Last night's quickly gathered party seemed quite a success. A small gathering, with only a smattering of invited but fun nonetheless. Lady Peri Seliki was seen off to the fleet with oysters and rum and gave everyone a proper class on how to shuck them! With only a single injury by way of Lady Kenna Whitehawk. Lord Wash Kennex and Lady Catalana even stopped by!

It's been a while since I've written a proper journal entry, I've been busy lately, so here we go!

I've had a few fights lately. Against Prince Luca, against Orathy, one an honor duel and another just for entertainment. Both were rather fun and I won both. Did I write about the battle with Prince Luca? I can't even remember. I have to get a gift for Orathy for cutting him upon the rear.

I got Princess Cadenza a rubicund cutlass, she loves it, and has been praticing with it whenever she gets the chance. I'm glad she loves her gift! Got her some other gifts as well, but now I've been blowing a lot of money, money I was hoping to get a diamondplate dagger with. Opps! Guess I gotta start saving up again.

The war is coming up. I know what I'll be doing. I hope it is useful. I hope I don't die. I hope Cadenza doesn't die ether. Maybe selfish of me, with plenty of people going to die, but I had my freedom taken from me for 9 years, so I can a little selfish, right?

Relationship Note on Saya

I am now the proud owner of one of Mistress Saya's works. A linen tunic sewn with blue-green leaves, of beautiful make. It puts me in mind of the Gray Forest, and the colors that are made when the sun reflects through the leaves and plays off the water. As I prepare to march to war, I am holding tight to the moments when I don't need to armor myself from the blows of foes, but may wear something light and pretty that puts me in mind of growth, rather than destruction.

How thankful I am for Limerance for having touched my life in such a way. My bonds upon arriving in a city are so strong that it is as though I have existed here all along. The fresh successes of kin and friends swell my heart as if they are my own. Lord Michael's appointment as General to Bisland forces and his aspirations as a budding fashion designer both thrill and frighten me. Little Prince Asharion's arrival bodes well for our optimistic future, for I can think of no cousin of mine more accomplished than his father. Let me not forget Marquessa Samantha, whom amidst her ever-growing list of duties found time to scribe a book on subjects of most concern to me. She's unknowingly helped replenish the personal collection I left behind at Pridehall. To my surprise, Arx has filled me with warmth and purpose.

Each and every day there has been so much to do -- yet at the end of the day, there is even more. It is as though we are being assaulted from all fronts. Then again, when do dangers wait to make their timing convenient?

Relationship Note on Cadenza

Thank you for your diligent work with the Society of Explorers. Last night's silent auction went off without a hitch. I am confident in my decision to have selected you as First Seeker, and know that together we will do many wonderful things. I am certain that Safiyyah will love the little carved dragon figurine when I present it to her. It will go very nicely with her dragon plushie.

I arrived only a hand full of days ago to the city and am still finding my feet. At least, I can say this:

1. My sister must be a very busy woman. I can't find her anywhere!
2. The Navegants' hospitality is second to none.
3. The Training Center is /the/ place to be to meet a friendly face or two.
4. It's nice having family.

Today I write these in my journal, so that I may have a reference in a few years time to look back on. I would hate to forget these gems that may very well elicit exasperated sighs from my offspring.

Why did the scarecrow win an award?
Because he was outstanding in his field.

What do you call someone with no body and no nose?
Nobody knows.

Our wedding was so beautiful, even our cake was in tiers.

How many apples grow on a tree?
All of them.

My sleep has been plagued by nightmares since speaking with the would-be assassin of the Keaton Countess. I don't believe that you can summon a wish-granting demon by smearing ash and woman's blood over your face, but you probably think you can after you eat a bunch of crazy mushrooms. I admit that after the interrogation was over, I took the madman's book back to my room and locked it in a trunk, then spent a sleepless night imagining creatures and knives emerging from the darkness. But I believe the book is only a book, as much a work of fiction as those flowery romances, though its content makes for decidedly less pleasant bedtime reading.

Nia will be a year old in less than a month, and she's trying to learn how to walk. She pulls herself up, lets go, steps and then tumbles down. And when the nurse tries to go to her side, the little minx yells, "NO!" As if to tell the woman that she does not want her help. Her nurse and I have tries to get that girl to walk more on the balls of her feet but she keeps trying to do it on her tippy toes. It's like she's planning for the next step before she's even ready.

I hope I get to see her success before I must rush off to battle. And if I'm not there for her first birthday party, I hope that little warrior understands that her mother is fighting so she has a future.

I am paying handsomely for books. All books. Even the ones on Economics or flowery romance.

Or a romance about economics and diplomacy eloping.

I've been spending more time pouring over books and maps than in the sparring ring. When one thinks of war, rarely do they think about the amount of planning that goes into it. Before the first soldier marches onto the field. Before the first arrow that an archer draws back. Before the siege engine rolls into place. It's all played out on the map with figures. Calculations are made. Decisions are weighed. It's these behind the scenes activities that lead to success or failure.

There is something about spring time. Even as the leaving of the troops rolls steadily forward, the growing warmth in the air, blooming flowers, and bees starting their busy work is a sign of hope.

Someone spoke to me about the importance of theology recently and I thought it would be good if I did some work on the whites. The whites are meant to show what we are and who we are in this time. Well I thought about it a long time and I thought it beneficial to write about what my day was like today so scholars of the future have a very accurate picture of what time is like right now.

For breakfast I had bacon and eggs. I had some milk. I had a little ale after.

For lunch I had beef stew, I had two flagons of some sort of alcohol I forget what.

(It goes on and on including only the most tedious parts of the day including how much he ate of each meal, how many bowel movements he had, what time he felt sleepy, what time he actually left to write this white, and then a note on how he predicts the rest of the day to go.)
