Saedrus is at the doors of the gardens, greeting those that arrive. His snowy hair is half up in a single hairpin of ornate steel, and an outfit of blue silk. The attendants are about, and all the blankets and pillows required to lounge about and chill out -- others are carrying wine or whiskey trays. It is a red that Saedrus snags up and sips from.
"Hello! Hi, hello everyone!" Aleksei is either very excited or very nervous -- possibly both. "Thank you for coming! You can sit -- you know, wherever you want, Saedrus put everything together so nicely, all the pillows are super comfy--" Yes, this is totally a Formal Faith Affair. Right. The Archlector of Skald is dressed as he almost always is in his white longcoat adorned with the sigil of the Faith and the First Choice. He snags up a glass of whiskey for himself. "I hauled over the basket from the shrine, too, with copies of the new doctrine, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. I'll get started in just a second--"
Aureth gets The Doctrine of Skald from a basket of free prayerbooks.
Samantha arrives with her arm linked to Rymarr's. Saedrus and Aleksei are offered an easy smile, though given Rymarr's armor, Samantha seems ill-inclined to go for the blankets and pillows. The swing, however, seems to intrigue her, and well, Ry can either sit on that, or give her the occasional push while they participate in the discussion.
Aureth is also wearing an Archlector's coat, in the long sweep of white aeterna and shiny skull buttons; he wanders up to the basket to scoop one up, and then toasts Aleksei with it like it's a drink. He finds one of the blankets and then perches in a languid sort of sprawl on his elbow, demonstrating extreme casualness because he is a helper.
Fortunato has ditched his usual patched up armor for summer. He's wearing just a plain silver-grey shirt and loose pants. He takes a seat on one of those fine blanket-pillow sets, all ready to be attentive.
With all of Olivia's curious visits to the new secret surprise shrine and related things, it seems only appropriate she actually show up to learn something at their first proper event. The fact that it's not actually at the shrine is no matter: the gardens here are lovely too! So she comes in at her usual skipping pace, and pauses as Saedrus offers a greeting, dipping into a quick curtsey herself and then continuing further inside. And oh, pillows! "Is this like a religious slumber party? I rather like it!" she declares, taking one of them and looking around for an appropriate spot to setup.
Aureth has joined the a thick comfy ebony blanket with red and bronze cushions.
Ferrando trucks in with an unusual lack of clanky for once. It's his day off, apparently. Before he gets too far into the proceedings, one of the staff comes up and offers him tea and why yes that would be excellent thank you and a quiet discussion of the various types on offer ensues.
Serenity arrives, following Khanne.
Serenity have been dismissed.
Rymarr moves at Samantha's side, his arm up and aside for her to link to at her leisure. He however turns his attention to both Aleksei and Saedrus upon their arrival and offers the pair a bare-headed nod as his helmet is tucked away beneath his opposite arm, "Thank you very much for the opportunity to learn something new." Following that simple comment, Rymarr drifts off to attend to Samantha's guidance until such as point as they reach the swing. That very object Rymarr fixes with an appraising stare, then his cold blue eyes swiftly shift back to Samantha, and he quietly grumbles out at her, "I think that I'll stand...behind the swing." Putting that very statement into action, he steps around to stand behind the swing and settles in for the long haul to play resolute sentry to the momentum of another.

Arianna was here a bit early, waiting in the Grotto proper for the gathering to pick up. Adorned in a pearlescent seasilk gown and matching sandals. She strolled into the area with an easy gait. Giving a soft smile to those present and a deep bow of respect to Saedrus and Aleksei. Pausing before she goes any further she examines the area for a while before she meanders back towards Saedrus. Her eyes roam up and down his body for a moment before she gives him a nod and a shit eating grin. "I want to say this as a compliment and I hope you take it as such. You, are very very pretty." Then she nods and will move to find a seat, sitting down coincidentally next to Fortunato.

Lady Vanora Pravus slips in quietly, dark purple silk hugging her figure in Setarco's fashion. She takes a prayer book and skims the garden for somewhere to sit, determining that the day bed under the willows looks particularly inviting.
Leta pokes her nose in curiously, looks about, then strolls out into the garden, finishing whatever little tune she was whistling with a couple of final. She's wearing colorful clothes, jewelry and a fancy hat, as one does. She bows her head respectfully to the present, and stands there, contemplating the various seating options before picking the one that best complements her outfit, that being the green blanket with the gold cushions, in her estimation.

Khanne arrived, perhaps a bit behind the others, and tries to look unobtrusive in her grey, white, and green silk gown, her wine-red hair swept up and held in delicately painted hairpins. She makes her way to the basket of books, taking one for herself and thumbing through it as she walks to stand sort of on the outer edge of the gathering. After all, she is a shaman a bit out of her element here.

"I mean, how would that be other than a compliment?" Aureth slants a look in the direction of his new neighbor, and then licks his fingertip and turns the page of the doctrine that he has been browsing over (like he hasn't read it multiple times in earlier drafts). "Saedrus is gloriously pretty." He nudges Fortunato with the toe of his shoe. Hi, Fortunato.

Dagon is, like many, a person of faith but all the same not very well versed in this new one. Or old one. New old one? So he's more or less the demographic that the event is designed for! Out of his armor, he's just in his usual vaguely swashbucklery-looking leathers and silks, though Reafian remains forever at his hip. With people picking up free literature, he seems as curious as any, and then surveys the available seating. Fluffy cushions and whatnot may not really be his pace, so he finds a more traditional seat.
Dagon has joined the Tables and chairs before the fountain.
Vanora opens the book once settled onto the daybed comfortably, clearly intensely curious and not familiar with its contents. (Whether she is familiar with the tales written in the contents isn't as clear). She is almost mesmerized, such is her focus on the text, and pages turn while the Grotto seems to fall away just a bit. A reader through and through.
Squee, the Flying Squirrel, Brigid, Bear, an giant dog arrive, following Darren.
Olivia has joined the a thick comfy ebony blanket with red and bronze cushions.
Vanora has left the A day bed beneath the willow.
Spotting Arianna, Khanne gives her a nod and makes her way over to the cushions where the blonde sits with Fortunato and Aureth.

"Not quite," Saedrus chortles delighted to Olivia, "just something comfortable, yes?" The male courtesan smiles as Aureth and Fortunato come in as well and happy greeting, gracious bows and cheerfulness abounds to Samantha and Rymarr. When Arianna trundles on over, Saed tips his head, the length of his hair left out spills along one shoulder, and he dips his head with a pinkness to his cheeks. "Very flattering, my Lady, thank you," evergreen eyes bright and vivid for the smile. As Arianna trails off to find a seat, his attention briefly turns to Aleksei -- more people arriving! "Welcome, please have a seat. The attendants have drinks available, be comfortable and if there is anything else do ask an attendant."
Samantha lifts a hand in greeting to Leta warmly, and then tilts her head back back wayback to grin at Rymarr. "Push?" she wheedles, befre returning her attention to Aleksei and Saedrus. She oh's softly. "I should have brought our copy."
Darren steps into the gardens, a touch later than the others. He's quietly polite, coming to grab a doctrine from the basket before he spots Khanne and goes to settle next to her.

Fortunato looks for a moment like he might push himself up when Arianna gives Saedrus the visual once-over. He kicks Aureth loosely and lightly instead, folds his arms, and raises a brief, questioning eyebrow at Saedrus before nodding a sidelong welcome at Khanne.

"Oh, gods. Look at all of you." Aleksei's smile is just starting to freeze a touch when he suddenly startles -- just a tiny bit, but it's noticeable. He clears his throat, his gaze sliding over to Arianna with a faint, frowning furrow. And then he steps a bit more up to the head of everyone. Front of the classroom? "I feel weird standing up here, but I don't think everyone could see me if I sat, so. Welcome! Uh. For anyone who doesn't know me, I'm Aleksei Morgan. Um. Blessed Aleksei Morgan, that's the proper title. Archlector of Skald. Or the First Choice. I had to have people--" His gaze flits briefly to Aureth and Saedrus. "--explain to me what a salon was when Father Orazio first suggested I do this. So. I thought I'd kind of go through some of Skald's history, and then the message, and then whatever else, and people can -- you know, talk and ask questions? About things?" He eyes some of the fancier people here like he's half-expecting someone to correct him about proper salon procedure.
Without a scrap of armor, simply but presentably dressed - and of course, armed - Agnarr makes his way in, glancing down at the basket pensively but opting not to take one. He moves over to join Ferrando and Leta at their blanket.
Agnarr has joined the a thick comfy evergreen blanket with ivory and gold cushions.
"It does look very comfortable!" Olivia answers Saedrus, and then looks around for a place to settle. Her pillow is eventually put down on one of the blankets, largely by random, and she carefully settles over it, making sure her skirt is spread out evenly and smoothly. Though she's not well acquainted with most of the group when she sits, she does spot Lady Khanne approaching the same way as well and also waves at her. "Lady Minister, good to see you again - in less frightening circumstances!" She also nabs a book along the way. Because maybe her sister doesn't have this one yet! What a coup that would be, her finding something to add to their library first!

Leta, not a fancy person, wiggles around once she's seated at the blanket, and adjusts the scabbard on her belt so her sword's not digging anywhere it shouldn't. She holds up a hand to return Samantha's wave, smiling brightly, though she accompanies this with a respectful bow of her head. After another quick glance around, she returns her attention to Aleksei and listens.
Saedrus saunters aside, as Aleksei finds head of the class, to approach the Archlector. The courtesan leads him juuuuust a little aside to the fountain edge, which is tall enough to sit on and high enough everyone would be able to see Aleksei as he speaks.
Rymarr nods in response to Samantha's question, though he lofts a lone eyebrow at her leaning back on the swing. He quietly mutters toward her before his attention lifts to regard Aleksei. He considers the Archlector of Skald for only a moment before Rymarr's attention drifts toward Darren. Should he gather the attention of Redrain's prince, a series of gauntlet-clad hand gestures are cast toward Darren. Meanwhile, Rymarr's opposite hand begins to press forward in a bid to provide Samantha with the push she desires.
Esoka edges in the gardens as Aleksei is speaking. She finds a place to stand and listen quietly as he starts, scanning the crowd. Samantha and Rymarr are shot a quick grin, when they're spotted.
Khanne smiles to Fortunato. "It has been a long time, Fortunato. Good to see you." She nods too to Aureth. "You as well. I think, perhaps, the lantern ceremony? Or was it our adventure?" She hums in thought and shrugs, unsure of which happened first. Nodding to Arianna, she says quietly, "Lady Arianna, we have not had a chance to speak since our meeting. You are well?" She smiles to Olivia then and nods. "much less, well, at least I hope. the night is still young, after all." She grins then looks up to Aleksei as he begins, giving him her full attention for the moment, until she nods and looks aside to Darren. "Seems so."
Darren looks up from his paging through of the Doctrine to spot Rymarr. The man gets a wide grin, and a similar hand gesture thrown his way.
"Oh!" Aleksei beams, warm and effusive, at Saedrus when the courtesan directs him to the fountain to sit. "That's better. Okay! So Skald has a pretty interesting history, so seems like it's best to start there. There used to be more gods -- a long, long time ago. Like, before humans existed at all, right? More gods. And there was a god of Fate, and then there was Skald. Fate and Free Will are kind of -- well, they're a bit /opposed/, yeah? Not the way the gods and their Dark Reflections are opposed, but they can't coexist easily. So Skald challenged Fate, and he won. Some people take that to mean that Fate /died/, that Skald /killed/ it or whatever, but it's not really -- I mean, these are gods we're talking about, they don't really work by mortal rules. It was a challenge, and Skald won, so Fate's not around. That's the basic premise. And that's what First Choice is really in reference to. Fate was replaced by Death, and now we have mortality, basically. Humans are kind of intrinsically connected to free will in a way that's not -- /entirely/ clear. But you'll sometimes see records reference the Children of Skald, or the Children or Choice, or whatnot, and that means humans." Sitting as he is, it all comes a little easier: he's not an eloquent speaker, but he's got a sort of artless charm to him, and he gestures animatedly as he talks on the subject.
With no familiar faces nearby to meet and greet and chat with, Vanora keeps all of her focus on Aleksei, the Archlector. "That sounds perfectly wonderful, Archlector. Thank you for doing this. Though I spend much of my time studying theology and focused on the Faith, I admit to knowing very little of the 'First Choice'. Just reading this book you've shared has already multiplied my knowledge by the dozens. I look forward to hearing more from you...to leaving here knowing more than I did when I came." Her smile is unusually encouraging and gentle.
Aureth toasts Aleksei at this point and goes, "That's the real reason why we get along so well."
Darren looks up from his quiet conversation on the blanket to study Aleksei as he speaks, listening with interest.
Fortunato speaks loud enough to carry. "Us as children of Choice. I like it. Even if Fate has a nice safe ring to it. If you're lucky enough to be on the right side of it." He clears his throat. "But any safety you've no choice in smells like a cage eventually."
Once Aleksei is seated, and more comfortable there in front of the gathering, Saedrus leaves the Archlector with a smile to speak. From there the courtesan swans between those gathered, to be sure everyone has what they need but without interrupting Aleksei's salon.
Dagon spends his time reading once he's settled, waiting for things to begin. They did go to the effort of providing the material, after all. He spends a few moments paging through the document, more skimming for the moment than a deep, thoughtful read. But he looks up as Aleksei begins, no doubt curious to hear things from the source. Such expectations may be slightly tempered when said source seems a bit intimidated by the whole procedure, but small steps. "Children of Choice. Does that mean we're the only ones with said free will, and others are bound by fate? Or... how did that work, when Fate died, or was banished, or whatever happened." Seems he's happy to start in with the questions, get things salon'ing. He pauses, and looks down at the book, "Well, he freed others too, it says. The elves and such. I just wonder how that's different?"
Occasionally speaking softly amongst those she sits near, Khanne silences when Aleksei speaks, her misty-greys locked on him as she tries to take in all he says.
Asher may be late, but he's here - bedecked in his comfortable-looking leather armor, and looking for people he knows. People he can sit with, so he won't bother anyone else.
"Right?" Aleksei points all decisively at Fortunato. YES, FORT. THAT. "I mean, I'm kind of biased here, but I definitely think that free will's pretty /vital/ to our lives." His attention slides over to Dagon. "No, I don't think that's the case. Fate's gone whether you're a human or an elf. It's just that humans didn't even /exist/ before Skald made his First Choice, so we end up /particularly/ defined by it, you know? I mean, I had a Nox'alfar tell me once that choice just isn't as important to them as it is to us. Not that they don't /have/ it, it's just not -- so -- fuck, what's the word. Intrinsic! That one. And the people he freed -- well, I was just getting to that, but that's a whole separate part of the history."
Leta stares at Aleksei, in between light conversation around the blanket. Her brow furrows in thought as she strains to focus and work her way through this. She's not entirely successful, going by the look on her face. "Uh." But she keeps quiet, and turns to catch everyone else's questions instead.
"Think maybe it's because Nox'alfar remember all their lives? They've got basically forever to be themselves or be new selves, while we basically got the now," Fortunato posits, scratching behind one ear. "Every shining perilous moment's precious because we have fewer of them."
"The elves are the children of the Queen of Endings," Aureth says, hooking his arm across his knee as he takes another swallow from his wine glass. He offers this quietly, with a grave cast to his features that suggests the heavy weight of the conversation going around his cuddle blanket. "As we are the children of the First Choice. The Nox'Alfar love Death best of all, and culturally, they are focused on their worship. And part of why they may not take dying or killing anywhere near as seriously as, say, we do."
Arianna continues scanning the growing crowd. Though her eyes land on Asher and she smiles brightly to him, gesturing for him to come and sit next to her and the others. Though she turns to raise a hand, like a small child in class. "Archlector, I have a question about The First Choice...some sources have claimed he is an ancient spirit of immense power. Yet in other lore he is mentioned to be a God, and yet again tales come from the north about a man who fits Skald's classic descriptions working miracles...how was it that he was formally joined with the Pantheon?"
Olivia looks up from whatever conversations at her blanket as the larger one seems to be getting under way. And the elves came up! Which makes this a somewhat curious matter for her. Even if she and elves aren't on the best of terms presently! (Her hand gets a little rubbing.) "I understand that they think of death differently. But choice seems a whole different thing. If they don't choose... er, how do they choose? Or if it's not important to them, how, I mean, erm. It's a little hard to grasp. I do want to understand because they seem terribly fickle and cruel. Does that mean without active choice they just decide at random whim, and random whim itself is naturally cruel?"
Samantha considers Olivia's question, noting, "The natural aftermath of choice is consequence. Perhaps it's not so much that the eleves don't choose, but rather they do not really have an innate sense, or even care, of consequence. And the most fundamental consequence of violence is death, which they neither fear nor truly comprehend."
"They comprehend death just fine," Aureth says in a tone of mild correction. "They merely comprehend it very differently."
Esoka listens with rapt attention to Aleksei, eyes flashing as he tells of the battle between Free Will and Fate. Like she's trying to picture the clash in her mind. She has no questions of her own for the moment. She just drifts to stand near Samantha, eyes intent.
Rymarr grimaces once the Nox'Alfar are brought into the conversation. His lip noticably curls, but he remains silent. He opts for silence and the opportunity to listen and learn. Even if one topic or another causes his left eye to mildly twitch.
"I think you'd have to ask Blessed Aureth about that," Aleksei says with a crooked grin to Fortunato. And Aureth is already speaking with all the weight of his own authority on the Nox'alfar and the Queen of Endings. His attention slides over to Arianna. "Skald is a god," he says in confirmation. "There are a lot of stories about the 'mad mage of the north,' yeah, because he's been wandering around for a while, but -- hold on, I'll get back to that as we go through the rest of his history." He looks between Olivia and Samantha with interest. "As far as I can tell, they have choice. They don't seem to fear death so much because they simply wake up in a new life if they die. They remember all their past lives, so it's more like -- you know, one /long/ life. They die, they're reborn, they remember all of it. So death isn't /final/, it's just another part of their story. But!" His grin flashes a bit. "If Aureth wants to hold his /own/ salon about souls and the like, he can. But just to finish out the history..."
"I agree entirely. That free will is vital to our lives. It seems to be a part of the tenets of every Faith in the Pantheon in one way or another. As a servant of the Thirteenth, much of what I study, and share, is to do with free will. With understanding and either overcoming or embracing the darkness within us that we might rather not see. With accepting the truth, however uncomfortable, of who we are." Vanora nods then to Samantha. "Yes. Freedom and Consequence. All parts of our understanding of what it means to exist." She quiets though when Aureth speaks, confessing. "I know little about Elves." There is almost a blush on pale cheeks to admit it, as if she's certain she should know more about so much.
Dagon makes a little gesture for Aleksei to go on, as he suggests whatever question will be answered in due time. No reason to bother the man with things he already plans to answer. Plus there's some other musings going on, and he looks over toward Arianna and Olivia in turn. "It is a little baffling, I admit, to try and understand behavior that isn't rooted in a strong sense of decisionmaking. Although then again, I suppose there are many men and women who are far more... impulsive, in their own actions. They make choices, technically, but they make them without really pondering the alternatives. I'm not sure if that's exactly the same thing, but it sort of sounds like the trouble with the Nox'alfar."
Fortunato mutters loud enough to carry, "I'm impulsive."
Samantha acknowledges Aureth with a nod of her head; it's a fair point made. Rymarr remains behind her on the swing but she can practically feel that lip curl as if he was standing right in front of her. Esoka is regarded with the warmest of smiles, but for now, she resumes silence so Aleksei can finish.
Ysbail slips into the garden, late but present. She sidles around to where Khanne stands, flicking a glance around the room and offering a quick nod to those she knows before turning her attention to the discussion at hand.
"Yes, let me not steal Aleksei's party." Aureth finishes off the last of the wine in his glass and then grins a little at what Fortunato says.
Darren stays quiet at the talk of the Nox'alfar, his features almost entirely devoid of expression. He keeps his focus on Aleksei, leaning forward just a slight bit as the man continues on.
Saedrus chuckles into his hand, passing Aureth and Fortunato's place on the blankets to lean down and kiss both men on the cheek.
Asher spots Arianna and heads over to sit right next to her, as he hears the conversation about Elves and the nature of Skald. He's clearly interested in what's going on. There's just so much he wants to know - but he needs to hear the rest before he starts asking questions...
Arianna snickers at Fortunato's mutters before she gives a sober nod to Dagon. "I would agree with your observations, your grace." Clearing her throat she takes another sip of her wine. Ah, now this makes sense. When Saedrus comes closer she smiles to him but turns to Asher. Uttering a few soft words to him as she scoots closer.
"I understand their lack of fear, I suppose, from what I've been told about their sense of life and death and their worship of Death," Olivia declares. "I just suppose their behavior seems to go beyond that. It is one thing not to worry over death or value it highly. But it is another thing to be so very, well, whimsically cruel as they seem to be." Then she dips her head and murmurs, "But I do not know that much about them, in truth, and may find my opinion very negatively colored by one brief interaction." She nods back at Dagon. "Impulsive may be a word for it. But mean-spirited too. I don't know."
"Questions and discussion will be best left until after Blessed Aleksei has finished with the histories and main message, I think." Saedrus says warmly standing up again. A smile is returned to Arianna and the courtesan continues his idle wandering.
Aureth trades Saedrus a smile for the cheek-kiss, his fingertips touching the courtesan's arm as the man withdraws. His eyes glint with humor as he rolls a look to Olivia. "I think the word you're looking for is 'assholes'," he says, "but yeah, Saedrus is right."
Khanne seems quiet mostly at the moment, listening to all the talk around her, perhaps getting a bit lost in her thoughts.
"Okay so -- Lady Aislin Ashford has a really great history of the elves, and if anyone's more curious about this next bit, I'd suggest finding a copy to read, because it'll have more context for this part. The basic idea is this: a very long time ago, the Rex'alfar allied themselves with the Abyss. Unknowingly at first, but the relevant point is that they started binding slaves with magic," Aleksei says, moving on through the history. "You don't even need physical chains if you've literally taken away people's free will, right? These slaves weren't just humans, but also Nox'alfar and Sylv'alfar. And there were so many Writs that Skald just -- well, he had to fix it. I have to imagine he feels stuff like that on such a deeper level than even any of us can really understand feeling. It's against his very /nature/, you know? And there were so many of them. So he came down and he smashed all the magical Writs to pieces. Freed the slaves. He didn't know at the time that he'd also be freeing his own Dark Reflection to act as well." His smile goes a bit taut, more like half a grimace. "It was the start of a series of events that eventually became the Reckoning. A few centuries later, his Dark Reflection -- the Archfiend of Slavery -- has bound a lot of the Sylv'alfar to him, stripped them of their names and identities, and manipulated them to war with humanity. Which was the Elven War. And it was around this time that Skald came down to fight his Dark Reflection personally. He wrestled with it and slammed it into the earth, creating the Red Run Falls, and defeated it. So now, his Dark Reflection is contained from harming us, but it also means that Skald has lost a lot of his divine power. So he actually -- well. He wanders Arvum. And this is probably the time he became Lost to our memories. It wasn't until recently that his Seraph -- his divine champion -- returned and decided that we could really use him in the Pantheon again. So she started rebuilding his temple, and -- well. Now he's in the Pantheon. And we're left catching up a bit on all that we forgot about him."
"With so many people embracing him, is it having any effect on his divinity?" Samantha inquires. "I should imagine that faith is power. Is it restoring him?"
Fortunato inclines his head toward Saedrus, for the greeting. Then he's wrapped up in the story, if not without a, "He did what he needed to. Thanks for the summary, hadn't heard it quite like that." He pauses. "Always get confused in the timelines."
Arianna turns to look at Samantha with a curious expression, a very astute observation. Arianna reminded herself to have a word with the woman, if she ever had the chance.
Darren looks up as Brigid leans to murmur something into his ear. He makes a face, but slowly rises, flashing an apologetic look to Aureth before quietly making his way back out.
Darren has left the a thick comfy ebony blanket with red and bronze cushions.
Squee, the Flying Squirrel, Brigid, Bear, an giant dog leave, following Darren.
Dagon looks appropriately chastised when Saedrus tells them all to hold back. As maybe some of this chatter is his fault. "Oh, apologies. I didn't realize the Q and A wasn't until the end." But he's polite, and reasonably quick to shut up when that seems to be the proper thing!
Asher perks up at the last bits of what Aleksei says, curious as can be, and he also asks a question: "Is there any evidence of Skald being in Arx within the past... Say, five years? Or during the war with the Sylv'Alfar five centuries?" He also does lean over to whisper to Arianna, smiling at her.
Asher has joined the a thick comfy ebony blanket with red and bronze cushions.
Olivia is probably too polite herself to call the Nox'alfar what Aureth suggests, but she doesn't exactly argue the point either! And with conversation being reigned in a little, she lowers her voice some. "I did read all my sister's books, before we went. It's a very interesting history."
"No, I don't think so," Aleksei says with an almost apologetic smile to Samantha. "I think he could chose to return to Elysia if he wanted. But right now, he chooses to stay here, as he is." He shrugs a bit. "He does what he wants." He looks over to Asher, brows sweeping up, and then he huffs a laugh. "I saw Skald hanging around his shrine -- what, a week or two ago? He doesn't even seem to think he has to wear shoes or a shirt in there, and I can't exactly tell him how to dress in his own temple. As far as the Elven War -- I kind of figure him coming down and wrestling his Reflection was probably towards the end of things? I doubt he was that involved in the war itself, because at that point he was still in Elysia, and any action he took would give his Reflection room to act, too. He wasn't earthbound until after he defeated his Reflection." He pauses a moment. "I think his Seraph was probably more involved in that fight." He flashes a grin at Dagon, and cups a hand around his mouth to admit in a stage whisper, "Me either." HOW DO SALONS WORK. Alekseis don't know. "Which kind of brings us the whole core of his message..."
Saedrus tips his head towards his attendants, and those not serving drinks leave briefly to return with silver trays in hand offering treats. Sliced summer fruits, peppered crackers and various cheeses on some -- others have olives and peppers marinated in flavoured oils. All tasty finger-nibbles which start to circulate -- it's not super fancy, promise. Evergreen eyes cant towards Asher, and Saed just chuckles, smiling then to Dagon with a elegant bow of his head. "With the message, I think that is all needing explanation and I am sure there are plenty of questions to be asked thereafter. Do be curteous with them though, there is only one of Blessed Aleksei for which to answer them."
Asher whisper arianna=I could easily talk to him about it. But also, I think he's trying to keep Aleksei safe? I don't know.
Olivia does spare Aleksei a big smile from her blanket area, both possibly in encouragement for his Salon-ing and because the Seraph gets a mention. Big fan!
Dagon can't help himself from a laugh at the Brother's rather exaggerated 'whispering.' His look is sympathetic. And while he's trying to avoid peanut gallerying, he does think to point out (perhaps for morale purposes): "Until the guests are drunk and throwing knives at each other, it'd be hard to top my experiences for social events gone awry. Oh, and spears." Knives are small time, really.
Treats? There are treats? Samantha perks, almost resembling a meerkat. Finger nibbles and plenty of them need to be in her belly. And when the servers swing her way, she collects a good few of them, utterly apologetic. She does murmur to her husband as she remains on the swing, though.
"Skald is the god of choice and freedom. He's a breaker of chains. He's not--" Aleksei's smile goes a bit crooked. "I'll be frank. He's not the most /responsible/ god. All of the gods are kind of -- limited by their natures. They've got a certain purity to them. Humans are complicated, we've got bits and pieces of all of it. But the core tenet of following the First Choice is to honor your own ability to /make/ choice. Having free will does mean that we have the ability to make good choices or shitty choices. It means that we can choose good /or/ evil. Now, there are other gods in the Pantheon to cast judgment on what choices you /make/. The Sentinel sees what you choose to do, and it judges whether you've done good or evil. But for Skald, it's the fact that you /have/ that choice that's sacred." There's an eager brightness to his eyes now. "What's the power in doing good if you don't have any other choice but to do it? It's only because we have the capacity to do evil that /gives value/ to our ability to do good." His gaze slides about the crowd. "There /are/ some things that are evil to Skald, though: binding others -- or even yourself. Slavery is anathema to him for obvious reasons." And here he hesitates a moment. "Chains of either a physical sort -- or even magical." He pauses for a moment. "I think we all know that the world is a lot different than we thought it was only two years ago. Magic is real, despite the efforts of the Abyss to keep that knowledge from us. And like the Rex'alfar did so long ago, there are servants of the Abyss who can bind others into their service. And maybe you have a choice. Maybe you're offered power, or knowledge, or your life, or any number of things. But the end result is the same: you're stripped, either wholly or in part, of your own free will. This is why the doctrine calls for people to not only refrain from infringing on the free will of others, it calls for us to protect our /own/ souls. To not sell our own choice for whatever the darkness might offer us." He pauses again, swallowing, his jaw working a moment. "Even when the offer seems worth it. It's not. Vows are sacred to Limerance because they are acts of /choice/. They are vows that we /actively choose/ to remain faithful to every day. But a magical binding -- a Writ on your soul -- strips you of the very gift Skald has given humanity."
Rymarr listens to Aleksei's long explanation with a plain and passive stare. The grimace remains etched into his expression, but at least he's not brow-beating the discussion! He nods along at some points, while others leave him stoic and grim as per usual. A question seems to spring to mind at some point, his mouth opens and an armored hand even rises up as if to call attention to the question on the cusp of pouring from his face-hole. Then he promptly snaps his mouth shut once again and his hand returns to pushing Samantha on the potentially treacherous swing.
"No more chains," Fortunato sottos loose and quiet in the background.
"With some measure of luck," Saedrus smiles to Dagon, "I do hope the Salon will not come to that." No knives or spears in the Grotto gardens please -- it would be such a terrible mess to clean up. Not that Saedrus cleans. Evergreen eyes cast towards Aleksei as he speaks on the message of Skald and the topic therein; the smile is soft from the courtesan as he studies Aleksei. By the end of it all, having swanned his way somewhere closer to the fountain again, Saedrus bows gracefully before those present, "thank you Blessed Aleksei. The history and message of Skald given very well, and now, if you have question please, the floor is yours." A brief beat before he adds, "again, there is only one person to answer them, so be polite with it all."
Arianna looks over to Dagon with a smirk, the mention of knife tossing sounds familiar. She had to wonder if this was Princess Fatima's work. White Journals were so damn keen. Trying not to look too amused she listens to Aleksei's explanation of magical writs and bindings. It sounded impossible of course but there was far too much she had witnessed to just brush off as fantasy. Chewing her bottom lip, her eyes narrowed as she pondered what he was saying. Though she is brought out of her reverie by Fortunato's quiet voice. Before leaning once again to exchange a quiet word with Asher on the matter of discussion.
Samantha lifts her chin at Fortunato's declaration, but her mouth is occuped with cheese, and perhaps that's best for everyone just at this moment.
"As I seem the most prominent Thrax representative in attendance, you're mostly safe, I think," Dagon tells Saedrus. "Though I can't make any promises." He will reach for the refreshments as they come along, snagging up some cheese. Still, the last of Aleksei's overview and introducted turned sermon seems to catch his attention in a more complete way. There's a look of, well, however one looks when something resonates, and he nods along with Aleksei. "I'm glad he has returned to us, or at least, to our conscious awareness as much as he might have been ever-present in whatever form or fashion. Those are important messages." Of course, now that it's actual question time, he has to think if he has one. Because he rushed and ruined not-question time!
Vanora looks thoughtful, looking at her book and then up at all the people speaking. "That sounds in many ways..similar or at least complimentary to the teachings of the Thirteenth. Truly, I am fascinated. I would love to speak with you more at length about those particular parallels." This directed to Aleksei himself. "Though I do not want to take over the conversation with it, there is so much else worth pondering."
Leta raises a hand. To the people with the treats, really, fetching herself a small pastry. She almost looks like she's on the verge of raising her hand again for a question, but lets it drop. Her mouth is full, seeing as she's just stuffed the whole pastry in it, so she remains in quiet, chewy thought.
Esoka happily takes some finger foods and a drink, as the attendants circulate. She pairs a nibble of fruits with a helping of the peppers. The combination appears to please her, but her grin. As she continues to listen to Aleksei, though, her expression grows more thoughtful. "To that last. I am wondering, Blessed Aleksei, how you reconcile the virtues of Limerance with the virtues of Skald? Of the First Choice I know little, though I try to follow the pantheon well and have sought to integrate worship of the newly-found gods into my prayers. But how //does// Skald regard the vows and oaths and bonds we place upon ourselves? Even your own vows, as godsworn."
Saedrus returns to wandering through those present, a glass of red wine in hand which he still hasn't actually sipped from.
Ysbail pops up at that one, smiling brightly and looking to Esoka, "You *chose* to enter those bonds and oaths, thus exercising your free will to bind yourself to a specific person, group, family. Otherwise, fealty alone would be offensive."
Asher thinks on this some more, and then nods to Aleksei. "I've got more questions but later. I think you said you owe me a favor for saving Magpie and Fortunato during the Siege... Whenever you have time to talk in private.
Samantha pops a petitfor in her mouth, nodding vigorously and pointing at Ysbail. What she said!
"I've actually wondered if I was going to end up in arguments with Blessed Ilvin when he came back to the city and I finally met him," Aleksei admits with a quirked grin. "But he's just about the nicest ever, so. I do think that /choice/ is the important matter. And even when you enter into a vow -- you would still have the /choice/ to break it. Yeah? Not that Limerance would want you to in most cases. But what's the virtue of fidelity if you don't have the choice to be unfaithful?" He lifts his hand, palm up. "The gods of the Pantheon are aspirational. Doing the right thing, doing the moral thing -- it isn't /easy/. It's a choice you have to make every day. Every decision. We have to consider /all/ the Pantheon in our lives, because they each offer us something different and unique to live better lives."
Aleksei adds a smile and a nod to Vanora. "The Thirteenth is so much about self-awareness, self-reflection, and the nature of light and dark, I think. Certainly having full knowledge of ourselves -- the good /and/ the bad -- helps us to make /better/ choices." To Asher, he quirks a brow. "Uh. Sure, of course."
Khanne hums thoughtfully and bites the inner corner of her lip in thought.
Arianna slowly stands up from where she was sitting to make her way over to Lady Vanora Pravus. Sitting down close to her, she offers an easy smile before she will lower her voice to have a hushed conversation. So as to not be rude of course.
Asher has left the a thick comfy ebony blanket with red and bronze cushions.
Vanora nods to Arianna as she approaches to sit, welcoming even if her expression isn't usually terribly warm. However when the lady whispers in her ear a smile crosses the Pravus lady's features.
Asher stands from where he was seated, looking as though he's putting his glove back on. He heads over to Arianna to whisper something to her, and then waves to people he knows before bowing out, to head... Away. Somewhere.
Esoka inclines her head to Ysbail, smiling slight at Aleksei's response. "Yes, Blessed Ilvin is very sweet. And wise. I take your meaning, Blessed. It is our responsibility to keep our vows. I do wonder if there will be times when you can fail one virtue while trying to uphold the other. But this is a question that makes me dizzy and, as you say, doing right by your own life is never simple." She pops some more fruit into her mouth, washing it down with a drink and listening with interest to the others in the crowd.
Agnarr has left the a thick comfy evergreen blanket with ivory and gold cushions.
"Think," Fortunato starts, "that some folk are more aligned to some virtues than others. Order and chaos, or change, aren't often present in everyone to the same degree, I guess. Some gods, you're going to struggle with. Some gods feel naturally compelling."
"I think there absolutely will be," Aleksei replies to Esoka. "I think that's part of being human? I don't think that, say, the Sentinel and Lagoma would always agree on the best course of action. Purity of judgment versus the ability to change. The gods can only be what they are, but humans -- we can be a lot of things. We can be contradictions. And our lives are messy, and complicated, and sometimes I do think we have to look as clearly as we can and make decisions that don't always have perfect answers." He reaches for his whiskey that he set aside on the edge of the fountain and takes a sip.
The Grotto attendants come and go from the gardens, returning every so often with a new circulation of nibbles -- little spiced fruit tarts with golden pastry and less than the size of one's palm are brought around next. Saedrus steps out along the pathways between blankets. "The nature of the person dictates it, very true." Saedrus idles with a smile to Fortunato on the blankets.
Arianna quietly slips from the Grotto, but not before passing a message to Saedrus and giving her thanks to Aleksei for such a wonderful Salon.
Arianna has left the a thick comfy ebony blanket with red and bronze cushions.
It seems that Dagon did question himself out early on, all impatient-like. So at some appropriate juncture he rises, perhaps intending to move on as well. "It's been most informative, brother. Not only the history, which, well, is fascinating enough, but the conceptual portion and the core beliefs. I'd have been quite drawn to Skald if we'd known him earlier, I think."
"Are there any other topics, or thoughts anyone wishes to speak on?" Saedrus asks softly with a smile to those still hanging and lounging about.
Leta grabs a little fruit tart, turns it over and considers its diminutive size on the palm of her hand. Then, daintily, she takes a bite, and goes back to frowning with interest at the questions and answers traded back and forth.
"I'm always particularly gratified to hear people from the Mourning Isles appreciate the tenets of Skald," Aleksei replies to Dagon with a bit of a wry smile.
Aureth checked composure at difficulty 15, rolling 3 lower.
Aureth chokes on his drink.
Saedrus blinks, looking back to Aureth with a pretty sort of frown.
"Archlector? I have a question," Rymarr finally speaks up while he continues to shove, or push, Samantha on the swing. He waits a beat before he speaks up and his chin lifts high while he speaks to the Archlector of Skald with an open stare, "What of choices that aren't really...", he pauses a beat before he continues, "...choices? Let's say that Frederick were to march Josiah out to Sovereign Bridge, inform him to jump from the bridge or be slain by Frederick for refusal. There is no, reasonably, free choice therein. Right? What would the outlook of Skald be in such a situation?"
"Thank you for coming, and participating, my Lord." Saedrus says with a gracious bow. The courtesan's attention lifts, regarding Rymarr with a curious expression which then tracks to Aleksei. Saedrus settles from his walking about with a graceful drop to his knees on the ebony blanket beside Fortunato. Finally, he takes a sip of his wine.
Aleksei considers Rymarr a moment, brows lifting, and then he says, "Sounds like Frederick is kind of an asshole. But, I mean -- are there /really/ no choices? Do you think that death by your own hand is the same thing as death by another? What if Josiah tried to run? Or kick Frederick in the balls?" He lifts a hand. "Maybe he could beg or try to to bargain for his life. A person being walked to their own execution still has the choice of how they face it. Stoic, courageous, laughing, crying. How we choose to face life -- that's still a choice."
Khanne has been quiet, as she often is. She spends her time observing and listening to the others closely, mulling over the questions and answers tossed about.
"Frederick has nothing to kick. If you attempt to reach out to Frederick, your hand passes through him. I'll not debate his nature - because you're not wrong. Frederick very much is. Let's go a step further in Frederick's being a..." it is then that Rymarr goes silent, his mouth left hanging open. Perhaps preventing himself from cursing, he clears his throat softly before he continues, "...disreputable sort. In fact, if Josiah doesn't leap from the bridge not only is his life forfeit, but also the entirety of his family. Let's go a step farther and say that Frederick isn't even Frederick. He can't be outran. Josiah can't hide from him. He is, in effect, an incarnation of Death." Rymarr's attention then drifts toward Aureth. He considers that particular Archlector for a moment before ultimately his attention drifts back to Aleksei before Rymarr concludes, "Ultimately, your choices by appearance are simple. Take your own life or everything gets wiped out. Or is this, metaphorical speaking, the danger of Writs? All possible avenues of choice being closed off until one is trapped within a very narrow, specific course?"
Dagon doesn't miss Aleksei's meaning, obviously. "Were it so that I wasn't such an abomination in that regard." A pause, as he seems to judge whether to say any more, and... his CHOICE comes up yes: "Well, I don't know. I suppose I know many of my kinsmen who are very fond of their personal freedom - certainly the call of the sea, to wander and adventure has some things in common with that impulse. Were it only that they recognized the danger in denying it others." A shrug. "I don't mean to start any overly political talk at your very peaceful and non-bloody salon, though. Be well, Brother."
Khanne tilts her head and asks quietly, "if Josiah has to decide between the two, isn't he still gifted with the choice of how to die, and how his family will be affected by that?"
Dagon has left the Tables and chairs before the fountain.
Again, Aleksei considers Rymarr. "Are you asking what to do in a situation where your choices seem so limited as to be nonexistent?" he asks. "Or are you asking how Skald would feel about this -- Frederick character?" His gaze flits to Aureth. "Let's not call him Death. This doesn't sound like something the Queen of Endings would do." He offers Dagon a wry, crooked sort of smile, and the tip of his head is quite respectful for the Duke's answer. "Thank you for coming, my lord," he says, all full of etiquette. Then he returns his attention to Rymarr. "Sometimes there isn't a good choice in any given situation. But as awful as it sounds? Letting yourself die rather than see your family harmed is still a choice. As for Writs--" He hesitates a moment. "They're complicated. They can be overwhelming and control a person's every action. Or they can be quite subtle and only work on a person's will in specific situations."
Saedrus has joined the a thick comfy ebony blanket with red and bronze cushions.
Rymarr considers the answers he's provided, though at the mention of Death he nods once, clearly conceding the point. "I'm curious of the outlook of Skald, largely. I understand that within the narrow, ultimately fatal scenario, that there *is* still a choice presented. Die by A or Die by B, choose wisely. So I am curious what Skald's outlook on Frederick and the situation in general would be." Rymarr continues to push Samantha along while he focuses his attention on Aleksei and the continuation of the discussion, "What if the entirety of that scenario is based on birth? It is not because you've wronged Frederick in some way, but because you were born into Frederick's ire. You didn't choose whatever it is that prompted Frederick to deliver this ultimatum. In fact it's not until your third decade in life that Frederick makes an appearance and informs you of your two choices, for some perceived slight or action from before you were pulled screaming into the world. Should Josiah then pray to Skald for deliverance from this apparent injustice and theft of choice from inception?"
Esoka sips on her drink, the scenario Rymarr describes drawing a frown to her red lips. "In that situation, I would die rather than see my kin and loved ones come to harm. The choice seems clear to me, but others may take another path. Which I suppose is the entire point." She picks another tart off a tray, making a low "Hrm" sound at the rest of Rymarr's question.
Ferrando has left the a thick comfy evergreen blanket with ivory and gold cushions.
"One would hope, a less divine but equally swift reckoning is bestowed upon Frederick in the form of law enforcers for being so utterly vulgar." Saedrus suggests quietly from his place on the ebony blanket scrounging up pillows to settle again.
Samantha seems to be regarding Rymarr from over her shoulder very carefully. It all feels very 'asking for a friend', but that's not a query to bring up here.
Leta's gaze drifts between Rymarr and Aleksei, and as she listens her brow furrows in thought and slight unease. But she's got a small fruit tart to finish up, so she does, biting into it with fierce focus.
"I think Josiah should start asking people how to rid himself of Frederick's attention," Aleksei says frankly. He shoots Saedrus a faint smile before continuing. "Listen: we all have choice, but we also all have /different/ choices. We're all still born into different circumstances. Skald doesn't guarantee us all a level playing field to start from, he just gives us the ability to react to our situation the way we choose to. I mean, I kind of have to think that his reaction would be something along the lines of, 'Figure out how to kick that guy's ass, he sounds like an asshole.'" He pauses a moment, considering, and then says, "It /is/ possible to bind someone unwillingly -- even without their knowledge. Those are bonds more easily broken than ones someone agrees to. If Frederick is /bound/ to Josiah in some way, that's one thing. If Frederick just hates Josiah because of something Josiah's dad did or something and wants to be an asshole to him forever -- I think Josiah's best-served by figuring out how to get rid of Frederick entirely."
Rymarr listens on as his questions and general discussion is both answered and replied to. He casts a nod toward both Saedrus and Esoka for a moment, clearly in agreement with their sentiments. He does however turn his attention back to Aleksei as he continues to listen and nods along. There's nearly a twitch of a smile at the mention of Skald's likely outlook of Frederick, though the expression never comes to full fruition. When Rymarr does finally reply one armored hand lifts from Samantha's back, where he gently pushes at the swing in order to keep her gentle momentum up. The palm of his gauntlet comes to rest atop his begemmed breastplate, somewhere likely atop his heart before he replies, "Of course I'm merely asking so that I better understand the full breadth of Skald's influence. I grew up in the Oathlands, much like yourself, and consider myself a devout son of the Pantheon. It is important to me that I understand the full scope of the newly rediscovered gods."
Aleksei considers Rymarr curiously for a moment, and then he just offers a quick smile. "Of course," he says, turning his gaze out to the others. "Thanks to all of you for coming! If anyone ever has any questions, I'm often at the Shrine of the First Choice, or you can feel free to send me a letter to meet. And thanks to Saedrus--" His smile quirks with particular warmth. "--for making everything ridiculously comfortable while I kept telling him not to make it /too/ fancy. I have the great honor to have him, Marquessa Samantha here, Dame Zhayla, and Prince Mason Grayson counted among Skald's discipleship already. I can't compete with all the Archlectors whose gods never got lost, but we're building something new, and that's pretty exciting."
Samantha beams up at Rymarr before restoring her attention to Aleksei. "I rather expect there will be more than one shrine to him established in Old Oak. Seliki will likely embrace him, and the county seat will need one as well."
Saedrus looks up from the quiet conversation on the blanket to Aleksei, gaze and smile all warmth and fondness even as he bows gracefully from his knelt place to the Archlector. "It was a delight," but a struggle not to make things 'fancy', "and thank you all for attending this evening. I hope it was an enjoyable evening and the Grotto has, as always, been charmed to host you all."
Khanne is overheard praising Aleksei for: Knowledgeable and very informative! Great Salon!
Khanne is overheard praising Saedrus for: Helped facilitate the salon so smoothly and gave it a beautiful venue!
Saedrus is overheard praising Aleksei for: A Salon held in his own style, not too fancy, but very well done.
Samantha is overheard praising Aleksei for: One small step for Skald, one giant leap for freedom!
Rymarr is overheard praising Aleksei for: The Archlector of First Choice has proven to be well-informed, humble, and enthusiastic about spreading the dogma of Skald. He's chosen to be a paragon of choice, he's chosen to smell nice no doubt, and he's chosen to look adorable in his little longcoat.
From her seat, Khanne smiles distractedly and when Aleksei thanks everyone for coming, she gives a soft applause, looking around to see if that is appropriate to do. "I am glad I could come, thank you for making me feel welcome. I know little of Skald, heard the stories growing up, but it is nice to learn more. Thank you."
Samantha is overheard praising Saedrus for: A well done co-hosting and display of skill in creating a wonderful event!
Olivia looks up as Aleksei seems to be concluding things, though not before turning a kind smile and dip of her head toward Saedrus. "I'm sure. Thank you so much, for your own help in putting this together!" And with that, she does rise herself, careful to smooth her skirts once standing, and traipses over to Aleksei. "This was wonderful. As ever, thank you, Archlector. Do not worry over competition, for I very much love your shrine and will no doubt be by to bother you more than you might wish." And oddly friendly with the priest, she tippy-toes to... kiss his cheek? Or whisper something. Maybe it's that. But it could look wrong. "Thank you again!" And then off she goes, la-dee-da.
Esoka is overheard praising Aleksei for: Much to think on, and a fine representative of the First Choice!
Aleksei's hand touches a bit automatically to Olivia's waist when she tippy-toes to whisper a quiet word. He laughs warmly at whatever she says, offering her a crooked grin. "Sure thing," he says in a tone of promise before she's off. Certainly there's food and drink left for those still lingering, but all in all, it is a salon successfully held -- and now wrapped.

I do hope that those attended found it enlightening, or at least left with some thought of the message therein. Aleksei spoke so well, in his own charming sort of manner, and I am glad it all came together. I am proud to be a Liberator of Skald and to be a Whisper. I did not expect that Aleksei asked the Whisper house to host the event, though when he told me it could not be 'fancy' or anything 'formal' I did struggle a little.
All in all, I was very happy with it, and too, that knowledge of the First Choice continues to grow in understanding within the city of Arx.
