What a fantastic time to be alive. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming. A lovely time for making a lot of money.

Relationship Note on Leo

Duke Leo Fidante is headstrong, which is a nice way of saying he's a bit of an asshole. Yet, if he is an asshole, he is nevertheless an asshole dedicated to the protection of the Lyceum, and I could not fault any man for that -- headstrong, or otherwise. He has cloaked himself in honor, and sworn himself to duty. He would give his life for the people of Tor. I could ask no more of Duke Fidante -- yet I may still.

It has been an eventful week. So much blood, so much slaughter.

It's not going to get better.

No. It's going to get worse. But at least going forward, we are organizing.

Relationship Note on Edain

You came to me, when I first arrived in Arx, and you asked me to rebuild the burnt bridges between the Lyceum and the Oathlands. I thought you were naive. I thought you were a fool. So much hate, I thought, could not be undone.

Now I am the one undone, my world changed. Now, anything seems possible. I do not know if we can build those bridges, Edain, but we will try. For the the sake of our people, and the Compact we all serve, we will try.

You are my Light. You are probably also still a fool.

Sometimes you have to be patient and let the foul wind run its course.

Sometimes you should steer into the wind and reinforce your bow.

Other times you should just sit at home and not bother with any wind at all.

Foul winds always come and go. In the Salt they usually don't last long when it comes time for war. These things sort themselves out.

The body count has increased to hundreds in the last month. I feel like I may be slaughtering more people by sitting in Arx and going out to reave than by spending the seasons out in the Salt.

I suppose this speaks more to current circumstances than anything else.

At least it pays well, still...

It has been quite some time since I've taken up my quill and a piece of parchment to write a journal for myself, rather than transcribing the wishes and thoughts of others who come to an archivist for their own journals. Some might call the duties of a scholar rather droll, or to commit one's self to transcribing what we discover to parchment with ink and quill, rather than to wield a sword and take up a life of exhilaration on the front lines of battle.

To those that have that opinion, I do not blame you. I simply quote to you the words of my dearest Papa, who has been the catalyst of my success during my trials to become a disciple worthy of serving Vellichor: Without the archives, what do we have?

We have no past, and no future. The access to the archives is a key of wonders and miracles, glimpses into other lives, religions, experiences, the hopes and dreams and strivings of all lives, and it is this key that opens our eyes and hearts to the world beyond our front doors, that is one of our best hopes against tyranny, xenophobia, hopelessness, despire, anarchy, and ignorance.

I hear that Prodigals are growing in number within Arx. I am pleased, but (naturally, given my tendency to over-think matters, most especially good news), I cannot help but wonder quite what might lie behind these reports. Are there truly more who have made the journey here? If so, it might speak to the severity of the assorted crises facing the Compact. Or were most already present, but now feel better-able to dress and speak as they feel themselves to truly be? That might speak rather more to a growing acceptance within the Compact, which I think is all the more needed in these troubled times.

Relationship Note on Eirene

We are both of an age in which the formative years of our lives were filled with the war between Tor and Southport. A decade and more later, we worked together with others against a threat that menaced a city neither of us called home. But to a cause. To a purpose.

I cannot say that we will always see eye-to-eye on matters, but that we speak? That we find ground common enough to us both that we can come to an accord? I respect this medic and commander of House Malvici.

I sat down with Count Maximilian at his keep in Arx because if there is anyone who can get the job done is him and his Darkwater Watch. The man served with Victus but back then he was just a boy and I regret not paying more attention to him because the result of his experience and skill is a Count who anwsers to no one and with his company, the Black Mountain, he is able to move assets at an incredible pace. Something that I strongly appreciate concerning my business is always fighting against time. Through him, I made contact with Lord Darrow - the Knight of Sorrow and a man who just recently had sailed alongside Prince Abbas. Lord Darrow did not hesitate to give me his assistance. The same can be said about Inquisitor Halsim. The man is a genious when it comes to operations and I hope to learn allot from working with him. Master Felix is another great example of what Thrax has to offer. Not only is he a master of his craft but his influence extends to nothing short of artists when it comes to shipbuilding. This fellow he reccomended and saw moved to Escuma for the construction of my ship has been great to work with and I feel that will continue to be the case.

Relationship Note on Valkieri

It can often be a strange thing, to find yourself born of a culture like ours and yet seek some commonality, some space where the darker shades of the heritage we were raised in does not color every word or gesture. To sit and speak with a peer and know that this day, at least, I need not fear an unfamiliar flavor in my drink? It brings to mind a sentiment of Duke Rubino's that I will very much carry forward with me as I venture further down this path: A dagger in the back marks a fool, a dagger that never comes marks the wise.

May wisdom touch the road I walk.

Ah--that was unexpected. Pleasing, but unexpected. A Princess of the ruling House--and a Minister--putting my paper in her journals? Pleasing. Unexpected, but pleasing.

I am exceedingly grateful and content in that; an accomplishment. Thank you, Princess-and-Minister Lark Grayson.

Relationship Note on Esera

When I came to the city of Arx, I had many prejudices that colored my judgements of people. Of no one was this more true than Grand Duchess Esera Velenosa. The rivalry between our families is old, and brutal and I thought I knew all I needed to know. I have come to learn that I was wrong.

I have learned that the Grand Duchess is a woman with a boundless love for her people and a peerless devotion to the compact. She is someone I will be proud to stand beside to defend the Compact when that day comes. Thank you. Thank for teaching me I have much left to learn about the world.

Met with Lady Cordelia of Grimhall. A strange situation the lady has on her hands. Grimhall's head, Duke Eugine passed away leaving her as voice of the house. Her father is currently handling house business in the absent of a duke... But I strongly believe Lady Cordelia has an opportunity here to grab that ship by the helm and show her father what her uncle saw in her. Our first meeting, the Lady had the disposition to negotiate our deals and while she is still young and has a thing or two to learn, her business proposals for the benefit of Grimhall were not out of the field and were circumstances different, in terms of other important things to focus on, I could see myself investing in Grimhall. They are profitable and with allot of business emerging from Grihem's Point that could benefit my increasing enterprise. Never the less, after that meeting where my project received her support I felt it imperative to promise to the voice of Grimhall that I support all business emerging Grihem's Point.

A paper has been recently published that might be of note to the socially conscious and/or politically inclined entitled 'The Progressive Progress of Princess Lark Grayson's Civil Development Ministry.' It is written in a precise, flowing, almost delicate hand, and attributed to one 'Jeremiah Arvani,' dated 7/10/1005 AR. Despite the sometimes-dry topic of law and economics, the twenty-page paper is easily readable, breaking down the activities, intents, and means of the Ministry of Civil Development. it dispenses of titles after the first introduction and retrospective on the Princess, thereafter referring to her as 'the Minister.' 'The very existence of the Ministry was in doubt by some; under another lead, perhaps, the organization might have done more harm than good, as sometimes charitable endeavors to; the Minister has effectively proven through leadership that any such criticisms were unfounded. The Crown and the Minister and the Compact are all three well-represented by the designed policies, and meaningful work is already underway.'

The first five pages are devoted to the creation of the Ministry and the Minister's history, in near-equal measure; after, policy is examined on both a legal and economic standpoint, consuming the next ten pages. Where there is praise, it is not ubiquitous, and where there is need for reform, it is gentle and guiding rather than scathing, the author's position one of subtle change rather than sweeping revolution.

The final five pages are devoted to the future--where the Ministry may develop, what organizations it might need--supposition and conjecture, or perhaps advice, both concerning a bright future and in the face of economic downturn or war.

Met with Count Quirin, a man who in his youth participated in countless battles towards the shav but now takes command in Arx as it happens to all generals. That is not say that his ability wanes. Escuma, one of our best wood suppliers meets all expectation in the trade. The island is safe, rich, and beautiful. Through his hard work he has ensured his house's place among the Thrax for generations to come. We enjoyed a meal at the Ebb and Flow. Our conversations were to point which I appreciated. He supports my project and I of course support all business coming from Escuma. I do hope business between us continues.

I remember you.

You taught me what it meant to be a man. You taught me to seek respect through actions not words. You showed me that true loyalty came not by demanding it, but by offering your own loyalty first. You reminded me that family should always come first. You taught me that family was far more than blood - that it extended to the whole North, as it should.

I remember you. I remember everything you've taught me, everything you ever said. I only hope that I practice it well.
