There. I have finished my very first commission to a noble born lady. Quite satisfied with the results, if I may say so myself. Made a little profit, too. Hopefully she'll spread the word to her friends as she promised, and I shall find myself with additional custom.

To think I almost gave up on leatherworking as a profession.

I like to think that everyone is expecting me to compete in the Golden Decathlon but maybe thats the pride talking. Yet, I can not shake the confidence that if I were to participate in all three days, they'll be pressed to find someone that can match me. I will win and I better get something more than a lousy trophy. Like the crew, I yearn for something to happen that actually matter. War won't come any time soon and this, the competition, is a close alternative. I have my armor from Malavaunt and my blade from Ida, all I need is a sponsor and a fancy silk cloak with their sigil, and it will all be complete.

Relationship Note on Luca

Yeah, I know Prince Luca Velenosa is a fox, in both the family and attractive sense. He seems bored by almost everything, but he drinks whiskey as well as I do. Yeah, I kissed him at a party. He's cute. Whatever. You would too.

Relationship Note on Edain

High Lord Edain Valardin has a lot on his plate. Unexpected death dumped leadership of the Valardin into his lap, just like it did to my brother. He's very nice, noble and gracious, and deserves to smile and relax every now and then. I've made it my personal mission to make this knight let his hair down every once in a while. Shadow is a lot faster than Sir Arugula, but I try not to rub it in his face. I can't help that Redrain horses are so agile.

The Lady Monique's tastes are utterly without peer. Why, this top and these pants I am making her will undoubtedly make her the spectacle of the noble season. I cannot but be humbled and honored that she has chosen me to be the vessel of her vision. Having worked day and night, I'm almost there for the first proper fitting.

On other matters: I despise people who deliver goods late. When I say I want some prime leather to work with today, then I mean today. Not tomorrow. Not the day after tomorrow. It makes you wish you were a violent sort. The kind who knows how to slit a man's throat. The kind who knows where you live. Who has spent years learning how to move silently in the night, and how to open latched windows and doors. The kind who could, perhaps, put an arrow in your eye from a hundred strides from across a rooftop while you were visiting a certain house and drinking wine with a blonde whose birth mark is in the shape of a dolphin.

But no, of course I am not that sort of man. I am but a humble trader. Murder is wrong, anyhow, and I would never even entertain the idea.

Ah, Leather & Tradegoods.

You're not exactly a pretty store, but at least you're on the Merchant Road right by the Merchant Gate. Everybody who moves to and from the Upper Borough is going to pass right by your door! Now best watch the apprentice I hired to deal with customers when I'm not around. Indeed I best.

Can't trust anyone not to steal from you in this city. A sad fact of life. What happened to honor and duty hard work and understanding once's place in the world? Everybody wants to take short cuts. Its right sad.

Relationship Note on Luca

Prince Luca (my brother, by the way) is the most capable, entertaining, witty, handsome, and protectively delightful man in all of Arx. And his happiness means... well. Everything to me. There's never been anyone else who has quite cared and looked after my best interests as well as he has, nor indulged my fancies and hobbies without that judgmental scorn that some might possess. While some might say that he hasn't picked up his sword for awhile, it's obviously lost! What is a man to do? Pish. He might need a haircut and every tiny-tiny while a change of clothes, but he has all the makings at his disposal to be nothing but the very finest.

Relationship Note on Ailith

What Seraph Ailith does not understand is that if I was not so very-very well aware of the Right of Sanctuary, any malignant or malevolent flocking of birds would have ceased long ago by my own capable hands. How could she possibly be so very-very-very, VERY mean to think that I could not know better? She threw fire and brimstone at me with such fervor it's a wonder that it didn't set my silks alight! Now, now, don't get me wrong. I love the Gods and I respect and admire the Faithful to a degree that would almost be unhealthy, if it wasn't definitely healthy. I only wanted to seek an amicable accord that would benefit all. All, except maybe the half dozen malignant or malevolent birds which needed to be put down. This is understandable, isn't it?

Relationship Note on Gareth

It's almost as if Fate has Prince Gareth sitting at almost every single pew or couch that I'm near, as if it was intended to be so. From the time he valiantly came to my aid in regard to the very-very sober and fearful conundrum ongoing at the Shrine of Mangata (do ask me later) to the Gala of Ascension where he was always an arms length away (except for the times he wasn't), we are becoming swift friends that should never part. While he did not seem to enjoy the shine to the very-lovely-scented wound ointment that I tried to dab upon his face in the Salon, he sees through to the very core of me and inspires my obsessions to new heights! It's wonderful! My very-very fantastic plan is that he will assist me at some point with a menagerie of my own, and I, in turn, will keep his dancing feet from every tripping over a brazier again. Oh. I know he's cold and he likes to glare and he tortures people day in and day out without blinking one of those eyes that make other people shrivel. But to me, he's wonderful and I will hear nothing less.

Relationship Note on Valencia

Valencia is refined and clever, which is only natural as she married out of House Velenosa and into our family. It's really such a shame that Angus died so soon. They even seemed to get along! She might be the complete opposite of what most expect from a stereotypical northerner, but it feels like she fits right in among the Redrain.

I'm furious at you for dying, father. Furious. Sometimes I forget, and I go into the study hoping I can catch you between meetings and hear your laughter again. Then I remember, and the ache just won't go away. No matter how many people are here, the villa feels so empty with you gone. I miss you, and I swear that I will make every last bastard responsible pay in blood for what they've done.

Relationship Note on Morrighan

Morrighan worked for my father, and he seemed to trust her a great deal. Most importantly, I like her a lot. She's bold, seems to have a good head on her shoulders, and doesn't hesitate to stand up for herself. I'm glad she has aligned with Redrain, and I hope we'll be fast friends.

Relationship Note on Fergus

I respect him; I always have for the things he does. I'm happy to help him with anything, and I hope at times he doesn't take my distaste toward how he acts to be more than it's hard for me to tolerate his ways, because I try so hard not to act like that's an effort, when you're moving on from grief. When you feel like you could have done something different to change it. Hopefully, given some time he'll come to see things my way. If not, he's still family. Just...a bit too serious, always. If not downright dour.

Relationship Note on Calypso

My sister's dry wit, morbid sense of humor, and no-nonsense manner are impossible to miss if you are in her presence for any length of time. The same qualities that win respect from our soldiers can, at their best, be a reminder of the force that backs Southport's interests.

The pointed discussion of assassination at the Celebration of Arts wasn't diplomatic. It can be amusing to see people squirm, but achieving the objective is more important than fun at the expense of our peers.

But is it good that everyone be reminded from time to time that whatever threats they think to make, Calypso is already having fun preparing contingencies against?

I need to bring her to more gatherings that look like they will require more spice.

Relationship Note on Gareth

What can I say about Prince Gareth Grayson? An Inquisitor whose family is always foremost in his thoughts. A man whose obvious scars may be matched by ones within. I doubt I'll ever know. When he looks at you, it feels like a man trying to identify a tool. The Inquisition's work must be as terrible as rumors say to strip the habit of humanity. He is difficult to read, so perhaps I romanticize it disproportionately.

The gala was, as I suspected, a true representation of what it is to be a Velenosa. Opulent. I could carry on with the adjectives, but I won't. To be brief, blessedly so, everything was done just right. Upon the ballroom floor fine men and women twirled about, dressed in their finest, looking like something out of a fairy tale. That, too, is no surprise - where wealth flows, just about anything can take on the aspect of fantasy.

Naturally, everyone will be talking about Duke Niccolo, and his saying-but-not-saying that any willing to shed blood has a chance at his daughter's hand. Or the consideration of a chance, at any rate. More, there will be more than a few that will also talk about how the announcement came as something of a shock to some. Of this I shall only say: no matter how old you are, your parents ever remain your parents.

Relationship Note on Bliss

Champion Bliss Whisper.

Charming, graceful, agile, and a scrapper. Be still, my heart.

Her dance was the highlight of my Celebration of Arts, though more may remember her from Lady Calista Fidante's Tournament of Roses. Her performance in the melee was nothing short of impressive.

Don't keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. From her manner at the Tournament, I suspect she can be quite saucy. That she is quite proper otherwise shows respectable self-control.

If I did not have Lady Kima, I would certainly have her champion my honor sometime. I wonder if I can contrive an occasion for her to accompany me, perform for me, and fight for me all on the same day? It's exhausting to imagine. Is her endurance up to the task?

Relationship Note on Monique

I had the great honor of being commissioned by the Lady Monique Greenmarch to make her some leathers. Without a doubt she shows her generosity and her kindness, and I cannot speak highly enough of her.

(Did you get all of that? Good. Let's see..)

Yes, she is beautiful and radiant and perfect, and never have I had an opportunity to work with anyone as..

(Shit, I'm out of words. Put in some flowery bullshit and we'll call it a day. Thanks!)

flawless and beloved by all as she.

I'm doing the Decathlon.

Sure, my archery is fair shoddy and I fucking hate jousting (and riding and horses in general), but that still leaves eight competitions in which I'd say I got a decent fucking chance to, if not win, then at least not look like a bumbling fucking moron. The only ones I'd be fair fucking disappointed if I didn't beat the rest at, would be the skiff and the grand regatta.

I'm a Thraxian. Sailing is in my fucking blood.

Anyway. I don't care for the fucking glory of it, and not for the fucking prizes either. Screw that. No, its the challenge that appeals to me. Three days of competition, of running and swimming and sailing and fighting, and most of all of hurting. That'll be fucking hell. Overcoming that hell, it'll prove something. To me.

Because fuck what everybody else thinks.

The Gala was everything I expected and a few things I didn't. Flowers, wine, dancing, respect for the deceased - expected. There were several statements with implications I found surprising, and some that were surprising in themselves.

Most of all, though, I believe Duke Niccolo surprised everyone with his announcement of a tournament. I was listening very closely, however, and I don't think he said what people are taking him to mean.

He said that anyone who wished to marry Grand Duchess Esera must be willing to spill his blood for her. He said that he would not give even a moment's consideration to any would-be suitor who did not risk himself in his tournament.

Allow me to be direct at the risk of sounding gauche, gentle reader: he did _not_ promise or imply an offer of Esera Velenosa's hand in marriage to the winner of the tournament. Consider that for a moment.

Was that his intention, if not his words? I don't think so. It sounds as though he wants to recreate the partnership he shared with Duchess Carlotta Velenosa - and maybe he does. Any good man would wish the best for his daughter. It will certainly give proof to a suitor's dedication.

If it works out, it will be, as Princess Ophelia said, "so-o-o romantic." I hope it turns out as he hopes.
