Cassowary war birds of shock and fear. That is all.

I got to stretch my legs on a patrol with some explorers on a training exercise. I hadn't realized how much I desperately miss being in the thick of things. It is time to find worthwhile endeavors for these idle hands.

I am perpetually behind on the happenings of Arvum. The more I learn the more lost I am. At least I have chosen a direction to pursue. I will study the tactics and strategies of ever battle that history remembers. That ought to keep me plenty busy.

Dear diary,

Today we caught up a bit with Ilira, and then bandits. We made new friends.

Dear monster under the bed,

I don't know which child-hating SOB told me about you. But I tell you this, now: I've seen Raja in action and my legs are going to dangle off the side of the bed without so much as a whisper of fear. Or else.

Come dear, take a seat, and let me tell you what is true

Hues are the truest colors to be invoked when one speaks of colors like blue

When mixed with white it becomes a tone, with properties strange and new

Blue and white in these proportions yield periwinkle, perfectly balanced between red, violet and its mother hue

Sometimes, life - or, at least, my life - has a tendency to punch you in the jaw, and then offer you a drink. I don't know how to describe the past two weeks. Maybe an ongoing barfight.

Did a little bandit hunting today, in aid of the Grayson barons a few hours outside of the city.

Sure, not strictly my business, but it's always right to lend a hand when you can, and it's not like I had anything pressing to do.

May have also managed to make a friend. A scary stabby friend, but a friend none the less.

Though late for the horse race put on by my sister and Duke Martino Malvici, I was thrilled by the spectacle itself. I hope to see more of such shows of daring equestrian ability and the Marquessa's choice of stylish headwear.

Sometimes I get what I think is a grandly clever idea and go with it. I can often tell by Rigby's expression if it may actually be clever or not, but go with it anyhow.

Sometimes help comes from unexpected directions. And sometimes one gives help almost instinctively. Somehow it all seems to balance out in the end.

Every morning I awaken before dawn, throat aching from what must be a night's worth of screams. But when I try to catch glimpses of my dreams, I stumble and come up blank.

Why do they haunt me now of all times?

I appreciate that the dreams of a nobody from an oft-ill-thought family are tedious to read through, but writing is just another form of prayer. At least there's peace in this.

I had the most pleasant time recently when joining a hunting party in the Crownlands. To be outdoors all day, away from the constraints of the city, was a true joy. I could also not have asked for better company; though we had our missteps, we came together in the end to enjoy a successful hunt.

It has been too long since I had a day like this and I am reminded of how lively I feel in the woods, running.

On The Way Home

I saw you, late last night or early this morning, making our respective ways home from an evening.

You looked wonderful. Your costumier-- well, I would recognize you anywhere.

You looked tired.

I hesitated to say hello. I wanted to ask if you were feeling well. You did the polite thing and kept walking.

Later I will make this into a joke for The Salon. Something trivial to laugh about and forget. Witty remarks, like sheets, are better with the right company.

I spoke at length today on the differences between drape and silhouette.

Such minor things, to some. And yet, our most powerful images are invoked via silhouette; and who wants clothing with no drape?

In this weather?

If I never see the Everwinter again, I will be a happy person. What sane person wants to live in so many snow tundras and snowy mountains and things filled with ice? I am every so glad to be back one on my VERY WARM house. I've been home for days and I still find myself freezing in my bed at night, even though the blankets are warm. Perhaps I shall take to the Great Hall and sleep by the fire some evenings to see if that helps.
