prepare you for dealing with people outside of your circle of influence and solving problems which can't necessarily be solved with honeyed words or a bag of coin.

I try very hard to never write with an audience I will face in my day to day in the framing of my words. I suspect it's something I learned from my father, or my mother; they're both in the habit of writing their mind and their day to day in their Whites without reading the entries of them they know but sparingly. My mother says they are more apt to use their Blacks for most of their thoughts; it's just easier, she says, and leaving them opened upon their deaths serves the purpose they mean to. I'm not as disciplined as they are but I try. These journals serve as a window into the past for future generations. There is a duty to preserving a perspective, and while many argue the different ways to do so, I am the most satisfied in doing it in the tradition of my parents. I know I've the freedom to choose. This is my way.

Anyone who thinks those riots started because of a bunch of damned insects is an idiot or just looking for someone else to blame. Do you think people starving in the Lowers is a problem that only started happening when a whirlpool sprung up? You haven't spent enough time in the Lowers, then. Desperate, hungry, angry people don't need some mysterious villain to tell them what to do. They need some fucking food.

I know some people already probably think I am an idiot, over the scuffle and trouble at the docks. And I haven't even been here a week! I would like you to know, however, I was defending a gift. I would never part, if I could help it, with something someone put consideration into sending me. Then, of course, I was trying to defend my House's ward. Warning, not threatening!

Matter of time really before the people get up in arms about things. Sad to see it start up though. Glad that I have a large enough family to help keep things from getting out of hand, and I hope the good common folk of the city know they can always turn to a Culler for help if they need it.

I didn't work my way up from street orphan to shipping magnate to sit on a balcony drinking ale and staring at my ships. I'm here to keep goods flowing, to see the bellies of the people filled.
