Eirlys and I have always been close. For a long time, it was often us against the world. Not that we didn't have family, but after our mother died and our father withdrew, we spent most of our time together. There are few who know me anywhere near as well as she does.

So I think it was inevitable that I would ask her to oversee the small ceremony that Alis and I had, to honour my faith like we will honour hers when this siege finally breaks and we are able to travel to Sanctum. But this one was for us, and I am so glad that we asked her.

Thank you, my sister.

I am informed, alas, that the Compact cannot, at the moment, afford alaricite ballistae. Or can it? Should our enemies be reading this, I hope this keeps them in suspense. If future historians read this, assuming the Compact survives and this page does not mysteriously vanish, I hope they will take the matter of alaricite ballistae for granted and spin some unlikely but entertaining fantasy about its makers, like some histories I've had the occasion of skimming through of late.

However, and thankfully, House Ashford can afford copious amounts of whiskey.

Books.

Recently, i went on a book shopping spree. Had a bookshelf made and bought as many books as I could find to fill it... it's not full. Some have been encouraging me for some time to write my little stories into a book. I had a rather vivid imagination as a child, and spent many evenings making up tales about nature and the things around me. I have spoken these tales to some in Arx. Perhaps it is time to begin this hobby, though for some reason, I am nervous to do so. Imagine, Khanne Halfshav, an author.... Maybe I should create a pseudonym to do so...

Sketches. A view from the top of the walls. Far, far below, a splatter of dust. Brisk sketch of Magpie in a great coat, the folds of which nearly bury him. He fiddles with a dagger. A skull next to a mirror, mirrored. A flame next to a mirror, mirrored. An unseen shape in the rain, leaving space but no features. Window frame sculpted like twined dragons and long-tailed birds, beyond it, the stars. Little brown birds assembling a nest in the ashes of a campfire. Few more skull studies, scattered.

Relationship Note on Sparte

I remember meeting the kid coming into Arx pretty much fresh off the farm, wide-eyed as can be. Now half the time I turn around I see him down in the Lowers and up on the wall whacking Bringers like an old veteran with that big sword of his.

They better appreciate him in the Iron Guard! He's come a long way.

Relationship Note on Karadoc

I can't believe he made me go to my window. The man can be so smart and resourceful, but few drive me to drink quite so much. I'm not sure what his game his, but it seems wise to be weary of anyone who would serenade you off key.

Relationship Note on Killian

I wandered into the Training Center a few days ago, intent on finding someone to spar, and found Lord Ashford hitting himself with one of his blades. I advised him to master wielding a single blade before attempting to wield two at once, but this appeared to fall upon deaf ears.

So I beat him with a stick.

To be fair, it was a very well-made stick.

Relationship Note on Freja

Freja remains steadfast and true, and one of my closest friends. I'm proud to have her stand beside me as Voice of Redrain. During these dark times, we need all the help we can get.

Relationship Note on Ann

Princess Bookworm has come to the City. Though we are under siege and facing terrible dangers, I'll admit that seeing one of my favorite cousins gracing the halls of the Villa has put a smile to my face.

Welcome to Arx, Bookworm. I hope it is the adventure that you seek.

We have planned all we can at the moment. I can't help but feel and worry there is information we're missing. I wonder if I will feel this way before every mission? Taught as a bow string waiting to be loosed on my foes. It's a frustrating condition when there are things to be done here. I look over the ships again and again, count and re-count our men, worry, and wait. I will be glad to see this deed done.

That was possibly one of the more interesting nights I have ever spent at the Queensrest Inn. A barrage of players from all walks, vocations and class; there was talk of the siege and nearly everything else, an impromptu etiquette quiz that ended really rather horribly; something found and well, something lost quite suddenly all over the floor. Needless to say, I think I managed to placate the Inn's staff -- with lucky everyone will still be permitted back in the establishment. One only needs one such exciting night in a life time.

Relationship Note on Rymarr

Steadfast. That is what I think when I think of Lord Rymarr Lyonesse. Though he has left the his calling in the King's Own, the Oathlands are lucky to have on their favorite sons back. This is a time when we can use every blade we can get.

I know he feels a bit lost now, but a knight of his caliber will find his path. I hope I can help him do so.

I did not realize that it was custom among the nobility to propose by messenger. Upon reflection, however, given the nature of their alliances through marriage treaty, it does make sense to me, and highlights how though we share the same city, breathe the same air, face the same perils, their world and mine is so vastly different as to be on separate continents.

It is, at the very least, an interesting thing to find those who are touched by the gods..to meet with them and hear of the gifts, strange and myriad, that the divine have blessed the defenders of the faith with. It is inspiring to see the evidence, in the people who move about us, that the gods have not forsaken us and shall not do so. The enemy at our gate may be fierce, but it is nothing compared to the power of the Pantheon.

I know how you missed giving Alejandro back to his owner. And you can't always replace something like that, but I hope Soot, twin to Synder, goes a long way to shoring up that loss and something we can share as Cousins. .

Relationship Note on Silas

I don't consider myself, in the general, a particularly prideful man.. I've an entirely laundry list of character flaws and defects, am passingly lazy when I can get away with it, am entirely discourteous and strongly fail to take things seriously when I should..but..even so, getting beaten so readily by the Lord Commander wielding what basically was a stick..that's simply depressing. Certainly he is an accomplished swordsman, but..I had hoped to fair better with my sword against his spear, especially considering he claimed to lack particular practice with the weapon..

I think I'll be spending more time in the training center..alas.
