Things I learned at my family dinner...

Kima and Costas are closer than I expected them to be.

Eos has good taste in pretty young things.

Costas really likes his pork-chops.

I am not allowed to crash the Feast of Obligation and mock it for the dog and pony show it is.

Another sketch, this one of a beach, a small fire and a beached boat. Given the moon is in the sky it is probably night time.

His Highness Dominic of Thrax asked me for my aid in training him to train dogs. My prices are too high for him, it seems; and after that disgusting request from His Highness Abbas of Thrax, or the repeated requests from Lord Max of Darkwater of Thrax to discuss political matters and insult his homeland; I really don't think I can do business with them.

They don't haggle. They bluster and shout like wild dogs amid a trained pack. I'm not their thrall and if they want my aid, they'll pay for it as well as any other can.

Speaking of that, the Archscholar paid me five thousand silver and the price of two horses to arrange a guard dog for him. I was more than pleased to do so. She's a lovely thing.

The handful of times that I've been in his company, I've found the sell-sword to be particularly charming. I can see why he's so popular across Arx. I am still not convinced that 'Captain-General' is a real rank though.

Relationship Note on Costas

Master Voducce, Costas, is a charming rogue. If a bit too intense on occasion. We could be friends, someday.

Since it seems to be a popular topic of white journals lately, allow me to share my own secret to avoiding marriage proposals: just to make a point to be out in the middle of the woods, or in some ancient catacomb or ruin, as often as possible. You see, I've found that it's remarkably hard for suitors to find you when you're four days ride from the nearest sign of civilization. Or, alternatively, on a ship off the coast of the Wastes.

(And if they somehow *do* track you that far just to ask, it's probably at least worth listening.)

( From the Rather Tidy Desk of B. Mercier, Steward: )

* Created teas. And a wine. Sent those out to a careful few to critique and tucked the rest away to show the others.

* Sat and took tea with Natalia who is - as always - infinitely pleasant to be around. She liked my mint blend, and I am worried for her. Nearly, very nearly, said too much in regard to personal matters.

* Met the Lord Mydas Nightgold. Potential patron. Potential investor. Potential supporter. Potential potential.

* She accepted the wine. Oh, yes. An orange rose. No, I mentioned that. I had to slip into Aurum Texts in order to check the meaning. Twice.

* Another evening ventured in the Lower Boroughs. Another fruitless afternoon that concludes with me taking space at the end of the bar with a cup of cider. Only adding in the new company of my dear companion, Molly.

*Met with a Prodigal, Crownsworn, by the name of Jeremiah. More potential. I addressed the matter to my elder brother, as he is supposed to be working with him. I think.

*Uncouth, unmannered, unnamed creature. I sent her one of the Guildmaster's chiming, shimmery bracelets.

So I received a marriage proposal today.

It was unexpected. I wasn't half naked so I know the lad was serious. I barely know him but I guess I made a lasting impression. Or, that was what I thought.

I forget, however, that I am of House Velenosa, a noble family of prestige and power and no little bit of wealth. It's not that I'd forgotten, but I did forget what that can mean for some.

Perhaps it's the announcement of that wedding between the Grayson Princess and the Thraxian Prince that's put it into the heads of a few; an unwedded Velenosan higher up in the ranks of the House but not too high. A remarkable prize for many, aye?

I was kind and told him no. He looked surprised. And then offended. And then he remembered that I'd just beaten him into the training center floor and decided that it was best to bow, thank me, and run away.

And then it happened again, in a tavern I stopped at for a quick chat and some lunch.

If this is going to be the norm with all this talk of weddings and House alliances, I'll stop it right now:

I have no intention of marrying for any political reason, so please stop asking.

But I hear my sister is free. You should check with her.

Preparation.
Know how you came to the conflict, and understand the theater in which you will fight. What variables are likely to affect the outcome in such a setting? Determine the probability of victory, given your logistical resources and liabilities. These are weighty matters, even for those steeped in blood. Consider carefully.

Dear oh dear Diary,

Will you forgive me for leaving you to gather dust for so long? I've purchased new ink to honor our reunion, and I have much to tell. After that insufferable intersection, I did indeed go cool down at the Vellichorian Academy, where I met the Archscholar Aldwin Aurum himself. He let me talk and talk, and I told him all about my first love: exploration. To uncover the mysteries of our world and color in unknown lands; such defines my dreams. Well, I best not get off track! I've got a lot to catch you up on, and only a single bottle of ink in arm's reach. I discovered a most extraordinary locale, situated right in the middle of Arx. I speak of The Grotto, and its many heated pools. Gods above, are they a blessing during the heart of winter. I tried to visit as often as I could, which admittedly wasn't nearly as frequent as I'd like. Still, as they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder. I've been getting in touch with other nobles in the city, and its such a relief to realize so many of them are so welcoming. I had my worries, but I think I can officially put said worries to rest. In fact, in recognition of just such a concern resolved, I was awarded a medal by the Lady Regent Dawn Baseborn herself. Oh, by the way, Dawn's now the Regent of the entire Compact! It's an honor just to have met her. Speaking of meetings, I...

Relationship Note on Anze

Anze Redrain was my partner by lot for the Concordal Melee. I have fought along side men of northern blood before. Marcas, as it happens, in the last melee. I have always found northmen to be incredibly solid personalities. In battle, they are gleefully without fear.

The north, I think, produces excellent warriors.

I have yet to determine if they produce equally excellent soldiers.

Speculation aside, I hope Anze and I continue to grow our friendship. And not solely because he has this completely charming desire to unravel the licentious mysteries that weave themselves so utterly around the Lyceum.

When I arrived in Arx, I did not know how long it would be. I knew it would not be a short stay away from the Saiklands, but I did not foresee myself being away from home long enough to warrant more than a room at the inn.

We are approaching summer once again. I've resigned myself to the idea that I should start to think of my time in Arx in less transient terms. Accordingly, with the help of my family and our people, we have raised our home away from home in Southport Square. It is a simple thing, having someplace to call home, someplace you can step out of your room and not walk into a room full of patrons, or raid the kitchen without being chased out by a broom, but it has been a comforting thing none the less.

Now if I can figure out who in that tower snores so loudly that it can be heard through brick walls.
