Last night a Bringer tried to kill my dog.

Now, let me make this very clear: besieging my city and threatening lives and existence is quite bad enough.

Trying to hurt my dog is another level entirely.

I'll rip their damn throats out.

Relationship Note on Haati

The work he's done on Iliana's armor and weapon is amazing. Master Wavehowler is highly talented and has a knack for taking a basic idea and making it into something stunning. If you have not at least stopped by Wavehowler Wearh, I strongly suggest doing so if not just to appreciate the artistry and dedication that goes into his work.

Now that the Crimson Blades are patrolling the Ramparts and riverside, I've been able to spend a lot more time in Arx proper, helping the boroughs in their hunts.

I knew that some Bringers are tougher than others, but Gods above, the one I fought at the graveyard might as well have been built out of Alaricite for how long that duel lasted. In the end, it took a small village to bring that thing down.

A word of advice to anyone who hasn't fought a Bringer of Silence yet; Some are a lot more durable than others. If you aren't prepared for that, bring friends.

Document the third:

6 friends in a bar
...then 5
...then 4
...then 3
2 shots of whisky (one may have been a bottle)
1 not-so-terrified Crovane

I like these people. I like them very much.

I have seen a giant exist. I've watched the life drain from all four of its great eyes like so many other mundane creatures. Though one of its heads might have wished us dead in it's unnatural madness, the other bore us no ill will. That death weighs on me now as I remember it. A fantastical storybook being, yes, freed from evil corruption that plagued it but also blotted out forever ...and by my own hand, no less.

That is not a thing to celebrate.

I really wish these stupid dead things left behind more than their skulls...
Bringer skulls. Giant famori skulls. Animated skeleton skulls.

I really should start a collection. Put them all in a neat row on a shelf in my bedroom or turn them into candle-holders.

I sat inside a giant skull last night. A very strange thing, lounging inside of the head of another creature. What must he have been thinking when he was struck down?

Eirene and the others ran some tests on it and it seems perfectly safe to keep around. I have no idea what one does with a giant skull, so it resides in Southport Square for now.

These are strange times.

I have, for the most, remained silent about the 500 Cavalry Knights that perished at the hands of Tolmar Brand; crumbled to dust in front of the city's defenders. But I would like to start at the beginning.

A trusted friend; someone I consider close enough to be family came to me with a vision she had. Murky, but clearly some group of knights would meet their end at the hands of an enemy if nothing was done. And so I prayed to Jayus and the Sentinel both, pleading for clarity so that we could prevent those deaths. They answered; and, the message spread through the commanders of the forces from each Great House. Remain behind the walls when Brand arrives.

Yet, some of our own House's very best men and women went out there. And we still do not yet know who gave the order for them to go out and engage. My thanks go out to the Duke Regent, who helps us investigate. Edain and I will not rest until we find answers. We owe at least that much to the families of the fallen, and their military comrades. We honor their service and their sacrifices far too much to do otherwise, and we always take care of our own.

Relationship Note on Ansel

I find that I have come to rely on Lord Ansel as another commander in the field, as the battle against Brand's forces grew and eventually culminated in the siege we currently experience. Despite multiple injuries, he has consistently put himself forward to help however we might be able to use him. And, recently did not just step up to replace me as the commander of the Valardin forces that would assist Lady General Calypso with the Gyre land offensive, he also stepped up to take on her role as she also is needed in Arx to assist with the siege response and organization.

Honorable, loyal, and a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. I am pleased and proud to call him friend. If only I could convince him to stop with the Princess shit when we're not in a formal setting.

After burning off my eyebrows sweat kept hitting my eyes while in my armor, was extremely distracting. I bought some muddy makeup to swipe over my eyes during the day and keep moisture from my brow running to the sides, but what I need is an ointment to help the hair grow back faster. Perhaps that sweet apothecary with the pet mice has something that can help.

The first lantern from the shrine worked, after a fashion. It helped protect us against the Bringer's darkness, and we used it to burn their house down. Or the house they were in, anyway. Then I got a replacement lantern, also had it blessed, and the Bringers snuffed it out without any trouble. Whatever made the first lantern work wasn't me, so how do I make sure they can't do that to me again? Duke Cassius had a lantern they couldn't put out, maybe he can give me advice.

I continue to practice with the bow. His Highness, Prince Tristram has stated he is unable to offer any training until the siege is over; a shame, when there is a proliferation of targets and now, more than ever, we need to be ready.

The Crimson Seed lives up to her intent. She's a better bow than any I've handled, and truly worthy of a better archer than I.

Relationship Note on Sparte

I don't think I'll be able to find a man more sincere than Sparte. He is a good man who doesn't pretend to be more than who he is, but he has plenty of potential to be much more than anyone expects. I genuinely look forward to what the future has in store for him and the Iron Guard couldn't ask for a better soldier.

Relationship Note on Dafne

Sometimes, when you aren't quite looking, someone dear to you will grow up in remarkable and surprising ways. Duchess Dafne Zaffria is just younger enough than I that we were never quite in the same age group, not until very recently; also, she is so petite that it is literally likely that I'll overlook her purely due to my own ridiculous resemblance to a giraffe.

I am, though, very proud to call her 'cousin', and even more glad to call her friend.

Metaphors are a key part of an artist's toolset. Nearly as key as paint and paintbrush.

That said.

You can repurpose any given image to mean anything, which is far more perilous for religion than for art. Some cycles we should want to break and others are an essential aspect of our existence. The sun rises, the sun sets, cycle. We're born, we age, we die. Cycle. Abyssal hordes mass outside the gates, also cycle. Not terribly excited by that cycle either.

Of course cycles look like wheels and wheels look like cycles and I will be fascinated, fascinated to explore the intersection points between Death and life and repetition and change and rebirth, but I will let my brother tease out every iteration of the Wheel as he understands it first.

Relationship Note on Ainsley

As a sequel song to "Princess Ribbons," I bring you this:

Ainsley the Terrible
A man who’s incomparable
Whose jokes are maybe bearable
Except for some undeclarable
His sword arm undeterrable
His aim, so true, and shareable
I’m sure he’s quite preparable
for his life is quite the parable
to what may be repairable—
with all that stands against us
he’ll stand tall and unpretentious
for here’s a man to defend us
with courage here to lend us
It’s Ainsley the Terrible
His bravery unimpairable
His humor not so cerebral
These rhymes are quite chimerical
(This song’s a bit deplorable—)
The boy’s kind of adorable—
But my point is: absolutely terrible!
