Finally, things are looking up! Ever since the Refugee Relocation Committee evaporated, it seemed like nothing interesting was going to happen in the legal world of Arx! Maybe now I can finally purchase a new bed somewhere. Maybe even a new tub, too!

I need to find inspiration for my jewels once more. To me, at least, the pieces I make need something.

The days pass and word of the Gyre rising on everyone's lips has me thinking how it will be to fight on the swaying on the decks of a ship. I shall see soon how tough that can be.

A man that I can talk to easily, he has a stern way and yet I still see the heart of him that cares for others.

The capstone on my week was an adventure with the mysterious paladin. I had a lot of fun and I was glad for the experience or meeting Sir Matthew and the Otter Pirates.

Eccentric? I think so at least. Probably a result of the things he deals with on a daily basis, across an already seemingly long career. Methods of coping would have to be constructed or one would probably be driven mad. Unless that's the source of the eccentricities.

Hat making aside, I suspect that I'll need to consult with him in weeks to come regarding a number of matters that are sensitive in nature. Maybe I'll be able to convince him to hold a seminar or something.

I met the King for drinks in the estate not too long ago. He drank my booze and he was nice about it.

You know what that makes him? What I like to call 'tolerable as fuck' for a noble.

I cannot wait until the duel event in the Iron Pentathlon....so many fighters in one place.

It'll be great!! I can't remember the last time I was this excited.

Arx is a complicated city. I would say it is turning me into a complicated woman. But I'm not sure if that is true - perhaps I was always complicated, and the many facets of this city has let me see myself from new angles.

Too, it is not the city itself, of course. But rather the people in it, from many nations and views. They've given me much food for thought and helped me develop. In ways I did not expect as a freshly knighted Sword, arriving here.

I am thankful.

If Baron Whtehawk decides to do a repeat of the Iron Pentathlon, I hope he'll consider doing it earlier in the year - the water was freezing.

I admit, I went into the contest hoping only to acquit myself well for Valardin. I did go all in, however, and while I didn't have any of the amazing bursts of speed that some of the other contestants were capable of, I managed to keep a mostly even pace (even if I swallowed some sea water). Call it Oathlands persistance - it paid off, as I earned the bronze medal and third place, behind such luminaries as Prince Reese Grayson and Dame Esoka Greenblood.

I admit I'm proud. And I admit I hadn't expected to place so well. I'll give some credit to the cheering section that I could hear all the way over the crashing waves - with Duke Laurent using his battlefield voice.

Maybe that's why Princess Reese did so well - her cheering section was swimming after her, after all.

I am going to need to ask my cousin for archery lessons. Did you see that shot she made? I am exceptionally proud of her performance. I am proud of her in so many ways, and I am humbled to be a part of House Keaton. I am honored to serve those that we do, and I am looking forward to what the future might bring.

The duels are tonight and I am looking forward to it as well. I would say that perhaps I would compete next year, but evidently my wife has it in her head that she shall be. I do not believe that there will be Count versus Countess Keaton next year! No matter how much that might amuse people.

Relationship Note on Mia

The life I have made in the Compact has been built on the foundation of Countess Mia Riven, and her tireless efforts to keep her House strong. I am part of that strength now, and I pray I serve her well. I would also like to think us friends, after all these years. It does my heart good to have her running Heron Hall with all the industrious skill with which she leads the Twainfort.

I am so very proud of my fealty, the great and mighty Valardin and the showing we've made thus far in the Iron Pentathlon. I look forward to the dueling tonight and will use it to inspire me to get better with my quarterstaff so that maybe next year I can participate.

I had the pleasure of speaking with and sitting next to Princess Alis at the archer competition the other night. How is it that the Ladies and Princesses of Valardin are each nicer than the last? I have never felt so at home as I have in Arx. It is an unexpected and fantastic thing.

A SONG FOR THE INQUISITION:

In service to Crown and Compact,
the Inquisition holds oath to combat
the enemies of the Crown and the light
and those bound all unwilling in that fight
are caught betwixt all in a fearsome plight

Bold and fierce as a light in dark places
our men and women stand, frontward faces,
‘gainst monstrosities rising from the depths
even to confront us on the palace steps,
when their dastardly plans we did intercept.

An evil man whose name I won’t speak
In shadows cloaked and authority peaked—
We struck him down upon the stones
when he dared to subvert the Throne
alongside our brethren in the King’s Own

Now for his Majesty, we serve as sword
to pierce darkness and seek the horde
The questions we put to them all
will bring forth justice, truth, withal
and with that truth, we’re standing tall.

But truth our goal, and justice plain
Neither graft nor unnecessary pain—
It is grit we must have, the requisite
strength of purpose to Inquisit—
for it seems mysteries expand, infinite.

(More abstract, spare sketches. A couple of lines here and there create the elegant curve of a waterfowl neck.)

A bevy, a bank, a gathering of swans. Perhaps a parliament of owls. They make no sound when they fly. They land - they watch - they judge with golden coins for eyes.

Eventually someone will need to be paid.

(Two drops of ink spatter, drop, and stare like open and unblinking eyes.)
