Relationship Note on Alis

Princess Alis was always kind to me.

The time we spent squiring together, well, we kinda fit. And if we hadn't fit, I'm pretty sure the rest of the squires would've made us. I'm barely taller than her. So they dubbed us the small squad and we made sure that our nickname of tiny terrors was well-earned. Flail and polearm, you avoid one you'll fall to the other.

Now we're in Arx, and she's been raised as a Voice of Valardin. Well-deserved, so. But she's still the Princess I knew - and once she heard I was comitting myself to the armoursmith's craft, she reached out to me and offered me patronage.

I accepted immediately, of course. And I hope that I can continue to do her proud.

And you said I didn't get you anything for your birthday. I think I gave you a great gift last year, and another great gift this year!

I'm glad we were able to help him before the lockdown. Kid's got a lot of heart and talent and deserves answers to the past where he can find them.

Knew he'd win against the shav. A sword like that requires a strong hand to be worthy of it. Needs to strengthen his footwork though and bleed less.

Well, I didn't die.

I went with Princess Reese, Leola, Lady Khanne and some others recruited for the effort to search out the blight in the Gray forest. We found it, and signs, throughout the day, of the Nox'alfar playing tricks, having moved some markers Leola had left. The place itself was terribly desolate and quiet, with poor wretched, twisted trees and dirt like ash. I took samples of the soil, though the ones I tested there proved... less than fascinating. The dirt was dead, but there was no sign of a corrupting presence, toxin, or other substance in it. Our conclusion was that these are merely the places Brand traveled, draining the life with his passage, but no more. Beneath a certain depth the soil seemed unaffected, so things could be regrown.

The time it took us to travel there and back, however, was enough for the sun to set and the elves to descend upon us. We ran, or rode rather, which I hated, to flee them, and it was the most terrifying I have ever experienced. The sang riddles and taunts, had set traps for us, and one threw a dead bird at me, knocking me from my horse in fright and surprise, and another threw *spiders* in my face. It's fortunate I didn't pass out then and there. The others managed to... I don't know, keep a perimeter, and Leola helped me on her mount, and we rode off, though they showered us with arrows as we fled. I think everyone was hit in some way or another, myself in the hand, and Leola in her back. I've been tending to it, and it seems as though it will heal with full function, though you will forgive me if my handwriting is sloppy for this entry.

Slowly, I continue to fill the reference shelves at the Society of Explorers. A four volume history of what we've managed to piece together of the elven nations and their past. A reference on modern Nox'alfar diplomacy. A study of reincarnation. I hope to finish a guide to Eurus and some of the lands beyond, soon.

And yet I swear my list keeps growing. All the things I /should/ record for other explorers. The things necessary to give context to what we might find out there. I sometimes wonder if what I'll be remembered for generations from now -- if I'm remembered at all -- isn't my explorations, but rather all these tomes I keep taking to poor Sister Gisele to illuminate and bind.

And still, the number of topics on which I could write feels like it grows every passing day. (Admittedly, the percentage of those with no ominous implications also seems to shrink...)

I really do not think my wardrobe is that impressive. If it was so grand, I would not struggle finding something wear for special occasions.

What I am about to write should in no way be considered a detraction or slight to those who have received lauding and praise for their recent acts. If anything it is to add to this appreciation as an offering to the many who have not yet received such grace or recognition.

To those who quietly served, fought, supported and scarified without grand notice, what you have graciously given to all of us is not what is engraved in stone monuments, issued in ornate medals, or offered at elegant parties with grand speeches. Your generous gifts are what is woven into the fabric of our city and the lives of others.

Gratitude.

For the record, I actually am looking forward to gallivanting around the bay on some sort of semi-inadvisable fishing/drinking trip with everyone else you've promised a boat ride to at Some Future Point.

Maybe now that you're done funding bird sanctuaries you can get to that next!

The magpie exhibit has been built exceptionally fast!
They're the first birds to move into the aviary at the menagerie, which is still under construction.
This is exciting! Thank you Magpie Grayhope!

I have made animal masks for the upcoming Mask. They are fun to make.

Currently I am working on a white pearlescent owl mask. It not finished yet. It will be my finest mask yet. But it is tons of work! When i am finished it will go in my shop.

My shop features at the moment silk dresses, silk cloaks, silk slippers, wool slippers, wool cloaks, linen dresses, masks, bloomers, thigh highs, wood gloves lined with fur for warmth, meads (including a new flavor) and flowers - lots of flowers. I like flowers.

It is more fun to make what I want and put that in my shop. I think it is freeing to the artist to craft and make away as they so desire.

I have planned to (hopefully soon) put up bathing smocks, fur lined winter boots and male tunics and trousers. My men clothing sales out quickly, but I want get more up. They I want some autumnal colored clothing up and some woolen dresses for the colder months. We will see. It is a lot I need to make. I need to find more help for my shop.

Although Tallius, Leta, Merek and even Princess Valencia have helped in my shop. Can you imagine that a princess helping to make clothing? It is true!

A gentle and beautiful princess whom I met in a garden. She is working to alleviate the suffering of refugees and I have agreed to help her by writing home for aid and for speaking to those merchants with whom I hold sway in Arx. She wishes to help me throw a part to introduce myself to the movers and shakers of Arx.

Relationship Note on Edward

A member of one of the vassal houses to Thrax, I was worried when I encountered this lord. In response, he was courteous, affable, and interested in our family history. And upon learning that we were descended from escaped thralls, he told me of a project overseen by Dame Coldrain: one that would see an island in The Mourning Isles given to former thralls to rule themselves.

The Archlector of Skald and I seem, at first glance, to be kindred spirits, and his joy and humor put me at ease in a time when I needed it badly. I look forward to exploring a friendship with the man, and to learn more of the Lost God of First Choices from the archlector.

I have arrived in Arx.

Though I had hoped to travel with the rest of my family, local matters have monopolized their time. So, I find myself a kind of advance scout, taking the pulse of the city, learning of its troubles and glories, meeting its denizens and those who broker for power in its halls.

Marquessa Deepwood has been kind enough to open the doors of her estate to me, and though I have not encountered her here yet in the flesh, I find myself grateful that there is a friendly presence somewhere nearby, perhaps just out of sight. In the meanwhile I have set about exploring, and those explorations have already yielded some surprises.

First, a new friend in the form of the archlector of Skald. Second, a vassal of Thrax who seems interested in the self-governance of thralls. Third, a princess with a mind for refugees. Perhaps, sensing I am a kind of refugee myself, she has shown an interest in helping me to throw a party to celebrate my arrival and introduce me to people of import.

It is all rather frightening. But then, that is why I am here.

Fortunately, it would seem there are familiar ways to face my fears here in plenty. Arx is not far from the ocean, and there is river rafting, climbing, and a rather dangerous forest all within reach. I suspect, too, that there are greater dangers than all of these still hidden from me, terrible tests.

I welcome them.
