Duty calls and I must answer. I will be in command of Ashford's troops in the coming campaign. I will have to finish my history of the Queen of Games another time.

I do not write this to be reassuring, but the planning and coordination stage is going more smoothly than I expected. Gabriel Bisland is Gabriel Bisland, and the Duke can rally his troops. No one was at each other's throats. It's rather heartening.

I feel sorry for my late nephew, Duke Barton. Thank you for your condolences. But Harlan is being quite ducal so far. I expect he'll do well.

In just a few short hours, I will be married. Everyone in the house is running around like they have lost their minds, for all that most everything was well in place yesterday. I should probably start getting dressed, soon. It has grown to be a larger crowd than I had hoped for, but I should not be particularly surprised. I had hoped to get away with something tiny, but it is what it is. We will endure it, and then it will be done.

Relationship Note on Rymarr

It can be exceptionally unnerving to have one of the King's Own grace your doorway. Or darken it - I suppose it would depend on the nature of the visit. In this case, however, Sir Rymarr Lyonesse had been invited to come by, so I wasn't concerned. Much. The King's Own are a powerful group and one I'd not hope to cross. But I digress, as usual.

He had inquired about something for Judge (an impressive canine bred by Sir Rymarr's family) that I find myself very cautiously fond of. Today was a try-on day for a leash of sorts I've been working on. Were I not from the Oathlands myself, his demeanor might seem daunting. But? I am from the Oathlands. I am glad we had occasion to speak and were able to also make a bit of progress on this project. There are a few things I yet need to tweak, I think, but I'm hopeful this will turn out well.

[Prince Dominic Thrax arrived to submit an entry into the reflection but the meeting was cut short because the prince could not stop laughing when asked about his opinion on current affairs. After minutes, he settles down, catching his breath.] Shit, I do not even know where to start. One thing I do know for sure is that we are in trying times. An axial age.

Relationship Note on Tobias

Things are picking up. Cousin Tobias was meeting with a poised lady at the barracks area. Her and her family have concerns in the Lower Boroughs and would like our help in corralling a few out of control new crime lords in the area, it seems. Big planning meeting in a few days with Prince Edain.

I think I'm starting to get used to Arx, sort of, but I'll never get used to how many nobles there are here, and the way they say things like 'oh you should just get a horse and learn to ride it'. Or 'you should just go have tea with the Legate'. Or 'come have dinner with the Marquessa and the First Captain of the King's Own and the daughter of Duke Bisland that guy who used to be regent by the way'.

AHHHH.

Or the way my training buddies will turn around and start talking about serious war council things that they have to go do. It sounds like things are getting serious out there. I've been spending everything I have on training, when I can find someone to help. The Marquessa has told me that my place is with her, but -- I want to be out there.

None of the heroes in any of the stories got to BE heroes by staying at home and watching things happen to other people. We're facing monsters. Sounds like they need slaying. But then I think about how I'd feel if something did happen back here when I was gone, and I don't know. Where can I do the most good?

Relationship Note on Freja

Met an interesting princess at the Training Grounds. A scout - and a very capable one, if what I hear is correct. We talked about coming to noble status late in life, and we have tentative plans to perhaps go out on a mission at some point. It would be nice to pick up more tips about wilderness scouting; while I feel capable I know I don't have the fifteen years I had as an Iron Guard.

Met with his Grace this week in passing at the Training Grounds. He was leaving and pointed with a grunt at my tabard - indicating I should leave the sell swords. I believe him and cousin Tobias are in quite the war currently, and who knows how that is going to affect family dinners. Still, I would like to get to know my uncle some more, since my father has since passed on.

Things seem to be seeing down, slowly.
Though they are still confusing.

And I don't think I've been told before that I should get married... At least never as many times like the last days...

The Count made me his Voice. Scratch off one thing from the 'will probably never happen' list.

We'll see how this goes.

The Festival of Commons, for the peers of the realm to play at a life without their great burdens and for the common people to forget those to whom they are sworn. A delightful thing, yet it has me longing for a true masquerade. How long since we all played at masks? Much too long.

Relationship Note on Donella

Hers is not a shadow that drowns and obscures; it is one that has risen tall to blanket me, protect me in its cloak. When I see her tiring from all of the weight upon her, I feel my love grow fierce in my chest, but I never doubt. There is no one person I admire more than my sister.

Relationship Note on Margot

It was an awkward embrace, but I felt it; there was a sisterly compassion shared, there. It's a nightmare, what's happened to our families, how that's come to shape the entireity of our persons, both of us. Despite so much darkness in Arvum, in Arx, our home, I have never felt so unified and strong with my beloved people.

Relationship Note on Darren

It was the first I'd met him, and I struggled worse than usual with keeping the dialogue appropriate for our stations. But the jests kept spilling from my lips, and he was good of nature. One might say he asked for it. Someone I wouldn't mind trading quips with, and while he insisted it wasn't a misuse of his time, I can't imagine he doesn't have a thousand actually important things to tend to. I am not, in the least, envious.

Eagle is a proud bird. None would dispute Eagle's prowess at the hunt, how high it might soar, or how beautiful it shone under the sun. Eagle did not attend its weaknesses. It did not like to think that it could not see all from its vantage so high in the sky; that there might be things hidden from it, that it could be taken for fool, seemed impossible.

Eagle took the world for what it saw the world to be. When Deer and Bear and Rat warned of the sly Hunter, Eagle scoffed. Eagle was to clever to be taken by the Hunter, bound to the ground. Eagle underestimated the Hunter. Eagle did not think anything of a trade with the wayward traveler that wanted only a few of the fine feathers for a trade of fish; an easy meal for what seemed such a small trade.

Some days later, Eagle was riding the warm winds of the cliffs when it heard the whistle of an arrow from the shadows. It struck Eagle through the chest, and Eagle fell to the craigy ledges. As its life bled out across the stone, it looked to the arrow, and found it fletched with its own feathers.

Relationship Note on Mirari

It may not be altogether big news for many people, but last night I became a patron, for the first time. A step above getting a puppy, but certainly not on the level of infant, either.

I jest. Sort of.

I'm proud to patron Mirari Whisper. She's a remarkable woman.

My first conversation with a Mirrormask, it seems she is intelligent, charming and altogether persuasive when it comes to sharing her beliefs with others. I am also fairly convinced that makes her all the more dangerous but that does not mean I cannot agree with Princess Isolde on a great many things which do not touch upon religion. This is definitely something to speak to Cassandra about.
