The Riven Brandy at Smoke and Spirits is very good and everyone in the city should try it!

I say this mostly because, now that I'm married to the store owner, I'm pretty sure the store is half mine now. I don't know much about running a store. That's Calaudrin's job. But I know it's better for the both of us if people buy lots of things.

In less sales-related writing, it was a fine thing to see so many enjoying the liquor from the Twainfort. Summer is when the pears are sweetest, and so is a grand season for brandy and cider and all the other spirits that come from the riverlands. I still miss the place at times, and hope my new family comes to know it soon, but at least I can drink a small part of it.

I do not have many possessions. This stems from a choice I made long, long ago, when I swore my vows and made the Kind Goddess my foremost guiding light. I have tried to live in the fullest spirit of charity, though that is a reflection for another time. The reason for my penning of this journal today is because, as I was puttering about, fussing with this and that as I considered yet further consolidation -- do I still need my travel pack? What use have I for this hook when my years of climbing anything other than a modest flight of stairs are long since gone? So there I was, meticulously rifling through my pack and considering to whom I might offer these things to, when I noticed tucked within a small pocket the edge of worn parchment. Curiosity piqued, I retrieved said parchment as I had absolutely zero recollection of ever having put it there, or what might be written upon its surface. As the mortal mind is ever delighted by mystery and surprise, one can imagine my glee at having discovered such a possibility.

Unfolding it, I must admit that my aforementioned glee faltered considerably, albeit briefly. It was an old artist's sketch of a young lady with whom I once held very dear. Well, I still do hold her dear, though she has long since moved on from this world. In any case, I realized what I felt upon first clapping eyes on that worn out old portrait was a pang. A quickening of the heart. Love, even after all these years. What I understood in that moment, that I had left to gather dust in the back of my mind after all these years, was that it was more than love. I was lucky, really. Because it was love, and friendship, and still something more. There isn't a proper word for it in our language, but I recalled something once said to me by a very wise Prodigal. The best I can describe it is as 'soul friend.' The person you're always happy to speak to at the end of the day, no matter what.

So I wonder, for those who happen to read my public musings, do any of you have such a person in your lives?

Relationship Note on Shae

I must admit, even as a story teller, I'm slightly concerned by the Lady Shae's fascination with wolves and their... habits. At least she tells a compelling tale with a blunt and straightforward method that is to be admired. While the first meeting we had ended in a means that not even I can do justice to in words, I do rather hope she and her family will become regulars at the Raconteur.

I don't know why this heat is making me so tired...
I wanted to make another tea party at the garden, and I haven't got to it yet...

I should announce the Summer tea more, too.

What? Shaving themselves? If the hounds and wolves are shaving themselves, we have bigger problems than scandalous kinfolk.

I do hope you're referring to some of the hounds and wolves you have made part of your family, dear. If your human kin are doing that too often we will likely need to have a word.

Relationship Note on Fianna

I've seen it. It's quite nice.

I notice some men shave all their body-fur. What's the point of that? Doesn't it get cold? And how will you know there's small, potentially poisonous bugs or parasites crawling across your vulnerable, blood-rich flesh if you have no hair on your legs or arms or all over (I know some of my family run the woods naked, and remain completely hairy because they're -smart-)?

Saw your words about Aaron.

Since you don't have a man body, does that mean you might come my way when you want your body covered?

That the Gilded Page has had to restock so quickly speaks to the enormous talent of Mistress Wynna. It is rare to find an author such as she, though I do try to find them, readers. I do try.

Whenever I return to Arx from Whitehold the topic of furs always seems to come to mind. Some in the south believe northerners to lack the subtlyness of the south. Mayhap we are more foreward or obvious, mayhap. Still tradition and custom runs deep and what may seem pointless can have meaning when there is heritage and history behind it. If furs can have meaning than perhaps there is a deeper meaning worth learning in all the tiny things the southern people do... Mayhap if I have free time.

It's a well-kept secret. You have to pry off all the fur and armor and give them a good washing before you can find them in all of that.

On occasion, someone crops up in the community with ideas of lining pockets of quickly, and it's rarely the pockets of everyone but rather the originator of the ideas. Cutting corners on costs and quality, undermining old agreements and techniques to get things done quickly.

This almost never works out well.

Change is inevitable. I welcome change. New ideas, better ways of doing but not at the risk of quality, and definitely not at the risk of cutting people out of well-earned coin.

But now and again, there's a merchant who wants to go with lesser materials, or go with faster, wasteful, or more dangerous ways of getting what they need. Impatient and irresponsible, without manners or sense. It's not often. Quality over quantity. Merchant families with empires in trade get there from being wise and observing the markets, having a keen sense of what will be in demand and what should be sent elsewhere to be sold at a higher price even with shipping costs.

It's not as simple as buy and sell and trade and make. Sometimes it's that spark of extra, to sense the change of tide, the shift in interest. I think at times the clothiers have the best sense at this, and maybe it's from tracking the seasons, having coats ready at the perfect moment, cooler clothing when the wind shifts, oiled leathers when the sky opens up.

The blacksmiths are also very good at such predictions but often it's from a social level. They make the armor and weapons for warrior and guard, a hike in orders can mean a variety of things, depending on bow or blade, leather armor or steel.

And then there's the purchase of supplies, food or drink, for business or pleasure or necessity ...

It's fascinating to watch, to put out the fires as they happen. I delegate much of it and most of the time I'm a mediator. I trust the people I work with to take care of themselves. I'm not their mother.

But they look to me with such respect. It's hard not to feel proud.
