Relationship Note on Joscelin

Mistress Joscelin fashioned two pretty pieces of jewelry for Lady Dawn's Market Day. I greatly favored how intricate the earrings were, despite being carved of simple and common pewter. She was pleasant, with real character when I had the chance to speak with her, however briefly. I've heard nothing but high praise about her, and the fact Mistress Ida speaks so well to match only makes me want to get to know her more. I'm not exactly blessed to join them in their skills of metal-working artistry, so I hope she drinks whiskey. Always kinship to be found in that.

Relationship Note on Marcas

I've considered Captain Marcas a friend for awhile now. He's easy to talk with, easier to drink with, and there's something about the manner he carries himself between casual and refined company that draws out my amusement every time. But watching him unleash in the pit was something else, as well as the switch to something closer to normalcy afterwards. A fearsome man, that.

It was an interesting mixture of entertainment offered for the evening, with both competitors who weren't quite as expected to win pulling through with the victory.

Admiral Alrec won the Decathalon in brawling, but standing up against a man of Hammar's size was quite a feat. He won by display of brutal skill alone and it was well-done. The Ulbran is owed credit though-- the man certainly wouldn't fall and stuck through with it until the end. You can only imagine how fearsome that would've looked if he had his warhammer in hand.

Much of the bets had fallen on the Sword of Lenosia and Captain Aodh, however, and it was a fight well worth waiting for. Up until the very end, it was everything the crowd would've wanted (or at least most of the crowd) and more. It was certainly memorable and worth it for the outcome, with the Sword unleashing assaults up until the very end and very nearly taking the win himself.

The crowds varied greatly and while I won't throw it out on blast to who attended, each brought their own distinct flavor. Mistress Jessamine is owed favor for her skills, however, and I hope she was able to gain new interest in the people she assisted.

As for the clean-up, well. People cashed in for their profits and most bet quite large. And the floors were thoroughly swabbed of the blood afterward, at someone's particular bidding, and await the next contestants-- and perhaps new torches.

I am reminded to write about how I suppose I started down the path of pugilism. I hadn't really though on it much, if at all, until Mistress Acacia asked me about it. Funny how things like that are not so much forgotten, but put to the side of the mind somewhere until someone calls it forth, out of the blue. I am no knight and never will be. I am, however, Valardin. Due to my trade and, I suppose, my natural size (maybe one lead to the other? Who knows?), I have been strong since my teens. I never could stand people who used their power or strength against those who could not hope to counter such things. I still can not. Whether a Valardin virtue or just my own personal one, I feel that if you going to pick on someone, it better be on someone of your own size or bigger. There's no honor otherwise. And if I catch you doing so? You should be prepared that I may decide to step in. Which, I suppose, is partly how I ended up furthering my skills with my hands as well as the anvil.

It has been far, far too long since I found myself along the edges of a true fighting ring. Once again, Mistress Acacia seems to have the ability to draw people to an event and have each and every one of them leave the gladder for it. Or so it seems to me. Now, I have to admit that some of the tactics used by the brawlers rub against my Valardin sensibilities, but I was unsurprised to see them, considering the venue. I suspected I would see as much and even with that, I can't deny I enjoyed the bouts a great deal. It was difficult to watch Master Hammar and Admiral Alrec, two fighters I have personal experience with and who I also consider friends. The fight between the Sword of Velenosa and Marcas was not an easy match to watch, either, simply due to the /how/ of it, I guess I'd have to say. I'm unsure how I will fare against any of them when my time to fight might come. I'm also not sure those crowds will have much appreciation for the sweet science, as we Valardin call it, or my fighting style. I am reminded to follow up with Master Talen about meeting up at the training center. I likely could use a few good work-throughs. Regardless, I wouldn't have missed the event for about anything and can hardly wait to be in a bout myself.

Relationship Note on Eos

I finally met the Lord Eos Saik, Knight Kima Saik's brother. I saw him briefly on Market Day, and I was pleased that he remembered me for a personal project he had in mind.

Strangely insufferable. Not an asshole. Definitely unlike many of the nobility here.

I need to not make crazy choices when I'm sleep deprived.

Work is done. My reputation is probably forever far too colorful for polite company. I made a man covered in blood smile.

I'm going to bed now.

Relationship Note on Jacinthe

I received a letter from Jacinthe, that she is leaving Arx for some time. She didn't give me details, but I'm not surprised to see that she's pursuing opportunities out of the city. She always struck me as being very ambitious. Perhaps one day she'll return, and we'll get to share a drink together again.

Relationship Note on Torian

A man of the boroughs, he could blend into any crowd. He could convince you he is rabble, unclean. He is neither of those things. I know power when I see it. Influence. I saw the way the crowds in the Hollow moved around him. The way they listened to him. I was glad to share his arm, and his whiskey. Glad to whisper with him. But I know what I am to the people of the lower boroughs. Just another Silk.

Relationship Note on Torian

Sometimes I think I see danger where there isn't any, and other times I wonder if I'm the only one who sees it.

I had a long conversation with Torian early on this week, after others had kept us busy with bloodied knuckles, split lips and scuffed boots. I couldn't remember the last time he and I had fought side by side. He reminded me of a lot of things then, and even if there was a rekindling of some internal pain somewhere at the end of it, I felt better that it happened. It was a necessary clarity which brought me back to focus. He's good for the Cullers. If he wasn't, I would've pushed then, wouldn't I have? He says he's bad with crowds, but he does far better than he lets on. But that's the way of it. There's something steady about him, grounding even.

It was interesting to watch him at the Hollow and how he interacted. I'd do it again.

Relationship Note on Jessamine

Jassemine, a healer of some note. Though he had not known her name, the southern Sword had asked around after the event. A woman of some skill, it would do to reach out and contact her again. While payment was made by the man and his liege both, there is a debt owed in blood-- in thanks. Service for service.

Relationship Note on Dawn

She shines with the strength and the warmth of the rising sun. She is a bastard, but she is more than that -- more than a title. There are people in this world who belong to greatness. You look at them, and you know it. Feel it in your blood. She is one of them. I will offer her my hand, and she will warm me; I will raise her up, and we will shine together, bright as flames. Unity is a beautiful promise, isn't it? So sweet.

Relationship Note on Darren

Darren Redrain, a prince of the north. The wastes of ice must cool these folk in a similar way the sun bakes those of the Lyceum, the Velenosa. Blunt to subtle, the two are polar opposites-- but this is something one must explore. Talen Artiglio intends to explore the differences of cultures, so he might better interact.

Relationship Note on Marcas

The Hollow held a new kind of experience, one of blood and passion, one of violence and renewel. Marcus Aodh, a man of brutality; he proved himself. The Redrain breed good soldiers and Talen was glad he had the opportunity to fight one. It is something to consider-- these men are tough, powerful, good opponents. A challenge, for once.

Relationship Note on Alistair

Inquisitor Alistair and I imparted hushed words tonight, between only us two and dangerously quiet. Initially, they started with whiskey being shared, but there was heat not associated by alcohol at the end of them. While I can hardly go against a Hood when it comes down to it, I think I learned something in that exchange. He's kind of fascinating, isn't he?

They took me to see my mother -- what was left of her -- her head, her shorn hair. Beneath her lashes, dark like my own, you could see them: the legs of a spider. I opened her eyes, and there they were. Not eyes, no. Not hers. Dead spiders. Large ones. Spiders ... The Spiders. Terrible things. How much have we forgotten, I wonder? How much must we still remember?

Perhaps there is some truth that all we of the North need to have a good time is good company and an endless supply of spirits to take any occasion to the next level, as this was the case for my friendly wrestling match with good friend, Prince Darren Redrain. A lot of our brethren came out to cheer and spectate our fight, though I sadly lost in the end. Lady Brianna matched against him afterwards, and she certainly would've bested him, had he not come called a draw before she could really let her colors show.

We had some interesting guests in attendance as well. Lady Dawn of House Grayson snuck into the affair and drank and jeered with the crowd as if she were one of our with such grace and poise, it's no surprise no one raised a brow at such foreign, lovely company. Mistress Larissa Whisper attended as well, vivacious and the source of such delight and merriment as always.

Relationship Note on Nadia

The Duchess of Stonedeep is an old friend. I remember well the times spent as children, chasing monsters and things. I don't suppose she ever thought she'd be Duchess one day - her brother was the one who was supposed to ascend. But we've both had a great amount of loss in such short periods now. She does Stonedeep proud as their Duchess, and I remain proud to call her one of my dearest friends.
