I have planned for relief efforts within the city, in the hopes to bring back some commerce and to assist those in need. Hopefully, this will make it easier on many people that are in need these days.

I still say we ask one of your undead friends to swallow a crocus bulb or four and see what happens after a while. Or maybe an apple seed or two. Aye?

Last I checked, the contents of my chamber pot are no better than that of commoner, so how is anything of what I am better than a commoner? And didn't the Queen of Endings state that a soul is a soul, be it king, pauper, Whisper, or beggar?

I daresay Leta's smells better than mine, honestly.

Oh aye, she's going to kill me for that-

Fought with me in a real fight. A battle. Nothing teaches you about somebody like watching them fight for their life, rather than fun.

Bringers of Silence. Fomorians. Giants. We don't know all of the things that were in Brand's service, but we know that he was not the source of them, and that their reason for coming to Arx remains.

That means there will be others. In a month? A year? A lifetime?

So Brand is dead, or at least stopped. The city is saved, yet the streets are still red. I don't believe I will ever forget the sight of the shavs being cut down, helplessly. I slew many in battle, but to fall on an enemy unable to fight back...

If this is victory, it is bittersweet at best.

Relationship Note on Eithne

A PARTIAL LIST OF THINGS THAT ARE COMPLETELY UNFAIR ABOUT EITHNE THORNBURN

* Being the best armorer in Arx (alaricite!!!)

* Having a forge with a better selection of whiskey than ('Murder of Crows' is scribbled out) some of the city's taverns

* That time I raced you into the store and you were fast and agile enough to slip past me even though I was pretty sure I was blocking the entire doorway

* How effortlessly you get my attention

The city is safe, the compact has drawn together. All in all, a job well done, I should think.

We won the day, and it is as much a relief as a triumph. So much had been put into the effort of making our stand, and despite all that from the after action reports I've read it was on the precipice of disaster for us at several critical points before the valiant forces of the Compact were able to rally each time. Even in victory, the losses and destruction are staggering.

I was able to spring a few of our ambushes on the Bringer forces headed to the graveyard, but the enemy's choice to commit the primary assault by small craft in raiding parties of handfuls at a time served to bypass most of them. And so it was that we quickly consolidated amidst the army of the dead defending the Queen's catacombs against seemingly unending waves of dominated Shavs, Bringers of all variety, and even a Fomorian or two making their landings.

I don't know how to properly describe the experience of this battle, it still seems more than a little unreal to me. It was constant motion, fatiguing physically and mentally. The attackers spoke not at all; the dead rarely had much to say beyond going into a mild chattering panic when one Shav made it through to hit Aureth with his sword. (I also don't know how to properly describe what it's like to see an animated sword-wielding skeleton panic.) The rest of us, the Knights of Solace and resident defenders of the Boroughs, scattered as they were, every shout and wail, every cry of triumph and death, they were all too clearly heard above the constant clatter of wood and steel. The Thraw Ward roared with destruction; the assault became more and more pressured. And then, as if the army arrayed against us were marionettes with their strings cut, the attacks against us ceased.

I went to the shrines to pray, and to give thanks. What else is there to do, seeing the unreal minions of a goddess rise up in defense of the world?

When we were younger, you were one of the first reasons I saw life outside the Telmarch. You brought me on adventures, and took me outside of training and studies. Brought me back to Sanctum, and out into the forest.

I'm grateful to have you at my side in the city once more. I'm proud to serve the Valardin.

I like this one.

This will prove interesting, methinks.

Despite the academic answer provided, I am unconvinced that spider webbing is not spider spunk but I really hope that I'm wrong. I should probably start taking away foreign objects from Sophie when she finds them on the floor. Ugh, just another thing to add on my "to do" list when it comes to the family.

I have the best sisters a man could ever ask for: Sophie, annoyingly adorable, and Isabeau, annoyingly attentive.

And how could I forget Ansel? I think he grew his hair out to try to sneak in. I'll give him an honorable mention.

I am glad we are safe--for now. I am sorry for those who were lost. Too many; always too many. I miss--but there's no point in going over that again, is there?

But I am afraid, looking back, what I will remember about the climatic battle of the siege is this--the paralysing sense of helplessness, of uselessness. Of sitting in a room and trying to chat while others were fighting and dying.

I am a duchess, and a Zaffria, and I swear I will never feel so helpless and useless again.
