Relationship Note on Shard

Should there come a time that I need an arrow to fly true? I'll speak to this mercenary.

One must simply be prepared for her to question the necessity of loosing that arrow. She does seem to enjoy being contrary, yet it never seems to be for the sake of it. She has genuine concerns and, if one only takes the time to hear her out and acknowledge those concerns, she seems appeased. Thankfully, she seems to be in possession of wisdom enough that it's often better to acknowledge her view and incorporate it into strategies.

This does not make her infallible, but it does make her a valuable asset in our objective. Soon I will need to sit and have a more personal conversation with her. Perhaps she would enjoy some discussion over pie, I know I do.

Spring cannot arrive soon enough. I have already witnessed the slow growth of my garden and I long to see the blooms.

Winter is a difficult time for me. It is dark and bleary. I yearn for the heat of the sun and Spring I've come to learn is the sweet promise of Summer.

Soon the Villa will be sprawling with roses of all kinds. Hibernation is almost over. I will have to pry myself from Inigo's arms and introduce him to mornings in the garden. I am sure he will adore it as much as I do.

Relationship Note on Jareth

Anyone who truly knows me know how much I love the arts. It is only fitting then I find a muse among the Arxian actors from the Black Rose Theater.

A master of his craft, a man who has risen from his meager beginnings, Jareth is more than just a performer. I would highly recommend for everyone to stop by the theater and witness one of his performances.

You handle your poison well. The next time your staff force you out of the office to get a break, let me know and I'll give you some more.

Relationship Note on Morrighan

It has been quite some time since I saw Morrighan last and since then she has been knighted. I cannot say I am surprised by this. She is truly deserving of such a title.

Dame Morrighan, I wish you all the best in your new position and know you will make Redrain proud.

Ah, the price of a life! I ask 7,000 silver to immortalize a person, when I ask at all. I can't say to paint a person is innately harder than to kill them, I do find it incredibly hard to kill a person. Easy enough to push a fellow like me over. However, I must also observe that for an experienced killer, an average person's death is the work of a moment and may be paid accordingly.

Replace silver with ideals and I'm not convinced lives are always worth much more. Depends on the scales you're using, I suppose.

Don't think that I didn't see you trying to put yourself in harms way during the siege. A scout has a way of seeing many things at once. Please try to take better care of yourself. You cannot lead armies if you are dead. And, you cannot be a sister if you are dead too. We need you too much in this fight, and I need you to keep me sane during court events!

Hundred silver a head, usually.

More, when it got bad. How it was with my last company.

Sailors are in high demand these days. Between the Thrax looking to rebuild their fleet and parties setting out for the Darkwater Rising, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting some quartermaster or second officer looking for hands.

Haven't taken a job yet. Too dangerous so far. Or too warlike. But I bet as numbers get low, they're going to offer more and more silver. And then?

Then I might set sail. After all, more coin means more to impress the girls at the Murder with when I get back.

My first direct encounter with the Compact was with a mercenary. That is to say, my first direct lesson of Compact culture was that among the Arvani, human life can be assigned specific, monetary values, often surprisingly low, and that this is a commonplace, accepted, and entirely legal practice, at which a good many people make entire careers out of. 'Different' is a very mild word to use for how I felt about it at the time, so I certainly understand.

My name has been put forth by Valardin's Voice as one who may do deeds of arms in support of Thrax, our easternmost brethren within the Compact, and this offer has been accepted. I hasten toward the docks to do a knight's duty toward our foes from astride a ship's deck, rather than horseback. I expect this endeavor to provide some opportunity for valor, amid a great many exercises in humility.

A knight's first duty is service, and I must ever strive to serve well. Having been absent for the great Siege, I am eager to begin doing my part in earnest.

Today I witnessed what can happen when a people are blinded with fear; fear of the unknown, fear of what they face. They saw something charging, and so wary are they of attacks, they did not stop to ask why... or what... They did not stop to hear my words of warning at first. They attacked. Others tried to make them see too, but still, they fought. Finally... finally they heard us. I guess I need to swear exceedingly loud to be heard by some. Just in time too, the true attackers were noticed before it was too late.

There were too many losses, but one loss is too many, is it not? We beat a massive army though, and for that and the fact the Spirit was able to escape... I am grateful.

I don't know what I would have done had I failed......

Journey from the Gray Forest, Day 8

I have discovered that I do not like axes. More particularly, I do not like axes when they cut into my flesh and leave me limping for days on end. Still, I think the wound would sting far less if I had managed to deal one in kind.

This woman is someone that is a Vice-Captain in the Valorous Few. She is a wonderful commander when it comes to battle, all the same I find mercenaries a curiosity though. But I suppose some fight for coin rather than ideals. I've no issue with it, just always found the practice different.

(This page has been written in charcoal)

The Siege of the Grayson Camp was one we could not have expected to be what it was. First what some of the Shaman said was a spirit came. It was enraged for some reason or another, that could be seen. I'm glad it is recovering, but I stand by holding my ground to protect others during it all. Still I wish we'd have known ahead of time and saved us trouble, but that situation at least turned out (mostly) for the best.

It's what happened next that was the true tragedy of the night. A band of over one-hundred shavs almost to two-hundred, outnumbering all of us and our soldiers alike assaulted. While many fought quite valiantly and tides of the battle were turned eventually, we lost many good men. It was as much a defeat as it was a victory in a way. I am glad that my plan worked for the most part, but had it been more successful, we might've had many less to face. I'll make up for the supplies if I need to, but each one we take down before their charging lines come at us is better chances of survival of people.

All I can think about though is the faces of those that were caught in the flames, even though they were enemies. It's something I've never had to do in war. I have seen it done, but from afar. Up close, it's different. I hope that our mission will finish up and we can pack up for home, but I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of the new wars that are on the horizon with recent news.

Relationship Note on Joscelin

I've seen stunning work and fine craftsmanship before. But I've never seen work that's taken my breath away and left me speechless.

Until, of course, Joscelin took me to see the Five Paladins that hang now in the Jayus Gallery of Art.

All five of them were unique, interesting and spectacularly crafted. I know how hard she's worked on them, the time she poured into each one, and it was clearly worth it. She's outdone herself and it is truly magnificent.
