I've been trying to write songs again, seeing as I can't find any written that talk of the things I want to talk about. I've been reading too, or trying to, books of poems and such. I'm no good with words yet, there's plenty I don't know. But there's some words I like, I'm finding, and I aim to use them in a poem or another. When this is over, if I've hands to write or a tongue to say them to a scholar who'll write them for me.
It's a time for wonders, and maybe some day I'll be good enough and know the proper words to sing of it.
But I just need the one word for the song I'm trying to write now. But I fear it's not much of a poem if I just repeat it again and again.

I wonder, sometimes, if I let myself by lead in too many directions in my studies. If I have tried too hard to follow up on /everything/ that comes across my path, and maybe overlooked the things I should be looking into. Topics closer to home in many ways, things that are otherwise wholly ignored.
And yet... I can't bring myself to look into family histories or anything similar, not right now. Or into any of the things that my own curiosity draws me towards. I certainly can't bring myself to head out on expeditions again. Not while there are so many threats facing Arvum. (And I do mean Arvum; this is not a problem solely for the Compact, but a problem for all of humanity on this continent. Perhaps beyond.)
And so I stay here, in the walls, chasing whatever the latest epiphany, hint, or even vague theory is that seems likely to give us just one more edge in this fight.
Vellichor grant that it's enough...

Okay. Fine.
/Some people/ keep talking about this idea that I /cursed at Legate Orazio/ during my own anointing to become Godsworn. Which -- okay, that's /technically correct/, but it's a gross oversimplification of the matter. The truth is that my very dear and close friend thought it was a wonderful idea to introduce brand new vows for the Lost Gods recently returned to the Pantheon during my anointing. What a great idea! Obviously we need new vows for them to include in the ceremony.
Of course, what my very kind and good-hearted friend failed to do was warn me ahead of time.
So when I said "Fuck you" to Legate Orazio, I didn't really /mean/ it. Like that. What I really meant was more along the lines of "Holy gods I can't believe you are making me come up with this on the spot."
But, you know. They sound -- just about the same. Right?
And I did manage to finish, anyways. So now the Faith is stuck with me, cursing in the Cathedral and all.

Standing on the walls with archers, I watched in impotent horror as 500 hundred of my knights turned to dust before my eyes. I give my men to the Compact. I am told they would harass the enemy, to slow their march and then get back behind the walls. Extinguished by the exact same thing Princess Alis warned them would happen when the army of Tolmar Brand was at our walls. I was told that heavy Calvary would be called back to the city because they could do very little pinned between such a large host and our walls.
I put my trust in the man commanding the combined forces of the Compact. A man in whom my trust was absolute. I stand on the wall where he asks me to do so. And then I watch as they ride out again, after already doing the job they were told to do. And from that wall I watch in horror as 500 lives are extinguished. I failed my loyal knights because I put my faith in someone else to command them.
I don't know where the breakdown in communication was. But I will find out, and someone is going to fucking answer to me about this.

The Marquessa of House Deepwood has given me a great honor in providing me with the means to wage war on behalf of the Compact. So before I march off to aid in the defense of the Seawatch Gate, it should be noted that I thank her for her generosity and aid in providing me the means to ensure that I can perform to the best of my ability on the field of battle. Went out into the field with the column under Lady General Calypso. She's damned good at this generaling thing, that's for sure. It was an experience, all right, even though I was back with the supply train working on repairs after every battle. In the city we've got nobles and commoners. Out there there's a lot less of that, but still a big divide between fighters and support. That makes a lot of sense to me. I don't know much about fighting, and them fighters don't know my business either, so it's better we don't joggle each other's elbow when dropping something might mean someone gets killed. Now the siege starts. I'll be sleeping in the forge, I guess. When someone needs work, they'll need it right away.

Count Frederick Steelhart is a hard man who knows all to well the cost of honor and loyalty, but he is a man who's counsel I have always valued. When I was a boy I would sometimes refer to him as 'Ocean Arn' and would promptly be scolded by my father for it.
He is the kind of vassal ever leader needs though. Utterly unafraid of telling me when I am being a dumb-ass, yet brave enough to stand by you through thick and thin despite it. He is crass and ruffles feather's easily but he is a good man.
An 'I told you so' is a small price to pay for someone that has your back even when they want to slap you upside your stubborn head.
