Relationship Note on Asger

I can't believe this man is a Duke. Its like the north lost a bet and now Asger is running things. He's great, I should send him a bottle of wine and see if he'd resort to drinking it....

While the victory of the forces of the compact is clearly a good thing, it does leave a bladeless warrior wondering perhaps what he can do to help now that the fighting seems to be over.

Relationship Note on Zhayla

Mistress Zhayla is someone who doesn't know her own worth, though I hope in the coming months, now that we can all take a collective breath and assess where we stand, she's able to see more of her true self and how important she is to so many. She's like the little strand of salt and sand and pebbles between the water and the land, where treasures hide if you're patient enough to walk there and risk the splash of the water, and the wind coming off the grassy dunes. Every time we meet, I find something new to cherish. She's a living piece of our history but more than that, she's rapidly becoming a piece of my own heart as a dear friend.

Relationship Note on Magpie

I was told I must meet Magpie because he was fun (and I am not very fun) and funny (I am most definitely not funny) and in love with his boat (I'd never set foot outside of Arx). These are all true. When one meets a person who has the qualities one lacks, it seems like a little gift from the world: here is what flourishes in others, and brings such light in ways that I don't, myself. He took me on his ship (I must remember not to call it a boat) The Magpie, and she was beautiful. The city was beautiful too, all lights and rippling colour on the water from a distance. My first time outside of Arx in my life and from that distance I couldn't even tell the scars the siege has left on the city. It was breathtaking. I might be a little in love with his boat (ship) too.

Relationship Note on Cassandra

Archlector Cassandra is exactly as one should imagine the representative of Gloria in Arvum: driven, determined, strong, and committed always to the tenets of honour. The face she turns to the world is the person so often recounted in our old tales of glory, of those heroes who set themselves between the vulnerable and the evils of this world. Beneath that is a person who is thoughtful, hopeful, and I think (if I may be so bold as to judge) tender too. It's that combination, the desire to do and the desire to protect, which makes her so suitable for her role.

The Faith and the people of Arx are well-served to have her as an Archlector.

Relationship Note on Gisele

I met Gisele as much by chance as anything else, and found that we shared friends more and more, and I spent more and more time with her. We've stood together through some incredible things, and I wish I could have stood by her through some of the scary stuff she's gone through.

She invited me for tea -- tea! real tea! I brought biscuits! Or scones. I can't tell the difference. -- with just the two of us and we sat and talked about ... I don't know, everything. She gave me a book! A book of my own! I should show Percephon. He'd be so pleased I own a book now. It's bound in leather and it has silver on it and it looks so expensive that I almost wanted to ask how much she'd usually have sold it for, but I didn't want to drop it out of shock. I cleared away a whole section of shells on my shelf to make room for it.

She has a kindness to her that makes me think of the Marquessa, but Gisele gets just as flustered as I do -- which is honestly kind of reassuring when it feels like no one else in the city is ever fazed by anything. I'm glad I can count her as a friend.

Sanctum. Home.

I have not returned home in a very long time. It is still the city that I love. Yet everywhere I look I see things that remind me of that night.

Then Guard-Captain Morgan found me and scolded me for almost 2 hours straight about my guard detail and not having enough of them and rarely taking them with me. I swear there is no one in all of Arvum with a more powerful, 'I am not upset, I am just disappointed' tone than that man.

It was strangely... very comforting.

I appreciate the sentiment that I have been hearing when meeting with friends and family lately. The siege is over, the Lady General has a chance to rest now! - But it is not so.

I will never rest. My work is far from over.

Relationship Note on Alis

In Sanctum in the great cathedral, the birthplace of the Faith, and the home of people, and before the eyes of the Seraph of Sanctum, my sister was wed. My tactical-sized, rowdy, tomboy of a tormentor, stood there in brilliant white and she was the most lovely woman in all the Oathlands. We were both very young when our mother died, my own memories of her have been fading for a time now, and Alis was only an infant and has none.

But standing there in that hall, I thought of how my tactical-sized sister has become my most trusted general. I thought of how she has lead knights and warriors to bring a monster to heel, how she has begun to reform our light cavalry into a versatile company that can strike across terrains our heavy riders could not even dare attempt. She has stood her ground against Bringer's of Silence, she has shown her prodigy and continues to prove she is one the best tacticians in all of Arvum.

At first I thought maybe I saw my mother in her that day, but as she stood there, so proud, trying so hard (and not entirely succeeding) to maintain sober decorum as a smile kept creeping into her features. That day I realized that Princess Alis Valardin, Champion of the West is not merely carrying on our mother's legacy. She is forging her own entirely.

Relationship Note on Fiachra

When I announced that Prince Fiachra would be the Warden of the West he asked if I was getting back at him for the time he said something that made me spit my tea. Nothing could be further from the truth.

My new brother-in-law is a man who walks with a foot in two different worlds. Both culturally and spiritually. He understands that there is a great importance in understanding, and seeing things from both sides. The job I am asking of him is one that will require making constant judgement calls and often finding himself in a position where there is no best decision, only less bad ones. I think the very man that he is will give him the patience, perspective and wisdom to discharge the office of the Warden of the West with not just honor and justice, but compassion. He will need all three in equal measure, and I have faith he will serve the Oathlands with distinction.

Also it is, maybe just a little bit to get back at him for the time he made me spit my tea.

Relationship Note on Muiryn

One day, when I seek you out and begin a conversation with, "I was hoping you would-" you are going to put me flat to my back with that maul of yours before I can get the rest of the damned words out of my mouth.

But until that day comes, I'll keep asking.

Searching for the unknown comes with a certain responsibility to accept what is found, whether it is what you hoped for, or what you feared most. Before setting out on a hunt, it should be asked whether you're seeking truth or confirmation, whether you can live with the answers whatever they are.

The meaning and even the 'language' of flowers can be a matter of extensive discussion among women of either a certain calibre of breeding or a certain wistfulness of aspiration. Yet I find myself conducting serious research into the qualities, aesthetic properties, and symbolism of plants. Mostly of either flowering or aromatic kind (and ideally of both). Yet all as an exercise in pursuing hope, or in providing means for others to do so in future. I hope that the fruits of my studies will in some small way prove worthy of the sacrifices that have made them possible.

Relationship Note on Caelis

I am very proud of my cousin Caelis and the way she has embraced life in Arx so thoroughly. She has always been a a strong and steadfast woman. I am glad my brother has gifted her the opportunity to not only represent our house in her good works and exemplary behavior, but now to be a Voice for us and speak with that authority. I hope she knows that she has my full support in this as well. We have always stood together and now we speak together as well.

In addition to being named Voice she was also promoted to the position of Admiral. I prefer to do the fighting on land, all things considered. I am glad to have her as Admiral to take care of all the military work done at sea. As she likes to say so frequently, I know she will lead our forces to safe harbors.

I look forward to all the strength and leadership she will show in these new roles.

Greedy Wolf, glutting himself too hastily on his catch of hare, found himself with a bone turned cross-wise in his throat. He hacked and coughed, but could not bring the bone up from his throat.

He went and found Crane, certain that with her long neck and slender bill, she could reach the bone. Wolf told Crane, "I will give you a reward, if only you will pull this bone out for me."

Crane was hesitant. There was no comfort to be found in putting her head down Wolf's throat. But she was a helpful in her nature, so she did as she was asked to do.

The moment Wolf felt the bone release, Wolf backed away and started to prowl off. Crane looked after him and called, "You said there would be a reward!"

Wolf sneered back, "Haven't you got it? I let you take your head from my jaws without snapping it off."

Promotions do not make social events more bearable. On the bright side, this time I actually danced. I shall count that as progress. Next time I might dance AND strike up conversations, won't that be daring? Perhaps I ought to stick to training rings and tournaments.

May your hopes find safe harbors.

New armor! A new sword! It's been a surprisingly good last two weeks for me.

Even working at the Murder and volunteering at soup kitchens seems fun now that I'm not at risk of dying.

Nothing can kill my cheery mood.
