Relationship Note on Mason

Firstly I would offer my sincerest apologies. This idea that something I was apart of might have inspired such painful memories and feelings is appalling, and for that can only say that I am so sorry. A Courtesan and a Whisper in particular is a scion of her city, she is a reflection of what is cheered for and what is cherished and celebrated most - and I would not have you end your day believing that any of us celebrate slavery. I would have loved the chance to speak to you on this matter personally before the auction took place and I will offer an open invitation to seek me out for any reason in the future, particularly if you are struggling with parts of our culture that are foreign to you. We are educators, politicians and artists of every ilk - knowledge is our saving grace.

Many people have already stepped forward and offered their thoughts on the matter so I will not say much else here. There are of course vast and numerous differences of what transpired last night and what you have witnessed in your lifetime, I think that goes without saying. But for me personally, the biggest difference was the simple and beautiful humility of it. It was an honor for me to host everyone who stepped upon that stage, and I can not express that enough. Theirs was an act of selfless generosity, and I could no more ignore or condemn that than I could your personal feelings and tragedy. I am thankful and humbled for that experience. I am proud of everyone who attended and gave to the charity, which in my mind was what most of us were focused on. With so many people still homeless after the siege I would like to think what we managed to pull together will put many roofs over families heads once more.

Again I would urge you to seek me out if you are so willing. This will not be the last auction that is hosted by the Whisper House as there were so many people I had to turn away that had wanted to participate. In Eurisi auctions are for the unwilling, they are the reflection of a broken society. In Arx they are a celebration of the individuals that participate. A different society, a different culture and a different world.

Speaking with some Ashfords for the first time in a while; the idea that we can now actually spend some time outside the city is amazing. There is a lot to do in the city still, but even knowing I can go back to Farhaven right now makes the heart a little lighter.

So many messes to deal with, it's almost overwhelming my emotions and causing me frustration. Things with people, things with the job, everything.

At least Serah is still my sunshine. I pray she never loses that innocence.

(P.S I think I'll go for a ride outside of Arx for a few days...clear my head.)

Life is good. Surprisingly enough nothing horrible has happened to me in the past few days.

Relationship Note on Aleksei

Aleksei Morgan. Former sellsword knight and champion, now Archlector of the First Choice and Paladin of Freedom. How times change...

When I think back on our first meeting -- as he sought me out to speak about the Lost Gods, what seems like forever ago -- it strikes me as odd to realize there was ever a time before I trusted him so deeply. I've worked with him on what feels like dozens of inquiries into forgotten lore relevant to his temple, and he with me on my investigations that led us to the ritual of the paladins.

But if I think back on those earliest meetings, I realize that he's still the same person at heart as he was then -- he's only grown into it. And the Compact, thus far, seems the better for it.

My attention was drawn to the new sellsword group of Isle Canines, led by Prince Dominic of Thrax. As surprising as it is to see a Prince of a Great House leading a group of mercenaries, while of course claiming that they are not guards of his own House and so presumably should not be counted as men at arms (a policy which, I am sure, will be challenged in short order and will make the work of the Lodge in training watchdogs and the like far more difficult and unprofitable, as the nobility withdraw their interests in owning such), I do think that his customers should consider the following.

A dog will always work for those who have trained it, and you will never know what additional orders it has been trained to obey.

A while ago, for my birthday, a dear friend gifted me with a book about writing poetry. Secretly, I think she might have given it to me in the hopes I'll give her poems rather than make her look at artwork, and if such cunning was the case? I'd have expected nothing less. Regardless, this book offers suggestions on how to start a poem, and one of the thoughts was to find a random line from a white journal and make a poem from it.

'You mumpsimus' ...

I have, understandably, come to a roadblock in this poem. I believe I'll have to read through other of Miss Harper's journals in the hopes of finding more words to mash together to create this particular poem randomly chosen from the white journals.

PS: I believe your advice to Sparte is spot on.

I had to sort of follow the trail of journals back from Fortunato's to find the root of the current disagreement. I was rather surprised to find nobles of Arvum speaking of their intimate knowledge of slavery in response to the reasonable concerns of a native of Eurus. I don't think there are any among us who can claim to know the nature of chains more than someone who hails from the birthplace of slavery -- and fled his homeland in rejection of it.

There is a reason that people don't tend to explain sailing to Islanders, horseriding to Oathlanders, swordfighting to Champions, theology to priests, and so on, and so forth. Prince Mason, in my experience, has a remarkably nuanced understanding of slavery in all its forms, and his opinion and reflections on the subject isn't one I'd so readily toss aside.

It's at least worth thinking that putting a person on an auction block looks a lot different to someone who's seen it happen in Skal'daja. That should be respected and not condescended.

I've been watching the celebrations and knightings and honorings of those who fought in the war with a faintly bitter amusement. I'm unsurprised, in truth, but still might hope. The Lyceum has its own priorities, and we are not a nation to praise others, over ourselves.

The effort to turn the Verdant Hall into a meal center for the refugees currently residing within Southport Square is going well. Or as well as can be expected. We honestly still struggle with having enough volunteers to adequately serve those who arrive for breakfast or dinner, but it has not prevented anyone from getting something to eat, and all have been remarkably patient and kind. I suppose I am only surprised because, were I without a home, and everything I had ever owned, I would feel bitter.

It seems I have much to learn.

Now is the time for the bold and fierce women of Thrax to assert their will into the Salt. If they are worthy then Mangata will see them through the turbulent storms and find them a place within the Leviathan.

There are so few right now but upon their shoulders are the dreams of strong Thraxian women like my mother.

Since the resurgence of texts from the Forest Lord, I've been intending to dig into them, to find more and read and to learn more of his ways. Instead, though, I've found myself busy; assisting organising hunts, prayer meetings, and the Gray Forest takes up increasing amounts of my time. Brier is always tired, poor girl, and Lindsey has been falling asleep on the table as she read one of the reports to summarise for me.

I'm tired. I have much to do, still, and my work with the Ministry of Agriculture is important.

We must not grow soft in the rest between battles. The war is not one. One does not snuff out centuries of plot and fiendish behavior after centuries of preparation. I have watched as people breathe, rest, and lose sight that before us is the time ripest to take the fight into the depths of those whose foolishly stand before the will and feats of mortal man.

Now that the siege is over, so too is my vow to offer martial training without cost.

I have found other means to pay homage to the venerable goddess Gild, and they are without the double edged sword that is freely teaching others how to take life.

Honestly, scholar, I think that is the best prayer I have ever written.
