The Prince of Maelstrom. He's very upright and imposing, as he should be, and the man is stingier with a compliment than a widow with her pursestrings - HAHA. Oh, but it sucks to be poor. A handsome and affable fellow that has recently returned to Arx from travels abroad - as a sellsword. Not the most upstanding of professions, but then, am I not an actress? We have begun a...social relationship, of sorts. We see each other, on occasion. It's not entirely unpleasant.

Relationship Note on Edain
His father would be proud of his fighting prowess. I don't know His Grace well, but he seems like a honorable man, that perhaps could use a night or two out in the Lyceum. When it comes to battle, however, he is a true warrior. I faced him in a Rite of Gloria, where we were very evenly match, and yet I was forced to yield in the end. I feel no shame in having done so either, Edain's skill is without question.

Another large Redrain cousin. He has moments of genuine heartfelt connection, other times I want to bash his skull in. All in all, he trusts and confides in me and I can't take that lightly. I can rely on him in a pinch if need be.

A Captain in Redrain service, under Duke Vercyn's command. A burly type with a history. I think he has lost family dear to him, maybe a child. He wears a necklace with a pendant that looks like it was made by one. A reliable soldier and man, but with the gruff and terse humor one would expect from a Northern Soldier. Good drinking buddy.

Relationship Note on Niccolo
Gravitas. That is what I think when I see Duke Niccolo. I don't think I have met anyone so unflappable. A unicorn could burst out of man's stomach and vomit up an army of small unicorn minions, and I am convinced that the Duke would act as if he expect that would happen all along and ask them to bring him a goblet of wine. He is also an amazing fighter. He invited me to observe the Ritual of Gloria with him. He may have gracious asked for quarter after I landed some lucky hits, but make no mistake, he beat me pillar to post for what whole bout.

Took first in the marathon and swim and second in the shotput. Am pleased I was able to represent my house well, though it may be a matter of philosophy and long limbs. We Blackrams seldom rush, but when we set to do things it is usually at the jog or at the double quick. Victus Thrax continues to be a powerful physical and social presence, his uncle was wise to strengthen the blood of his house with that one. Talen Artiglio continues to be...colorful in his tactics, though I do not judge him nearly as often as other Valardin houses. After all, Blackram tales often immortalize the peasant trickster and the hedge knight who must save his lord from the foibles of his own virtue. If he were taller, perhaps I might even ask for a test of his blood to make sure he is not a distant cousin.

Relationship Note on Gareth
There's only so much that Fergus is certain he can take of being around this Inquisitor who looks as if his mother tried to cook his face for a meal during lean times. Despite this, Gareth seems to be everywhere that Fergus is, and this puts him on edge, wondering as to whether the man is eyeing him for some inquisition. Fergus may have to keep a look out for the man to be certain nothing is going down.

Relationship Note on Victus
He won the Decathalon, which no one should have doubted. I'm not sure what he'll do with the trophies, perhaps I'll ask if he wants one displayed in the library. He'll say no, but I may try to persuade him. What's important is not that he won, but that he unlike some others competed with more than simply winning in mind.

Apparently the guys appreciate the incredibly generic bookcase I have crafted them. Next task? To get them to write in the books. I suspect writing up a general Code of Conduct may be in order, but such an assignment may be better left to the higher-ups than to upjumped commoners like me. Still, at least they now have somewhere to put their sordid romance novels instead of leaving them open for all curious eyes to see; some things are better left unknown.
Maybe the barracks will appreciate a card table, too. Something to look into.
The week has been unexpectedly busy. I was unable to keep my commitments to the Decathlon so I had to drop out of most of my matches and it appears Grayson had no other entrants (slightly disappointing in itself but we're a busy lot as of late). I had met with Mistress Eithne to discuss armor designs but we both needed to cut the engagement short - and I'm STILL not entirely sure what I want. Perhaps something Griffon-themed? But would that make all the actual Graysons jealous? Perhaps something more unique and individualized? Just how unique can armor really get and still be practical?
I also need to visit Master Enzo's shop and see about those insignias, but now I should have ample funds for it. Business at the shop has been good. I should learn how to make larger pieces of furniture soon so it can keep coming.

Second to only Lord Victus Thrax in the overall leader boards, Talen's own performance during the Golden Decathlon hosted by House Pravus in 1004 AR came more as an obligation from being the Sword of Velenosa than any real desire. In the bracketed events, the southerner took steel trophies in single combat, wrestling and the joust. It is said that he didn't even so much as cheat once-- but his willingness to do so if remains undiminished, in truth.

I wanted to smack the shit out of her at one point. Now...I can't help but like her. She's too helpful. It's practically unfair. She's as stubborn as any Redrain could ever expect to be; with hair like hers, it would be easy for someone to assume. She's been with the family a long time though...and she's as loyal as I could ever wish for. Damn it. I meant for this log to be about how she broke my bottle of whiskey. Oh well.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed hosting...anything. The planning, coordinating, perfecting till everything goes smoothly. Working with merchants, vendors, crafters, entertainment, knowing that when the day comes there will be no surprises. Lady Viviana honored me when she asked if I would host the first day of the Decathlon, and there was never any hesitation on my part when I accepted the invitation. I may never have been allowed to go on grand adventures sailing around the Mourning Isles and beyond, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the sea like any other Thraxian born, and the chance to host any events pertaining to the water is something that I plan on repeating.

He's direct, forward, and certainly, more than a little blunt in behavior. I've hardly met a person in this city that I liked more immediately, even if I did ask him to blink for one really long second and let me step on his guard's face. The squinty little young one who was eyeing me. Yea, I haven't forgotten you. Victus though, we had some fun. A good ol' Redrain Dine and Duel. The maids probably were fanning themselves from watching us long into the night.

The weight he bears is so much more poignant when one stops to consider that in a better world, a fairer world, he never would have had to bear it at all. In the face of so much loss, a man that isn't allowed to give himself over to mourning must find the source of his strength, and gather it close by whatever means necessary. Would that Alis and I could distract him so easily now as when we were children.

This was the first Decathlon Event where someone wore my favor during one of the matches. It was so thrilling to watch Master Talen Artiglio go hand to hand with Admiral Alrec Magaldi while wearing my ruby ring. It was the perfect accompaniment for a fight if I do say so myself. Even the Admiral could not help but admire the craftsmanship. While my champion did not win, he fought hard and valiantly. Kudos to him for staying in the fight as long as he did and congratulations to Admiral Magaldi for putting up such a wonderful fight.
