It is good to see hard work paying off, even if it is only in small ways so far. New ships built, more people brought into the Compact under the name of Grimhall. There is much more to be done, but these gains are worth a moment to reflect on.

What does one require for a well-stocked liquor cabinet suitable for entertaining? The one in my new office is dreadfully bare.

The most amazing, delicious cake. I don't know if words can convey the decadent confection. I know most of the city already celebrates this woman as the best baker in Arx but-

-seriously. I have a few slices left. Come by for tea ... and -cake-.

She provided the alcohol for our wedding reception. Amazing, delicious stuff. If you haven't given her goods a whirl, I suggest you try it. Granted, I am proud of -all- of the Crafters, but I am biased in her catering to our little party. I don't know if I'll open my particular bottle, I may want to keep it forever, untouched and mine.

Being from Southport I've always favored warm weather. Sun on skin and flimsy silk dresses.

I have to say though that after so much time in the Crownlands the winter has grown on me too. It could just be that I look fantastic in cloaks. I also do like the way snowflakes look on the streets though, and the warmth of a fire after a chill wind.

Spring will always be my favorite though, so many flowers! It's just around the corner.

Returning to Arx even after such a short time away feels like returning to a different city.

How did the world get so strange and different while I wasn't looking?

On the advice of my cousin, Seth, I have joined the Academy of War. The meeting I attended was eye opening in a lot of ways.

Since it seems to be tradition.

Lord Alessandro Greenmarch offered me patronage, and I have accepted. I'm looking forward to working together further.

I have taken a protege, finally.

Briar Marjawn is incredibly gifted, and I feel blessed that he has agreed to work with me.

I've met friends this week I haven't seen in a long while.
Master Asher is back.
And Master Briar came by the garden the other day too.

Returning to Arx has been a whirlwind of activity, and I'm glad to have a chance to contemplatively review all that has happened.

There have been parties, a wedding (or two?), family dinners, duels, and more, but my favorite times have been in the quiet moments. You can know much more about a person when there are few in attendance. I find that the large groups are not as much to my liking these days. I think the more that I am in Arx, the more comfortable I will feel in large crowds.

My family is my rock, and I am glad to have a chance to visit with all of my family members who are in the city. They're having grand adventures -- I look forward to assisting with their adventures and possibly even having some of my own.

The city itself is overall quite welcoming. There is so much offered -- plays, concerts, a library, and oh, the shops. There are so many shops and so many talented designers.

I have also kept up with my training, as one must, but I find it to be very enjoyable. I am very glad to have made the journey once again back to Arx.

I've set up an office for myself in the College so as to be able to meet with people without having construction underfoot, or, of more concern, overhead. I have a very large desk perfect to spread my papers out on, larger than the desk I put in my chamber in Whisper House. I'll have to find a good liquor cabinet and likely a tea service so that I may entertain guests. Mostly, it's good to have a place to work inside the actual College; while the Whisper House is close, it's still a bit of a walk to bring work back and forth.

Believe it or not, I've been enjoying my time back in the city.

To the people I met in the tavern last night, we'll have to do that again. I hope that weird girl ,who is touched in the head, finds her lichen. Everyone should have goals, right?

I have decided I need another Protege. It is good having one, but, with my abilities more martial in focus, I truly do need another just for the assistance. It is quite vexing as I am unsure whom I know who could /be/ a protege to me, and is not already a protege to someone else.

Lord Percephon Halfshav is my favorite scholar. Not only is he one of the most well read individuals that I've had the pleasure of talking to, but he doesn't allow conventional thinking to hamper an investigation. If you need help, I would seek his assistance.

Relationship Note on Hannah

#2

I queried Lady Hannah Wyrmguard, after we had some mulled cider and had caught up. "What does being a soldier mean to you?"

She's not a soldier, far from it. Nor a trained knight. So I figured that an outside perspective might be helpful. The question perplexed her, but she offered her answer nonetheless.

"Someone who follows orders and will guard when you need them to."

That was her initial words. I pressed some more.

"Different soldiers have a different meaning. For your standard infantry, the meaning is simple enough. Now, you take a knight, that's an entirely different kettle of apples. Or anyone with authority and responsibility. But your standard soldier isn't meant to have a great deal of meaning. Give them too much complexity and it affects their value on the field."

Forthright. I've commanded and lost men and women on the field of battle. In the moment, you can't worry too much about Rainier and his dreams of taking over his dad's baker shop, once the engagement is at an end. Rainier needs to do what is asked of him. And if that's standing against the enemy, getting cut down to save the day, then his dreams die with him.

She's not wrong. But I still feel like some unmentionable quality is missing.

I will continue my queries.

Relationship Note on Gawain

#1

"What does being a soldier mean to you?" I asked.

He answered that he's more a knight than a soldier - the distinction, he said, is that a knight stands as a champion of ideals and duty, whereas a soldier is someone who fights for pay or feudal obligation.

So I pressed him on it. He clarified - a soldier, to Lord Gawain, is a man fighting out of his feudal obligations, or for want of pay. Someone who fights in groups, trained to be part of a regiment, more than of their own.

I am a knight. And I have my obligations, and my pay. I don't know that I'd choose to be anything else. The definition is very factual. Little to argue with.

I'll have to consider your answer carefully, Lord Gawain.

I need to remind myself I need to punch one of them.

It's been a few days, but I wanted to belatedly thank Amanda Whisper for the Snowball fight, and my team, who although they lost, lost gallantly, and had fun doing so.

We were eliminated to a man by Tikva's team, in a bout well won, but Prince Niklas proved he was better at snowballs than jousting, Count Artorius proved that a bigger target is not always easier to hit, and Lady Azova showed remarkable resilience in the face of our chosen 'foe'. With Lord Geralt and Master Ven to round out our numbers we were certainly not lacking for good arms overall, but the snow was not with us that day.

Next time? Bigger snow fort.
